It actually appears he rode in three meetings. Okay, no points from two rides isn't good, but not totally unexpected at a new track. Paid 7 from 3 is pretty good. He also rode in a BL match against Reading. He finished second first time out, but fell in his second and never reappeared; I assume he was injured. Overall, that is not bad from a new rider. He wasn't great at Halifax, but could certainly be classed as "useful". Averaging less than 4 for Eastbourne is poor... Then again, that was an era when Eastbourne had little difficulty in securing riders who could average less than four points a meeting!

Jan Puk and Jozef Kafel, Steve. Then there was Marek Kepa. Also Piotr Pyszny, who was at Arlington in 1983, but never showed the form he did at Poole and Halifax.

Not one I'd heard of; thanks! However, looking a little deeper, it seems that the Omaha Motordrome (actually in Council Bluffs) ran from September 1914 to July 1915. The track that opened in 1915 replaced the Motordrome, and was a much larger track.

Yes, I can confirm that. They appeared in the same team in 1956, and also in a couple of challenge matches in 1959.

That was the same Jack Scott, Bob. From Adelaide, he rode for Southampton before switching to Plymouth in 1961. He came back for a year with Cradley, the same year he was Australian Champion. As far as I know, he is still with us.

I wondered about him too. I just checked on the speedway museum website, and gustix made a post about him. He did stay in the west country until he died in the 1990's.

So Deon was still racing speedway at the time? I thought he was retired - which is why he is not listed.

Interesting you should mention Frank Charles. On another thread recently, you were talking about riders we lost between 1935 and 1957, and norbold mentioned those who died off-track. Frank Charles was another great who could be added to the list, losing his life in a gliding accident in 1939.

Okay, I received an email about Hans-Peter Finn (from someone who has sent me several names). I looked a little deeper, and there are several references in New Zealand Newspapers. Seems he was actually killed on March 30, 1920, at the "jockey's club racecourse", Devonport-Takapuna. I know nothing about the venue, but it was listed as a grass-track, and was home to horse, dog, and motorcycle racing. He is also listed on the grasstrackgb website remembrance page. Finn was apparently hit by another rider, and suffered various injuries. He was 37, and is buried in the Waikumete Cemetery.

Not sure where I got his name from, but I will check and see what information I can find.

Vic Allan was another, I believe... Really was great stuff!
