  1. Oh dear, Robbie... Iris123 is not a "her" but a "him"...
  2. As did Stefan Salomonsson, Jim Dormer, Brad Oxley, and Leif Soderberg. I think we need to look at an absolute minimum of two teams for this thread...
  3. Trying to be a smartarse, eh? I can beat Steve Bast with Timmy Joe Sheppard at Hackney!
  4. While "a few", may not have been interested, I certainly don't feel it was as big an issue as some may claim. Plus, in the late 60's and early 70's, it wasn't unusual to have a "star guest" make an appearance in the second half; often a match race (or series) against the top local(s), and contesting the usual second half event. At Plough Lane, it was usually a London-based rider, or someone like Terry Betts. It must have been worth their while to turn up for a couple of races...
  5. His career came to an abrupt halt in 2007 for being a naughty boy. There is more information available online...
  6. Ah, okay... You know, I originally put, "where Pete Murray took Sverre off", then changed it - just to appear nice, and non-accusatory.
  7. I was next to my dad! You must have seen him! Right where Sverre came off! Unless your memory is going... Next thing, you'll say you don't remember seeing me at the Lokeren Trophy either!
  8. I was there for his British debut at Custom House in 1970. He looked good then!
  9. Two more Welshmen to appear for Newport were Graig Gough (handful of meetings in 1999 and 2001), and Pete Rodger, who had a sole outing in 1975. Both were Newport-born.
  10. Remember, Reg didn't ride in 72, but his form had been on the slide since his last year at Plough Lane in 69. Throw in the fact that Ronnie had gone, and Trevor had been really been struggling for a couple of years, I really didn't think it was that solid a team. It was really asking a lot of Bertola, Clarke, and Stape to really emerge as true heat-leaders, and of course, that never looked like happening.
  11. No, that was 74, and of course, that was when we got Briggo back.
  12. Well, we lost John Dews halfway through 1972, and then Mirac and Jim. Those three were replaced by Luckhurst, Clarke, and Harkins. So, you would probably figure that Reg was the closest to Jim as far as ability...
  13. While that may be true, Bob was probably the most under-rated of the three. Swindon's Number one for four years, he led the Robins to the National League title in 1957 with an average of around 10.5, and the only riders to score more points during the season were Briggs, Craven, and Peter Moore. Also, we can't forget him winning the Christmas Vase at Wimbledon on Boxing Day 1956, ahead of such riders as Nigel Boocock, Peter Moore, Ron How, and his brother Cyril.
  14. I noticed that also... It wasn't so much that Maido didn't want him that upset Jim, but the way he did it (including the late notice).
  15. One of the very few Scots not to ride for a Scottish team...
  16. I vaguely remember that night (I was only 5)... Another local who never rode for the Dons was Gordon Humphreys. He was born in Croydon.
  17. Why stop there? His bruvver didn't either...
  18. Staying with our locals, Ray Wilson was born in Merton Park...
  19. Plus, John states that he didn't score a point at Plough Lane, yet records indicate that he scored 2 and a bonus.
  20. He actually made 18 appearances for the Bees, including 10 NL matches. He was also runner-up in the 1959 World Longtrack Championship (behind Josef Hofmeister). Longtrack is why he only spent the one year in Britain, which as Sidney said, was worth a lot more than the CO would offer him at Coventry. My dad got to see him ride.
  21. Okay, which Mitcham Don are you?
