t’s second leg time to decide the destiny of the Pioneer Cup on Saturday (15th) - with the Fen Tigers looking to overcome a 14 points deficit from the first leg, held at Iwade all the way back in May. The Eagles come with a strong heat leader line up headed by a rider who, remarkably, hasn’t ridden at West Row for just a few days short of 20 years: one time SGP rider and many times GB international, Edward Kennett. He’s backed up by ‘Mr Kent Speedway’ himself, twice National League Riders’ Champion, Ben Morley and former Fen Tigers’ rider, Jack Kingston. Morley and Kingston won the Pairs event at Mildenhall in the last meeting of course. Top individual scorer in that event was Simon Lambert - and the multi-British Finalist lines up on Saturday for the Fen Tigers - along with twice NZ national champion Ben Whalley and there’s a return to Mildenhall colours of the ever popular Arran Butcher. Making a Fen Tigers’ debut will be Championship rider, Vinnie Foord. Mildenhall Fen Tigers are on the road (and indeed boat!) next week with an away trip to the Isle of Wight on Tuesday 11th. August. Supporters Trust Club Chairperson, Kieran Phillips is looking forward to more success at Smallbrook after the Fen Tigers had a successful sortie over the Solent in their comeback year of 2025. “We’ve got James Shanes back in our colours after missing the last two Fen Tigers’ matches due to his Long Track commitments on the Continent. We know how well James goes at the Isle of Wight which is in many ways a track like those large circuits he excels in racing on mainland Europe. "Then there’s our Aussie & NZ pairing of Harry Sadler and Ben Whalley who having been brought up on the larger circuits down under should also do well at the IOW, the largest track operating in the UK. Boston-based Mickie Simpson makes his Fen Tigers' debut - Mickie has been in excellent form this season included joining Shanes in the European Grasstrack Championship Final later this month. "Completing our line up will be Harrison Rogers and, making a track comeback, Fen Tiger of old Scott Campos. I’m confident as I take Team Manager duties again on the night, that we can repeat our win there of last season” The Isle of Wight are one of the other stand alone tracks competing under NORA regulations - indeed they are the club who pioneered the move to NORA and Phillips speaks of the fantastic support given by the Ryde-based club, "We are really grateful to Martin Widman. promoter at the IOW for the fantastic backing that he's given us at Mildenhall in every way. Meeting report: 'Racing in the East' NORA British Pairs Championship - Mildenhall 25/7/26 The tightest of finishes (not without a dose of controversy) on Saturday 25th. July at Mildenhall Stadium saw the inaugural 'Racing in the East' NORA British Speedway Championship Pairs title go the way of the Kent Eagles, edging out Cradley in the Grand Final after a heavy crash involving Man of the Meeting, Seth Norman. The 15-year-old Norman had a sensational run of victories beating the hugely-experienced Ben Morley, Alfie Bowtell and Simon Lambert in successive races to ensure the Heathens pairing finished level on points after the qualifying heats with the Eagles, setting up an exciting dénouement. Sadly the Final was to end in painful disappointment for Norman though – crashing out on the third bend of the first lap, with the trailing Jack Kingston then running into the fallen teenager. The initial decision was to exclude Kingston much to the confusion of all watching on and a Speedway version of VAR (using footage recorded of the incident) was applied by the referee to correct his earlier mistaken interpretation of the crash. That effectively ended the Black Country side’s chances of a surprise victory and Norman himself ended the night in hospital with a nasty abrasion and back injury. Third place went the way of the Wisbech Cross Keys duo of Mickie Simpson and Sam Woods – the European Grasstrack Finalist Simpson delivering a hat trick of race wins himself, including one terrific scrap with the home pairing’s number one, Bowtell. Young Aussie World Women’s Championship number four, Tayla Street showed well from the gate in a number of her rides but was caught out by a track she’d never seen before and so was unable to contribute points to add to her partner Lambert’s individual haul of 13. The crowd were also entertained (and responded very enthusiastically to) the awesome sight of the two 1000cc Right Hand Sidecar Speedway bikes piloted by the country’s two leading exponents of this comeback formula, Paul Whitelam and Will Penfold. Next up for the Mildenhall Fen Tigers is on Saturday August 15th. with Kent Eagles visiting West Row, this time as a full team in the second leg of the major NORA League competition of 2026, the Pioneer Cup. Meeting preview: NORA British Pairs Championship - Mildenhall Stadium, Saturday 25th.July 2026 It’s a case of Two’s Company at Mildenhall Stadium on Saturday 25th. July with the NORA British Pairs Championship coupled with demonstration races from the leading riders from British Championship Sidecars providing a full programme of events for what promises to be an exciting evening of top-quality Speedway racing – gates at 6pm for a 7.30pm start time. The NORA Pairs event sponsored by ‘The Racing In The East’ project sees the welcome return to Fen Tigers’ colours of West Row favourite son, Alfie Bowtell; partnered by Aussie Harry Sadler – who scored a hugely impressive paid 12 on his Mildenhall debut last month. The home duo face stiff opposition from five visiting pairs. Fellow NORA League side Kent Eagles come with predictable strength, captained by a former National League Pairs Champion in the vastly experienced Ben Morley and a former Fen Tiger, returning after a mid-season break from action, one time British U19 rostrum man, Jack Kingston. Another former third tier Pairs Champion in the form of Simon Lambert fronts up the first of two Pairs brought to the meeting by the HG Aerospace Speedway Academy – the Anglian Angels. The Angels were the joint-side put together back in the late 1990s by East Anglian giants King’s Lynn & Ipswich and the Foxhall-based Academy has resurrected the team name for this meeting and future use. Partnering multi-British Finalist Lambert and making a West Row debut on her racing tour of Europe is World Women’s Championship number 4, Tayla Street. Team Managing the Angels is former Ipswich Witches rider and long-time Team boss at Foxhall, Ritchie Hawkins. The other HG Aerospace-backed team are Ipswich themselves – with two leading members of their Academy in Ashton Vale and Harrison Rogers looking to upset the odds. As will the remaining two pairs: Cradley A.R.H. Heathens’ Seth Norman and former GB Youth Champion, Luke Harris; and the Boston-based duo of Mickie Simpson and Sam Woods, wearing on the evening the colours of a team name from the Cambs & Lincs border of old, Wisbech. Making the meeting a double attraction will be the mighty 1000cc Sidecars featuring two legends of the discipline: former British Sidecar Speedway Champion, Paul Whitelam and multi-GB Champion in Grasstrack Sidecars, Will Penfold. Both crews have multi-appearances in the Sidecar Speedway World Championships and there couldn’t be more impressive ambassadors re-introducing this discipline to British Speedway tracks. The meeting is sponsored by the ‘The Racing In The East’ project. Details of this University of East Anglia ground-breaking project will be in the special souvenir meeting programme along with an exclusive article highlighting the very little-documented post-war Wisbech Speedway written by Speedway historian Derek Barclay. Chairperson of the Mildenhall Supporters Trust who run Speedway at West Row; Kieran Phillips states, “This is such a big meeting for the club – our biggest since we formed the Community Interest Company and reopened the sport at West Row. The field is of great quality and we’ve had tremendous sponsorship and support from fellow clubs which is so heartening to see.
