Sheffield & Scunthorpe Nl Team
Parsloes 1928 nearly replied to gypilgrim's topic in National League Speedway
Hmm, okay - though still a distinct absense of understanding by posters on here of the point about the selective use of the joint-name when riding as an away team. I bet you a lot of money that come the official BSPA and Star published fixtures, it shall ALWAYS be listed as Scunthorpe/Sheffield (or hopefully an agreed joint alternative name) and NEVER alternating on some complicated matrix between the two when riding as the away team... To do anything other would simply be far too confusing.. -

Hmm, I suspect only you understand what you mean by this... I certainly don't... The overwhelmingly anti-London bias by so many on this Forum has been there for all to see from the Wimbledon relaunch time to now and doubtless beyond.. Funny enuff it has only ever worked one way, though that won't stop people saying it's Londoners who have a bad attitude to everything happening outside of the capital when it's patently evidenced on here that the opposite's the case!! As for Malc's comments, well as you say the Western Warriors branded themselves (very slightly...) differently as home teams; but away from home they were called by just the one name... If you honestly think prog writers and more to the point home fans are gonna to be bothered to differentiate between what semantic version of the combined Scunny-Sheff team are in town you're living in fantasy land!! -

I think you've misunderstood... This kind of daftness is EXACTLY what's being 'proposed'. All the sensible voice is saying is simply call the joint team , 'Scunthorpe/Sheffield' OR an alternative neutral single name... Swapping names is simply NOT remotely sensible... -

You're over-reacting my friend - all I'm saying as someone who writes the 'visitors page' in a number of NL progs, is that I'd rather the home punters understood the visiting team was Sheffield/Scunthorpe than try and create some sort of a pretence that one week (in the League) the side the home team was facing was 'Sheffield' and then a fortnight later (in the Cup) the same team was 'Scunthorpe'...! Not to mention the confusion caused should a rain off 'transfer' the home side across this semantic divide... I'm pefectly at ease with the concept of a side called Sheffield/Scunthorpe so surely that's fine generally isn't it...?! One team equals one name, surely.. And your words about Hackney are very misplaced; as trust me, there's a strong and well-backed campaign to restore a Speedway track to this part of East London.. -

The merged team idea is fine and as you say, a fine tradition of such arrangents in this division. I think the point Ken was picking up on was the utterly impracticable idea that when visiting opponents, the merged team shall either be called Sheffield or Scunny based entirely on which of the two tracks are going to or have already staged the corresponding fixture... That's a semantic nonsense!!! -

More to the point, who's the tasty bit of frippet presenting the very expensive trophy to the Racers' captain..? Bit of a Marilyn Monroe lookalike...!! -

Oh okay - just a thought... Strangely the name of my good friend who I thought it MIGHT be isn't allowed in the weird world of the BSF.. Here; I'll try again: # Name Removed #... -
That is indeed an excellent looking side. A dazzling combination of experience (indeed in Barrie & 'Magic' really THE two most top-class experienced riders in this tier, both former Riders Champs)and top quality youth: Marc surely every chance of being THE top rider in the 2011 NL.. I too though, am sad to see no place for Lee Strudwick - but am sure he'll get a team spot elsewhere.. Maybe at the Iow along with Mark & Aaron..? Or perhaps Mildenhall..?

That little lad in the Southampton pic..? It's not a certain one-time promoter at Wimbledon Speedway circa 2002 is it..?! -

Nope I am STILL confused... When pressed on this before Mr. Chaplin came back as follows (as you retold..): So I repeat if the Daily Mail is under lock and key, what's this other one being hawked around as the British (indiv.) Championship trophy..?! -
Many thanks. So as they rode League matches, Rochesrter DO deserve a mention in the history of Kentish Speedway clubs Let's hope before the year is up another club can enter that history....

World Individual Championship Trophy

When John talks about the 'British Championship', he means what used to be called the 'British Final' yes..? Surely whatever anyone feels, this IS the major indiv. title contended for yearly here in the UK so I can't see why he (John) is so anti this famous old trophy being the one given out each year to the winner..? And I'm still confused, what's the (very expensive) trophy sitting in the vault at the Daily Mail HQ then..?! -
Not sure about that... There have been a number of high-profile youngsters in the past frew years giving up MotoX for Speedway; and one name I apologise for missing before when listing GB internationals who began in the CL, was a junior champion at Road Racing and at MotoX but gave both of those disciplines up for Speedway. Lewis Bridger of course.

Hmm, I think I'm right in saying that Tai had not raced competitively at 500cc before jetting into Scunthorpe (there's not an expression much used!) - so I think that our third division here can indeed claim a huge role in his development.. And, er, no-one would claim that Bomber was made into "a world class rider" by the CL but it was his - and all of his Team GB's contemporaries' - route into the sport: which is surely what we're talking about in terms of what we require from this tier of British Speedway..
-
I agree... An absolute great at this level. And NOTHING wrong with that IMHO...
-
I understand - contrary to what I posted before - that it seems highly likely that Barrie Evans shall be riding for Hackney this year. Handy for Barrie: as both Rye and Arena Essex are, of course, previous home tracks of his... And as a former Wimbledon Don, Barrie becomes the first rider for some considerable time to have turned out for both of the captal's longest serving clubs!!
-
Er, sorry my fellow north-west Kentish Man but you have absolutely NO idea what you're talking about!!!! How does Harris, Woffinden, Kennett, Stead, Wright, Howe, Barker grab ya for starters... One GP winner in there and at least one other certain to become one... EVERY single talented British youngster on the scene now, started out in the CL..: where have you been looking..?!

Bloody hell, that seems a very high valuation..! And didn't a previous poster suggest THIS was the original 1930s World Championship trophy... Mr. Chaplin is saying differently... -
Sheffield & Scunthorpe Nl Team
Parsloes 1928 nearly replied to gypilgrim's topic in National League Speedway
Rob Godfrey quoted, ".. the team will appear as Scunthorpe/Sheffield in the league table, but will race as Scunthorpe Saints at Scunthorpe and as Sheffield at Sheffield, probably resurrecting the Prowlers nickname. If, for argument's sake, the Isle of Wight come to Scunthorpe, it will be Scunthorpe who will go to the Isle of Wight for the return fixture but if Buxton go to Sheffield, then it will be Sheffield who go to Buxton” Gosh, that away match 'protocol' seems remarkably confusing...?! Surely in reality as an away team, it'll have to be the combined Scunthorpe/Sheffield name won't it..?! -
No mention of who the Hawks' opponents are going to be on Good Friday..?! Looks like a very exciting Hackney side - well done to those assembling this outfit. Though I kinda suspect that Barrie will back with the Fen Tigers won't he..?!
-
I 100% agree - there is NO-ONE on the BSF who posts better and more sensible but still thought-provoking stuff that Mr. Mc...

Yes, so 'Tigers' from '73 to '88....

Oh dear, Jules...: Buzz was born on exactly the same day (10/6/64) as my wife so I'm going have to say, that this is NOWHERE near 50!!!! Best wishes to the 'old fella' anyhow!!

Name Of Famous Rider Who Committed Suicide?
Parsloes 1928 nearly replied to chris67bug's topic in Years Gone By
You are right. In the whole history of the BSF there has never been a more ill-judged and yes, "so wrong" posting than the one by shazzybird you've picked up on. She reduces the murder of a young woman, mother of two to what she calls "a personal matter which REALLY is none of anyones business". I do hope even this long after posting this simply outrageous comment, shazzy will reconsider and retract such an awful and indefensible sentiment... Go down this road and you're saying that all domestic violence is acceptable, as it's a personal issue and not the business of anyone outside the home... Outrageous... I personally would be happier if the name of Kenny Carter who committed such an awful crime was not mentioned again.. -
Blimey FOUR matches... I didn't realise they actually rode that many (sadly all, of course, away from the 'home' they never actually got... ). Who were the 4 matches against?
