  1. Yes I've done the tour with Charlie (my all time hero!) and it's fantastic!!
  2. Which is a rubbish claim.. '71 was certainly the WORST year in that decade for music!!
  3. Not a chance would Olsen have won in '77 - a GP Series then would've been won easily by PC who was streets ahead the best rider in the world in '77. I'd also say PC would've had a very chance in '74 (Mich's year) and certainly '75 & '78 - so I'd say Ole would've won LESS World titles... PC World Champ '74 to '78 inclusive would have had a nice ring about it!!
  4. Gordon Kennett appeared the weekend before last at Lydd in the Vets Championship! Another to add to the list!!
  5. Sorry no offence intended. My posting was about what a plain and simple name 'Mickie Simpson' is compared to modern names. Nothing other than that...
  6. It was none the less as I said, a dramatic dip in form which was both massively disappointing and very surprising...
  7. You're right - the pitch at Highbury was the SMALLEST in the whole football league! Mind you this apparent extract is from 1929 and I don't think either the West or East Stands (in their Art Deco glory) were built by this point - so the situation at the ground (a ground I knew and loved so well later..) wasn't as any of us (except perhaps for John!!) would be able to remember...
  8. Yes that's true... Great name too... In these days of Jacobs, Corbins, Baileys, Masons and Nathans with double-barrelled surnames, how refreshing to have a 'Mickie Simpson'!!! Oh and another rider who needs a mention is Leon Flint who was outstanding in the 250cc class which had by far the least riders but produced the best races..
  9. I remember my Dad telling me that the stands at Mitcham Stadium were moved to Herne Hill Cycle track in 1948 for the Olympics...
  10. Ha, and interestingly when they did open at Brooklands in '69 they actually did so WITHOUT Planning Permission! Happy days!! Is this a genuine extract from the Daily Mirror? In what context was this written? A letter to the Sports pages or in another article?
  11. No! Greenwood lowered the track record (held since 2013 as you know by Boxall) twice - in two different meetings; so NOT to do with track conditions. In one of those same meetings but NOT in the race he set the T/R obviously, he caught Ayres off 15 metres. He WAS awesome for the Storm both times he visited CP this season but after his performances on Sunday and then on Monday one can only assume his machinery is spent and/or he's now in shocking form... Very surprising and in equal measure disappointing...
  12. The riders who stood out for me were Gilkes (who I'd not seen before - like Mike says I do hope he's okay coz that was some prang at the end..!), Brennan (who am looking forward to seeing riding NL from, er, next week as he turns 15 on Saturday..) and Jenkins - who was outstanding I thought. Sooo unlucky not to reach the final and his pass of Bickley was the racing move of the day.
  13. Cheers Arnie - wouldn't be the same if I didn't make one error!! The most controversial moment was surely in the 500cc Final. I've NEVER seen a rider line up like Bickley did - with his bike literally at 45 degress to the tapes (as opposed to the required head on..). The reason? So he could (from the inside gate) immediately cut right across Tom Brennan's path. I'm at a total loss to understand how neither the Start Marshal nor the Ref saw this and/or why they took no action... It was the literal definition of an 'unsatisfactory start'!! We certainly all saw it did where I was standing and we were all astonished it was allowed to go..! Talking of where we were standing , where were you Arnie... Never saw ya!!!
  14. The way I had it scored after 46 heats of action (!) was as follows: British Youth Championships Round Four 500cc 1st. Kyle Bickley (8); 2nd. Tom Brennan (12[M]); 3rd. Luke Woodhull (10); 4th. Daniel Gilkes (9); 5th. Jordan Jenkins 7; 6th.= Anders Rowe 6; 6th. = Kean Dicken 6; 8th. James Hitchen 6; 9th. Sam Woolley 5; 10th. = Carl Basford 4; 10th = Alex Spooner; 12th. = Sheldon Davies 2; 12th. = Sam Bebee. 2 250cc 1st. Leon Flint (12[M]); 2nd. Jason Edwards (8); 3rd. Drew Kemp (5); 4th. Aaran Butcher 0 150cc 1st. Nathan Ablitt (12[M]); 2nd. Sam Hagon (8); 3rd. Kieron McCoy (8); 4th.Josh Parnell (7); 5th.Mason O’Rourke 3; 6th. Jamie Bursill 3; 7th. James Laker 0 125cc 1st. Joe Thompson (12[M]); 2nd.Dan Thompson (12[M]); 3rd. Harry McGurk (11); 4th. Corbin Pavitt (9); 5th Sam McGurk 8; 6th. Mikey Robbins 8; 7th. Mickie Simpson 6; 8th. Jordan Palin 6; 9th. Freddie Fox-Baron 5; 10th. Danny Curl 5; 11th. Jacob Clayton 4; 12th. = Bailey Fellows 4; 12th. = Alex Goldsborough 4; 14th. Elliott Kelly 2; 15th. Taya Thirtle 2; 16th. Jacob Fellows 1; 17th. Max Perry 0
  15. Did BWD have a GB Passport..? I doubt it...
  16. Hmm, I might well have agreed with you at the time of the abortive Opening Meeting but is the fact that every single meeting since has been called off and they are still unable to sort out the track not slightly changed your view on this? There's clearly a major problem with the track..
  17. No need for special dispensation... Jason's father (Phil) rode and so did his grandfather (Street) - that's three generations from Jason's perspective! Certainly is FOUR generations. Martin's son Kelsey was runner up a couple of years ago in the GB Youth Champs and rides in the NL for the Isle of Wight. In this case, seconds is Allott...!!
  18. How about father and son pairs who actually rode together!? I can offer up George & Terry Barclay and Les & Aidan Collins Plus I think Mark Courtney rode with one of his sons..?
  19. Speedway Updates gave incorrect details for the away leg at Arlington btw. Well wrong as declared anyhow! In heat 6 when the unfortunate Kyle Hughes looped and crashed (get well and back on a bike soon, Kyle..), though it is true that at the time of the stoppage Jack Thomas was clear in third place (having passed Andrews earlier in the race) - for reasons best (indeed only) known to the ref it wasn't awarded as a 1-5 to the Kings but as a 2-4: Andrews being awarded second... We did al expect the error to be corrected but it wasn't!! So Andrews (hope Richard also recovers ASAP from his nasty fall in the second leg) scored 6 and Jack Thomas (robbed of a point and a further bonus - scored 7 +1. Final score in the first leg was 34-56 NOT 33-57 as the Updates page has it..
  20. Yes my late brother in law had this album and I always loved it and especially the cover! But surely that's Arlington rather than a pre-league Rye House?
  21. It's a unique 'double header' at Kent Speedway on Good Friday (March 25th.)! The Kent SLYDE Kings' match vs. Eastbourne Eagles (start time 6.30pm) in the Good Friday Chase (itself a part of a 'double' of matches that day, the first leg being at Arlington at mid-day..) is followed by, not one but TWO live rock bands in the main Grandstand large bar after the action. The bands are Mean 'n My Lady and The Grimms. It's free for the bands for those who've been at the Speedway! Full details on the Kent Speedway website.

  23. Yes sadly I went to the original rained off date (well set off but turned back when heard it was off..) but didn't make the restaging... :-( Now on this topic (which cunningly could be why I raised it in the first place!!!), gig-going fans can combine Speedway with rock music in a unique 'double header' at Central Park in Sittingbourne on Good Friday (March 25th.).. 24. So has the idea to give divisions 'A' & 'B' (as described above) different standalone names (heard 'Provincial' & 'Conference' being mentioned...) been abandoned now?
