  1. I would respectfully suggest that the whole concept of this book is insensitive to the Carter family.... IMO, Kenny Carter's life, bearing in mind the shocking way it ended and the terrible harm done to so many by him was NOT in anyway a suitable subject for a book.
  2. Yes that's right. And Barry Sheene (Like Hunt sadly no longer with us...) was World Champ that year too..!! Just wanted to make another comment connected to PC. Someone posted on a related thread about Chris' victory that "it doesn't get better than this". That's nonsense though, isn't it..! It does get better and that's by becoming World Champ. I sincerely believe Chris can do this. No fault of Chris who can only win what's before him - but let's be brutally honest, a GP (even the prestigious GB one..) is but a solitary round in a world championship series and next step up has to be to go for that World title. Is Nicki Pedersen that much better than Chris? I don't think so, so let's get behind what we really need to see: a Chris Harris World title win.. Then it won't be able to get any better...!!!
  3. Much as I have little time for F1 and, as you say, the privileged position they occupy in the national media, on this occasion I think the fact that there was a clash this weekend has helped us. Certainly, I believe that the Mirror has put the sizeable piece about Chris Harris' victory where they have (inside back cover..) because it fits in nicely with the rest of that two page spread about Lewis Hamilton. And because Hamilton is doing so well, there's a kind of symmetry in pointing out that in another traditionally British motor sport discipline, we have another young competitor starting to achieve notable results and victories: i.e. Chris Harris. And, of course, the Mail's piece did draw a parallel between the hugely exciting nature of Chris's Cardiff exploits with the often dull, predictability and thrill-free output of F1..: so we can actually gain much from the comparison too.. Interesting that you mention the '70s. This is because, IMHO, Chris Harris has a style which is very reminiscent of the great Peter Collins. I honestly think that when it comes to interest within the British media in Speedway, we actually need not just a champion, but one with a swash-buckling style. This is what Chris can give us and wins like Saturday's will, I believe, capture the public's imagination. A plea..: after this, can Sky PLEASE stop peppering their EL coverage with constant references to who gets out the gates wins etc. This has been proven at the highest level to be untrue and we don't need it said!!
  4. Absolutely. Fair play to the Mail (not always or indeed EVER before my cup of tea!!) this is an excellent piece. Let's hope it appears as fully in print as it has on their web-site...
  5. What about that fella called, I think, Marshall Pugh who came from Majorca. There was a burdgeoning scene on the sunshine holiday isle in the early '70s (whatever came of the track(s)!!??) and Johnnie Hoskins had Pugh over riding a few times at Kingsmead.. I suppose he was Spanish, was he..?
  6. Roy Barwick who appeared for Crayford in 1975/6 (and had started as a Wimbledon second-halfer) was pretty tall as I recall...
  7. I understand the 80th. birthday of one-time Wimbledon rider Jim Gregory (who was riding splendidly for the Men in Black recently at Peterboro') is imminent (or may have happened now..?). Does anyone know the date of his birthday..??
  8. Massive well done to Eddie and to Lewis. Two products of the Sittingbourne & Eastbourne training tracks...!!!!
  9. Will you need a lift to the studio..?? I could ask you some questions on the way..: like, why are there sometimes red lights strategically positioned along major London streets..??!!
  10. Couldn't swear on it, but I don't think so. Rhys comes from Essex and has a background in junior Cycle Speedway.
  11. Of God's own Speedway track in general: Highwaymen era and the mighty Kestrels. Go out and buy your copy now!!!!
  12. Well, he wasn't born in Kent, KB..: but as you can see in this month's series of articles on DJ he moved to the county when he was just three years of age and so spent all the rest of his childhood, youth and school-days in Kent; and learnt the sport in the county and at Eastbourne. This more than qualifies him for being one of Kent's greatest ever motorcycling products. BTW, what did you make of the Crayford article in the same issue..??!!
  13. He has a great memory..: he's certainly not forgotten that time I gave him a lift..!!!
  14. Hey - a rather surprising reference to the old club in of all things the 'Barking & Dagenham Post' this week!!! There's a bit of a debate locally about the (admittedly rather daft) appendage of 'and Redbridge' to the name of our local new Football League club. Some are campaigning for a name change to Dagenham Dragons! In support of this, someone in the 'Post' writes that there is a great tradition of alliterative names in sport, mentioning: "Wycombe Wanderers, Bradford Bulls, Philadelphia Phillies, and Canterbury Crusaders"..!!!
  15. It's not Under 15 racing of course (well, not all of it..!) but wasn't sure where else to post about last night's Academy racing at Lakeside/Arena. If you want to see the results please go to: http://sittingbourne.proboards17.com/index...read=1181211740
  16. Ah, that's why I didn't see you in the bar, Phil..!! Seriously, though, sadly I reasoned that the weather was just that little bit too dodgy to go that many miles to see Sittingbourne score a handful of points; and misplaced discretion proved the better part of valor..!!! As it happened, the forecast was wrong really and the weather okay but it IS a long way to go when doubts hover like rain clouds; and so am grateful that the Crusaders' league visit is in late August..!! One thing puzzles me from the reports.. : whose Testimonial meeting was this..??!!!!
  17. And with all due respect, just imagine what everyone would be saying if we were all talking about going to Stoke this weekend for the CL Fours. In case anyone hasn't noticed, the Spitfires have called off their last, what is it four or five now, home meetings..??!!
  18. Well, I've NOT been so can't comment...: but Scunthorpe's big wins there in the end of season cup finals last year does suggest that this theory's a bit flawed...?? Hope Grant is okay...
  19. Well, okay, but surely it would have been more sensible to have events like Four Team Tournaments discussed under the Conference League section; and leave the "individual" meetings bit for,er, individual meetings..?! After all, the next logical step for this new direction of the Mods is to remove challenge matches (like the ill-fated one due to be at Scunny yesterday) away from the CL section too: coz let's face it, they're NOT actually League matches either are they.. This was a case of a mistake being made in putting this fixture in this section, but instead of holding one's hands up, great effort was expended in saying, "no it's not us that's wrong..: it's everyone else!". As you've noted before, Rob, when the CL4TT was 'allowed' to be discussed in the CL section, it attracted loads more genuine interest in it as a discussion thread. Oh well, it's not, I guess, for me to wonder why..??!! On topic, Crusaders line-up for Frday is: Dean Felton Joe Reynolds Gordon Meakins Luke Goody
  20. I would suggest we give up, Darren, as neither me, you or Rob have had any luck with this.. At least the two of you didn't get a load of abuse for raising the issue..!!!
  21. Or: why not have the Pairs & 4TT events where people would EXPECT to find them (as they did trouble-free in previous years!!) in the respective Premier/Conference/Elite sections..??!!
  22. Well done, Rob. Let's hope that sense will prevail this time!!?? You are, of course, right that virtually no-one was contributing to the other thread coz no-one knew it was there!!
  23. mick cast: Welcome to the best thread on the whole BSF!!! Above is a section of a posting I made before about that travesty of a dog track in the old car park..! As you can see there's, sadly, no question of a Speedway track being viable..
