If my memory isn't playing tricks on me that's not quite right. Originally it was a competition called the Silver Sash. The holder of the Sash would ride against the highest scoring rider from the opposing team (league matches only). Whoever won the single race would be the holder of the Sash. For a fan the fun was trying to work out the fixtures to see if it could end up at your track. I remember one occasion at Monmore where John Louis riding for Newport scored a 15 point max but was not able to challenge because the scores were from programmed rides only and as a reserve Louis had 3 programmed. At some point this morphed into the Golden Helmet which was a monthly competition. The BSPA would choose the challenger and there would a leg (3 races) at the holders track and a leg (3 races) at the home track of the challenger. If it was level after 2 legs there would a be a deciding leg at a neutral track decided by the BSPA.

Exactly How Much Weaker Is This Years League?
Beowulf replied to Shale Searcher's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
For Wolves it's a simple equation: 2017 = 2016-Woffinden-Karlsson+Skornicki+Greaves. Yup, weaker. -
I think something stronger, like a bottle of whisky, is required to cope with those posts. 😂
-
Rye have a good team and should do well. Your strongest opposition at home, in theory, should be Wolves. Similarly I expect our 2 toughest matches at Monmore to be against the Rockets. Harris and Nicholls are track specialists.
-
He doesn't do that well at Monmore
-
Kasprzak at Rye House ? Really ?
-
Yes, but you say that every year.

I rather like the idea of being under-rated, making changes and then doing the business in the play-offs. Don't know where I got the idea from. 👍 In other shock news Shovlar predicts Poole to win title. Who would have thought it ?
-
At Monmore Wolves rode on Mondays and Spoons (Cradley) on Tuesday. The riders and fans preferred the track to have plenty of shale on it to help passing. However, when the spoons were riding on Tuesday the track was always prepared slick. So for Lions riding on Saturday it might not make any difference,

Depends what you are referring to. Tax avoidance is minimising your tax bill by using all the allowances that are legally available to you. Tax evasion is not paying your calculated tax bill i.e. you know what your bill is but you just don't pay it. Anyway it's an odd argument to say that 'rich' people do wrong things so less well off people should also do wrong things. Your own moral compass should tell you what to do.

Well I work in finance, but that page tells you nothing. You need to know the Directors of the company which might give further clues.

That fine,as long as you know you are breaking the law,

Just 1 question, where does he keep the Stars ?
-
Penny Farthing ? He probably arrives there on the back of a Woolly Mammoth !
-
Whilst I respect your opinion, you must be in the very small minority that wish to defend Starman................................................................
-
If your understanding of English is low, I can't be blamed for that. Maybe you should blame your teachers................................................................ As someone who was not born in the country, I can confirm that it is possible to learn you know.
-
I am afraid I cannot agree with your use of the of the word 'mate'. Hope you understand.
-
In time honoured fashion.....................................................................................................get off the Wolves thread. Now I wonder where I've heard that general comment ?

It's a lost cause. Pointless having a battle of wits when one of the combatants is unarmed.

Wolves last top league season was 1980, when the previous promotion left. Dan McCormick then at Cradley, I think as stadium manager (stand to be corrected) took over the promotional reigns at Monmore. He moved Wolves into the lower league (National League) and changed their race night to Sunday afternoon (!) with some Thursday nights. The combination of a lower league, all different riders (no continuity) and changed race night proved to be disastrous. I live less than 1 mile walking distance from the track but couldn't be bothered to go and I could hear the bikes from back garden (!) despite previously being an ardent fan(attended every home and away match in 1976) . Financial pressures meant that the season was cut short with a series of double-headers. I think that if the race-night had been kept the same they might have stood a chance. I did however go on some of the away coach trips to see new tracks and some were legendary Forward to 1984 and Peter Adams revived the Wolves in their traditional top league position.
-
Totally agree with you as Wolves have been in that position when we were closed for 2 years, and I know what its like not to have your 'home' track. Some others just don't get it. There are general speedway fans who will go and watch any meeting, so fair play to them, but they are a very small minority.
-
So you've just contradicted yourself when you said the track is prepared the same whether Sky are present or not !
-
Hmm, so say rain is forecast maybe the track curator might be tempted to leave it very slick to ensure the meeting goes ahead because Sky are there?
-
Apparently the track was based on Wembley's track. So..............................they called themselves the Wembley of the north. An early example of ironic humour perhaps ?
-
Not enough dates, Cradley may ride their fixtures 50% at Wolves and 50% at Birmingham. But the simple fact is fans will not watch their team elsewhere as it not 'their ' team. Wolves closed in 1981 and 1982. Cradley was 10 miles away and Birmingham 15 miles. During those 2 years I went to 1 speedway meeting and that was at Birmingham when a friend asked me to go with him.. Without your team it is not the same. I wonder if Starman would watch 'Poole' if they track shared at Swindon ?
