i think you are right, and that it was: The National Press Trophy at Wimbledon 23 July 1967

Best example I can think of is Andy Smith 2002 Grand Prix regular 2003 EL rider - Oxford 2004 EL rider - Swindon ..but still managed to make a Conference League appearance for Oxford in 2003!

When I first went I thought it was a great racing track, but in my view the advent of 4 valves moved the racing line out and effectively made the track narrower and more dangerous.

complete list here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p009y2z1/segments and Ivan Mauger chose: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p009ndg9/segments Not exactly the most contemporary of choices - think I prefer Briggo's to Ivan's

What The Visa Issues Could Mean For Teams.

Most speedway takes part as part of mixed meetings, with local promoters running to their own agendas. There are only a handful of tracks that have regular speedway and they are a long way apart. Pinjar Park (Perth) is a mere 1700 miles from the next nearest track (Gilman). Mildura is in a small town (pop 30,000) that is more than 200 miles from any settlement of over 5,000. New South Wales/Queensland have a number of tracks that seem more oriented towards training youngsters (see the Heffernan Motor Series website). -
Or "The Hangover 4" :o

However the nature of internet polls is they tend to under represent older people - so it is quite possible that the actual age profile of speedway fans is even older than shown by this poll. From my attendance at a wide variety of tracks I'd guess the age profile is not far off but the gender split under represents women.

Not unique though - anyone remember the 1963 Great Britain v USSR series?

And hurrah for journeymen - without them there would be a lot of gaps in a lot of teams.

Think that 7 was correct - he had been riding in the Elitserien for four (yes four) years. Palovaraa wasn't a bad signing on paper... ...but on track, well ..not so impressive. -
1. Dylan Hancock - 12 (3,3,3,3) + 1. place in the final 2. Bradley Wilson-Dean - 12 (3,3,3,3) + 2. place in the final 3. Jake Turner - 10 (2,2,3,3) + 3rd place in the final 4. Chopper Bagshaw - 9 (3,3,1,2) + 4. place in the final 5. Billy Graham - 7 (1,2,2,2) Praise the Lord!

From Wolves programmes of that season the 3 April match is Southern League and the 3 July encounter a Provincial League fixture (results as per original posting)

That would be pretty much my assessment too. I think he could be a good 3 point signing in the 2016 PL. But not all riders settle into a new environment. I think any rational assessment of Viktor Palovaara based on his Swedish form would have placed him as a potential 6 pointer in the PL. But it just didn't happen did it?

The other significant factor was the liberalization of the European airline market with Easyjet and Ryanair coming onto the scene in 1995.

Your argument is correct, but as Latvia is in the EU your example confuses the point - suggest you replace it with Ukraine.

Don't get me started! BTW Mr Snackette's contribution was relevant and informative - I don't understand the abuse directed at him. I remember not paying admission on my first visit to Mildenhall in the late seventies - I think I had to join a club which then entitled me to admission!

By my reckoning Sweden opened up to foreigners in 1987 and Poland 1990. 1987 Swedish league featured Erik Gundersen and several other Scandanavians. Kelvin Tatum in 1989 was the first rider from outside of Scandanavia in the Swedish League Poland opened up in 1990 and several riders appeared, including Hans Nielsen, Toni Kasper, Christer Rohlen and Zdenek Tesar.

Think you should scroll down to the bottom of this page: http://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/search/0/20?order=asc&q=speedway#search Now if only an audio copy of that still existed!

If You Could Bring Back One Rider...

Sadly there were other reasons why he didn't win any titles between 1940 and 1948 -
However there is a legitimate argument to be made that would help Manzares. Put simply the USA and Australia are different countries and therefore the criteria for Americans should be better matched to the way speedway is run in the USA and not just copied from Australia. For a start it has three national championships. Secondly the AMA inscribed one is a multi round competition and takes place during the UK season making it difficult for Gino to take part. And the state qualification criterion doesn't really work given that only California stages speedway at a competent level. Work permit for Jim Terchilla? Whether such an argument has been put, and whether the agency has paid any heed I have no idea.
