Rider Changes in the championship
gmuncie replied to Cast1rn's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
The trouble with that is you would then have riders that it benefitted to be a ‘gun for hire’ Purposefully have a poor spell when in a team so you get a deflated average then the next season tour round the country guesting for everyone that needs one riding 3 or 4 times a week naming your price. -
Glasgow v Edinburgh CL 16/9/23 @19-30

Looks a little silly now doesn’t it -
Why wait till after the 28 days then moan? The situation hasn’t changed from the second Luke got injured till now. A short term injury replacement could have been signed (and I seem to remember Nicholls being announced as such before this was reversed)

Really looking forward to this one as the newly relaunched academy take to the track for the first time with (no offense meant to all those that battied hard the last couple of years) a more competitive looking side than has been seen at this level for the club since the initial days of the Dale Devils. The Colts look to have hit the ground running after their big home win over Berwick as well Stream can be purchased from https://www.edinburghmonarchs.co.uk/emtv/live/Oh8urIwhT STELLAR MONARCHS ACADEMY: Kyle Bickley (captain), Mickie Simpson, Alex Spooner, Adam Roynon, Jacob Hook, Dayle Wood, Kyran Lyden. COOL RUNNING COLTS: Jack Smith (captain), Luke Muff, Sam Hagon, Matt Marson, James Pearson, Paul Bowen, Freddy Hodder.

Poole v Oxford - Good Friday

Excellent to hear the crowd size, a very healthy crowd at Armadale tonight as well both car parks full by 40 minutes before tapes up. Fingers crossed it continues for both -
To go point by point - less Champ fixtures protects ndl as allows clubs to have teams in both, nobody wants to run double headers these are proven loss makers - I won’t argue that lack of continuity in fixtures will harm attendances but having the same team multiple times does this also (unless for cup Finals / play offs etc) while your weekly diehards will go regardless the more irregular fan is less likely to go to a fixture if they know they have another opportunity to see them or vice versa wont bother the second time I’ve seen attendance figures to back this up. - for some riders more fixtures the better but for those with other commitments that’s not always the case. Erik Riss originally was going to sit out champ this year as it was to much, Josh Pickering said he considered the same. Then others like Ben Basso had originally said they would only do 1 uk league. That probably would still have been Glasgow I would guess but who knows may have been Pboro that’s potentially 3 number 1’s gone. I like you am a speedway junkie and want weekly fixtures from April till October but we perhaps have to realise there are many mitigating circumstances why this isn’t feasible.
-
Could argue the bigger mistake was in announcing 2h/2a before it was ratified Can see more reasons against it than for imo - Trying to protect the ndl - teams that lose money per meeting lose less - riders that couldn’t commit to 2h/2a leaving the championship - lower average attendance when same opposition visit multiple times

David is great with the kids at one of the coaches of the Monarch’s academy as well.
-
Lasse is UK based during the season so costs the Monarchs less than a southern based rider who would want travel costs
-
If the rules stay the same then yes last year only league meetings counted, the new rule book hasn’t been published yet so not sure if the bsn shield or whatever the start of season group competition thing is being called this year counts or not
-
Last season it was 8 championship matches regardless of home or away
-
Unless the rules have changed (and they may have) I think Marcin would need to complete 4 meetings to get a new average last years rule book stated 8 fixtures were needed at Championship level for a new average Marcin only did 4 league matches in 2021
-
I would say if anything it’s actually the other way though as every match matters more when you only have 16 to qualify for the playoffs rather than 32. With 32 matches a team could know it’s as good as in the playoffs 22 matches in and ride to a minimum effort the last 10 (your 4 in the playoffs was never confirmed as part of the 2h 2a it more than likely would still have been 6)
-
Averages are currently only on last 10 league matches anyway so whether there is 16, 32 or any other number it wouldn’t make a huge difference as it’s last 10 anyway
-
Not really, if the two teams can’t agree a fee or if Plymouth refused to sell it would just go to arbitration
-
That’s your opinion that they won’t come back I could just as easily say they all would and all of a sudden it’s problem solved. even if we forget that next question then why does there need to be a distinction?
-
Parity comes naturally in speedway from a points limit whether that be 30,40,50 every team builds to the same. If some teams can’t afford to build to a higher limit by bringing back top tier riders they can still do this by building stronger teams from riders already here. Is a team that was for argument sakes Masters, Bomber, Ellis, Pickering Morris, Lawson, Brennan, that comes in around 50 going to be prohibitively expensive? I’m going off topic massively here though, back to my original point why should the championship need to weaken?
-
Those aren’t punishing success though rather they are promoting parity, none of the sports mentioned force successful teams to be broken up so really that’s like comparing apples to oranges. The constant race to the bottom is what is killing speedway if one or two teams can afford to sign who they want and dominate for a few years then so be it. It’s up to the others to manage themselves better and stay competitive.
-
Very true I should I have split the list into top tier guys that might come back (Bewley, Lambert maybe a couple of others) then the other guys
-
While I agree the top guys more than likely aren’t going to come over there is a second tier of guys I wouldn’t have thought it would be to hard to attract some of especially with Swedens troubles. Guys like Jensen, Bjerre, Klindt, Holder, Bewley, Lidsey, NKI, Tungate, Bellego, Berge, Lahti, Huckenbeck, If only a couple of teams could put a team to that standard together then let them, speedway must be about the only sport that constantly punishes success and plays down to the lowest common denominator
-
Who would you say these riders are that ‘shouldn’t be performing in the championship’? The problem is how far the premiership has fallen the calibre of rider in the Championship now is no better than it was 10/15/20 years ago. The main difference then was the top level had world stars in every lineup. If there needs to be a clear line between the two divisions then why is it the championship that needs weakened rather than the premiership strengthened? Why don’t they raise the limit of the Prem to say something like 50 then teams that want to can build super strength teams with multiple gp stars that would show the difference. Constantly watering down the middle tier the most varied and competitive division in the country does no one any favours.
