  1. It could be done with 5 teams but there's going to be a lot of repetitive fixtures and will the fans get fed up with it? They could probably throw in a multi leg 4TT and even a pairs competition over 5 legs to add in a bit of variety. Even a Grand Prix style competition for the riders championship. What they surely can't do is keep the play offs. It would take all credibility out of a league that doesn't have much of it as things stand anyway.
  2. Have you actually read my original post in full or are you just another one of these idiots who just glances over and makes judgement? I am not debating the photo's inside the magazine. I am debating about what is on the front cover. Go ahead and reply back if you like (after you've had a little tug that is).
  3. What a pathetic response. We've had Grand Prix's for the last 30 years. Prior the 1995 yes we had the World Final and yes the cover reflected that. The World Final preview edition was always good. The front covers always reflected the news and events of the week. Fair enough there is not much action in the close season but just accept that the current format is dull and uninspiring.
  4. Does anyone still buy the Speedway Star? It's outdated and irrelevant in todays media. I have a cheeky look in Tesco every now and then and put it back on the shelf. It's front cover is uninspiring. Back in the day the cover reflected the GP or event of that week and was a kind of collectors item. Since they just use a stock photo now of whoever the interview is that week it had become boring and doesn't catch the eye.
  5. Very sad news. Ryan rode for us at Coventry in the MDL team in 2013 and was our number one. He was a really nice genuine lad. A cheeky chappy who said it as it was. Rest in peace mate. Another one gone too soon.
  6. Redknapp won't be doing this for free that's for sure. The guy is more slippery than a jellied eel. I've read some shizzle in my time and this has to be up there. If he was such a big speedway fan he would have mentioned it a long time ago. The majority of the 1.4 million followers he has on social media are probably more interested in Sandra's jam rolly polly than speedway. I'll give him credit though, he does have a very good publicity team around him and an even better accountant. Secondly BSPN becomes Speedway Futures Ltd. Nothing at all to do with tax is it! Perhaps they should invite Angela Reyner onto the board. She's got plenty of time on her hands now.
  7. I remember when I was involved in the junior speedway scene back in the 2010's and know exactly what you're talking about. Robert Lambert and Max Clegg always turned up with top equipment and looked the part. They could get away with that because they were good. It was obvious Lambert was going to something special. Then we had other kids turn up thinking they were the next Darcy Ward or Tai Woffinden with the attitudes to go with it. You could say all the gear and no idea. One lad who I won't name thought he was gods gift to speedway (apart from he wasn't that good at all and struggles in the MDL) I witnessed him having a right old hissy fit at his dad one time and throwing things around in the pits. I was thinking if I was his dad I'd be giving the little sh*t a good clip round the ear and be selling his equipment the next day.
  8. Some very valid points there. The Rye House thing was a few years before I got into speedway but when I look back at my Programme collection its noticeable that all the riders in the National League we British or Commonwealth and there were plenty of rides to go around. I think the doubling up policy was the most stupid thing the powers that be ever did. I appreciate that from a riders view it means more earnings but it has killed club speedway. Once upon a time a rider would be identified with one club only. Now all you see is the same riders against each other in a different race jacket depending on what night of the week it is.
  9. Fair enough but I'm just looking for average's not actual amounts.
  10. Just a couple of questions as I'm trying to work out their business model. Apologies if this has already been answered. How much are the promotion paying per point and are the riders on guarantees? What are the going rates for expenses these days? What is the average attendance and what percentage of that attendance is under 16? Finally does th home promotion have to pay the away riders? Thank you
  11. I've created this topic as I'm quite interested to know peoples views. If we go back 60 years to the creation of the British League, Speedway could be defined as a true working class spectator sport. Along with Greyhound racing are we seeing the general decline of the sport as people have different interests in the 2020's? I am fortunate enough to be able to access Polish TV channels and even the crowds there look a lot less now compared to ten years ago and if I'm honest I find the racing a bit boring. I've not been to Speedway for a few years but I assume it's £18 minimum to get it?
  12. Sad news but expected. Greyhound racing is now a dying sport and the need for housing will always be a priority for any local authority. Speedway will only continue at purpose built tracks soon.
  13. The Russians would still be a class above. That said I have noticed a big improvement in the Western riders over the last two years. The main thing is they have got used to winning and not just making up the numbers and winning the odd race. I think that has made a huge impact on their competitive mentality and has improved the quality of racing. Who knows how long the Russians will be barred from the World Championship but as the saying goes - Make hay while the sun shines.
  14. I'll add Ingar Hvamstad onto that list. Rode for Poole in 1996. I believe he was initially Lars Gunnestad's mechanic. Sadly he took his own life not long after. Talking of Lars Gunnestad his son Daniel came very close to riding for Somerset in 2009. Daniel came over to ride for the Team Viking touring team that year and impressed the promotion during a second half there. They had to cover injury and needed a 5 point rider. In the end it came down to finances and logistics and instead they opted for Jari Makkinen.
  15. Probably not a popular opinion but I've thought for a while now that the speeds of the modern speedway bike are no longer suited to Cardiff and any of the other indoor tracks. The circuits are just too small and tight. I'm sure Hancock said in an interview this year that you have to have a separate bike set up just for these tracks. The indoor stadium tracks are all about prestige and putting speedway in the limelight I suppose but just stick to proper circuits. I've been to Cardiff a couple of times and it was more about the atmosphere than the racing. Had some good times but I think the time is right to move the GP elsewhere though I do think a double header at Belle Vue is stupid.
