  1. When I went 2004/5 they averaged 1200 both seasons..the days of Stoney and Steady.
  2. Yes winning the first Double for the Gunners. They have that statue in club museum. Great character, some great stories from the 70s. Still lives locally in Islington. Didnt ask him about the time he head-butted Kevin Keegan. Was arrested as young Arsenal fan at Peterborough! Not as good as Don Rogers though
  3. I follow Dulwich Hamlet, the pride of souf London, in National League South, best supported club, averaging over 2000 last season, 2019/20. Seen them at Oxford City and Hungerford, around 350 average, Chippenham average around 650, Bath averaged over 1000. Swindon Robins, probably the best supported speedway club, averaged around 1400-1500 in title winning 2019.
  4. Certainly is, have done the stadium tour with Charlie George.
  5. Martin Ashby had his motorcycle repair shop in Marlborough 5 years ago when I visited, don't know if he's still there. Rosco is driving vans and trucks as his pub is temporarily closed in lockdown.
  6. Named after the place in Surrey, where my wife's family are from.
  7. Local urchins on push bikes on a London overspill council estate in Swindon
  8. We had a street team, Carshalton Crusaders, in Swindon. Named after Canterbury.
  9. Hungerford? Rosco and Mad Wellie rode for Swindon, don't know if they still exist?
  10. Remember them New Cross 63
  11. Late 60s Mike Broadbank captained The Robins with World Champ Briggo at 1.
  12. Just chatting to Martin on Facebook. Said he rode with his Dad Clive for Swindon in 1973. Probably the only father and son to ride for the Robins in their 71 year history? Car accident curtailed his career.
  13. One of my fav places in UK, unhurried pace. Last time we stayed there went to speedway. Some of our fav walks are Sandown to Shanklin coastal path, the Sandown to monument stroll, Ryde to Puckpool. Will be doing West Wight walks next visit.
  14. Was there about 8000 there? Repeated highlights on tv. I think Amlet shared Tooting's ground last season when they were thrown out of Champion Hill temporarily.
  15. Can remember Tooting knocking Swindon out of FA Cup in 70s. My cousin lived in a flat at Figges Marsh overlooking Sandy Lane. Where do they play now? Always big rivals of The Amlet.
  16. And there was Horspath. Hoping to see Dulwich at Oxford, haven't seen that game for 53 years!
  17. New ground for City now, in Marston by bypass. Drove past last week.
  18. Be good to see a few non- league posters on the General Discussions Football thread. Can remember watching east London Walthamstow, Leytonstone, Ilford, Barking, Clapton, at Dulwich Hamlet/Casuals in SE22. The Amlet shared with Corinthian Casuals, both played in pink, crowds of around 100-200. In the 60s the Isthmian League had teams such as Enfield,Hendon,Sutton,Wycombe, Kingstonian, Bromley, Maidstone, Wealdstone, St.Albans, Oxford City, Toot and Mitch, Woking, Hitchin. The Amlet were getting biggest crowds in National League South before lockdown hit, around 2000 average. New stadium approved. My dad played for Casuals at The Oval in early 50s, just before their defeat to Bishop Auckland at Wembley in 1956, crowd of 100000. The only cockney lad in a team of Oxbridge students, and still amateur.
  19. Cirencester Town v Cinderford Town, a rainlashed El Glosico derby! Win for Ciren who go top.
  20. When New Cross closed and PC was tragically killed in 1963, a bad year, we started following Knutson at Wet Spam. Great rider. Perhaps Ove was early 60s master, Briggo mid 60s, Mauger late 60s.
  21. Can remember Bernie riding for Sweden v Great Britain 1968 at Swindon. Officially 12000 there, but I was one of thousands that climbed in! Britain won that third test, home riders Ashby 15, Broady 14, Jansson 15, Michanek 14 for the Swedes. Mauger and Fundin poor scoring that night, no points for Bernie. Sweden won series 2-1. Michanek was underrated.
  22. If I had to pick one, Ove would just pip Ivan. Hans and Briggo right up there as best I've seen.
