In what order would you place these Aussie greats???
Sidney the robin replied to Sidney the robin's topic in Years Gone By
I only see Ronnie ride 4/5 times yet like yourself he left an impression on me a superb stylist who didn't look the quickest but boy his track craft was second to none.To think he had the six year lay off until 1969 yet came back to ride at a really high level. And really his time was the mid 50s both Briggo/Ivan said he was a better rider than both of them and really that says it all.On you tube the DVD of Wimbledon shows Ronnie beating Ivan at Plough lane never tire of watching that race Ronnie totally controlling it . -

Addio i actually think that to keep sticking at it like Jason did took some doing he was often playing second fiddle to Ricko.. His consistently over a long period was superb and i can also remember in his younger days he was a bit of a hothead and not flavour of the month with everybody. But how he ended up being a complete professional a superb example to young riders and he went out at the top.Going back to Young do you think Jack was similar to Ronnie Moore Addio??? Mirac never took thing's that seriously but what a rider he was his legacy will live forever. -

Those few months he rode for the Robins however brief was a real privilege he was so quick great from the back. However brief the stint was, for me he goes alongside Briggs, Crump x 2) Ashby, Kilby, Broadbanks, Adams, Autrey, as one of the best Swindon riders that i ever saw.The Speedway world were robbed of seeing Darcy fulfill his mega potential i just hope whatever he is doing now in life he is happy. -

Collins if fit probably would of won that final, for me Lee in 77/ 79/83 could of won another three world titles. -

My greatest football memories were watching those great early 1970s teams of Leeds Utd play. There were a great team but in reality underachieved badly they were on quite alot with Keith Macklin commentating. Then after that those great Sir Bobby Robson Ipswich sides Sir Bobby was years ahead of his time he helped mould Cooper,Burley,Mills,Beattie,Mariner and my favourite Eric Gates he was a legend of a manager. That masterstroke of selling Brian Talbot for a huge fee and then getting in Muhren/Thyssen Muhren was one hell of a player even when ageing he was some player for Man Utd great days great football. -

The rain !!!! it was p.s ...g down when we got there at 6am in the morning.I can remember seeing locals eating raw fish with the heads still on grose. The track i quite liked but it was not a great meeting to watch one moment stuck in my mind from that meeting was that Sanders should of been mega tough on Muller in there meeting he wasn't the rest is history. -

Tony Gubba did the 1978 BLRC championship at Belle Vue in which Olsen won, Gubba for me like Brian Moore , Gerald Sinstadt , Gerry Harrison, Keith Macklin were all sport commentators that i liked. -

Totally agree Steve even the great Chris Harris win at Cardiff was not the same as all of my Wembley visits.I think mainly it was so special for me because i went with my dad ( who was not a fan). To spend time with him was special usually overtime stopped my dad doing much with me over the years i can still remember dad prounoucing the great Ivan MAUGER rather than MAJOR. -

Not easy Steve he rode a faultless line against Ivan, such a shame Barry gave Bernie the bolt that hole on the inside to exploit. For me though it was a irresponsible move and he should of gradually moved through on the line not bulldoze his way through like he did.I think Barry to this day has never forgiven Bernie for that crazy move. -

I believe Swindon have been quite lucky as there crowds for me have held up well .Last year entertainment wise was the best year's speedway i have seen there since the GREAT Leigh Adams days. You are right though i do believe more people now pick/ choose there meeting's and the biggest disappointment last year along with Lee Kilby was the crowd for the NL fixture and youth meeting.I would love NL fixtures to be a part of Swindon speedway but i no it is just not viable such a shame. -

Would Muller even on a monster of an engine ever of won a final outside of Germany i have my doubts. In 1983 you had to be there to witness how dominant he was on the day he destroyed a very good line up. -

I saw both Crump (snr) and Adams for all there Robins career and it really is a close one for me Phil just edges it.I just think if Phil had put that Streety conversation away for one night he might have been World Champion. For me outside Mauger, Olsen,Michanek,Collins, from 1970 until 1979 T.Jansson, P.Crump, Autrey,Jessup , Lee were the only riders who might of gatecrashed that top four and become champion. -

Great post thanks for making the effort Ben, i for one would be willing to see a lower level of competition if i had to.Speedway is four riders in a race that are of all levels you don't need four champion's in a race to entertain us i have seen that at NL level. Are people who could not stomach a real drop in quality die hard supporters?? i think not some people think speedway is an expensive night out yet people are willing to pay 20 pound for a pizza. -

So annoying Steve the late great Bob Radford lent me a Polish version of the 1972 final and it had the Briggs v Mauger clash on it.As you commented the ITV coverage?? never showed it crazy when you think back.I am convinced Briggs would of won that meeting but my heart tells me that Olsen was the best rider on the night but he made a huge mistake and he didn't make many over the years ( he did bring Ashby off once ) Thinking back Wembley was not much of a track really but the atmosphere was electric i saw a European Final there in 1974 Collins won the meeting and that was a super night full of drama as well Lovaas qualified i think. -
Boring times for all of us at the moment and to be honest i cannot see any speedway happening in 2020.So i have been cracking on with my speedway memorabilia and i have just finished completing a collection of Crump ( jnr) Crump (snr) Adams, Sanders, Young. What order would you place these legends in a very difficult call it would be interesting to hear people's views.Gustix, maybe?? could of been the one of a few on here who saw Young ride. My top five order would be 1.Crump ( jnr) 2.Young 3.Crump (snr) 4.Adams 5.Sanders.

I was a fan of Bernie until that fateful 1972 night, he cost Briggo his fifth world title i recon Barry would of scored 14 or 15 that night. -

Totally agree for me he is a breath of fresh air, he runs a good night out for everybody and the main thing is he caters for all ages. The track in itself for me is a Championship track ( minimum) decent racing and as a few days break in the summer is a decent option to say Torquay or Weymouth.Would Mr Bishop take on more responsibility??? i doubt it he knows his fresh ideas and input would be difficult to push through i hope i am wrong though. It would be great if Barry, Lee Kilby, Neil Vatcher was part of a team that could push speedway in the UK a bit further forward probably wishful thinking. -
Lambert to comeback stronger.?
Sidney the robin replied to Sidney the robin's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
I thought generally he acquitted himself very well before that injury interupted his season. Also it is worth remembering what Tai Woffinden achieved in his maiden GP series he learned alot from that year and came back even stronger.I do think the point made about Robert not quite having the set up aquipment and package yet to be a full time GP rider is right that takes time and money but he will get there eventually. -

Your point about Hancock is a relevant one, in five years time when Lambert is 25/26 he should be reaching his peak. How many of the riders in the GP series now will be either on the slide or have dropped out altogether. So you would think Lambert would be part of new era of GP riders a different ball game to what it is now.
