Sidney the robin replied to Sidney the robin's topic in Years Gone By
77 certainly Lee would not of won a series but he would of been thereabouts i did mean Lee could of won a one off final in 77/79/83.!!!.By then strange really to think Collins was finished by 1979 on the world final stage anyway. -

Very very surprised it was off, we had probably a fourty minute downpour and that was it then it started drying again.Looking at the track on Twitter it looked like you could of got it raceable gutted really i was looking forward to it. -
Keep him as a longterm project he needs time but he is doing well, nothing worse than letting him go and someone else reaping the rewards keep the faith.

I would say that Scott/ Mike were the best two riders in the World in 79 and if looking back Lee could of won it in 77,79,83. -

Good point but i would say Autrey was the stand out rider in 79 and would of had every chance certainly if the format was the same as when Loram won it. -
Have not seen Bob for a few years but see alot of him in the 80s he used the Wheatsheaf Stratton alot.He kindly lent me some of his Speedway video collection which is still a prized asset of mine always said hello a friendly bloke RIP Bob.

Vatcher for me is a very decent man, and i would imagine he would get instant respect and his nice manor would rub off on some of the young lads. Also have they now got a fitness regime set up which helps on the mental side and diet of the riders.?

Speedi how many young riders like Bickley who have a big reputation but have failed over the years ? quite alot. The crop that are coming through now look the best we have had for a few years something must be working credit to Mr Vatcher on that.Jenkins,Hume,JBP, Bewley,Brennan, those five i am pretty confident will at the worst scenario make good Championship riders.

Autrey also won the Berger Grand prix series in 1979 picking up the 1,250 first prize showing that if the WC had a been a series then he would of been a big player. -

Great post i know you liked Carter you see him at Hyde Rd his record in the BLRC is superb and other league visits. But you always maintained he had a great chance in 85!!!! i do to i dont think he was quite as good at Odsal than at the Shay but he could of won it in 85 no doubts about that. -
Totally agree all British kids should get preference great that Belle Vue did it and they have Bickley still as well and Ipswich who give Hume and Mountain there chance Vision that's all that is needed not short termism.

Would you name anybody else who could of been world champion? i think Jansson certainly would of been and i thought Crump if he had kept his Streety engine aside had chances in 1975/76. -

Jessup i was never a fan but in reality he had a better year than Lee in 1980 (Lee comeback from bad back injuries) and you could make a case he was unlucky with efs in World Finals. -

Warren,Sigalos,Adams,Jessup(not a fan) Autrey,Carter, were riders i believe at certain stages of there career were good anough to be WC.Autrey also had the nightmare like Crump to have to ride in the ultra tough Usa/Australian rounds unforgiving a EF a fall out you go. -
Scott Autrey for me was my favourite ever American rider,a class rider and a great bloke. In 79 he made his stance against the Authorities and never entered the WC it i believe he could of been world champion that year.78/79 he had two great years and he had every chance in both he like a number of riders ie) Warren,Adams,Sigalos, were good anough to be world champion but it never quite happened for them.I had the pleasure of seeing Scott in 1980 not quite the force of old but was still a class act and i can remember he also was a popular team man ie) with Kilby,Gresh,Holloway.79 was his year he was superb and i would say Mauger was the only rider better than him around the County Ground but he also has his success against Ivan.

I see Nathan for a whole season at Swindon and at the start he really struggled but he stuck at it and for about two months rode really well.I think he has improved since then and his job is to beat some of the other two pointers if he does that he has done his job good luck to the lad anyway.
-
I think Hume is nearly impossible to replace at home, Shane's being the only one capable of doing it.I think Greaves has improved but Ipswich do look weak at reserve now.
-
A different world now Moxey but i think a couple will come through and challenge Cook/Lambert in the future at domestic level anyway.

Thoughts With Danny Phillips

Going through the averages Danyon Hume and Danny Phillips were the top two 2 pointers in the championship. Both had put 2.5 on there average a real shame both are injured now fingers crossed both comeback fully fit raring to go. -
Parkinson Blackburn, Bewley,Hume,Brennan,Bickley,Jenkins,Shanes,( Flint,Mcgurk, Thompson brothers in the future) the future looks very bright.I just hope these riders get prolonged chances as they will have tough periods and need to be aloud to ride there way through it.The unlucky Danny Phillips at Newcastle was a great example of that happening have faith and some of these will come through.
