Oxforf used to have two...Horspath (still in existence) and Headley "Hawks" close to Oxford City's ground. -
With the loss of Long Eaton.........
steve roberts replied to Ray Stadia's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
I made it twice (first time the meeting was cancelled due to rain) and saw the "Cheetahs" triumph. Of course they were sort of a "sister" track when Dan McCormack was involved at Cradley, Oxford and Nottingham (as they were known). Best thing that happened at Cowley was when we cut our ties with Cradley in my opinion. -
I agree as regards the demise of "World of Sport" but the newspaper "scandal" was hyped up in my opinion....been going on for years within speedway as any fan knowing their history would have been aware of. It always surprised me when speedway fans held up their hands up in disgust at the "revelations"...all Simmo and Wiggy were gulity of was naivety and openly discussing the facts with complete strangers. I did put the question to Martin Rogers some years back in "Backtrack" and his views were interesting to say the least. I recall football back in the sixties (and other sports since) when there was match fixing going on and those involved were either imprisoned or banned for life ever playing again at professional level but it didn't effect the status that football held within the media and fan base to any great degree.

I remember Colin Martin (?) who used to cover "Tape-o' Sport" (I think that was the brand name?) and his commentary style was constant...okay for audio but when he transferred that style to DVD I found it nauseating!
-
...his commentary style often went something like "Chase, chase, chase!"
-
Was that by Wally Loak by any chance?

Classic Speedway Memories of the 50s, 60s and 70s - February Edition

I used to dread having to write Colin's name in the programme...always caused me problems! -
That's a race I would have enjoyed...it's written down in speedway folklore. My first visit to Hyde Road (1984) I remember well a race involving Hans Nielsen, PC & Chris Morton. Hans made the gate and tried to cover as much of the track as possible as PC & Mort were buzzing around his rear wheel and they both eventually passed him...one on the outside the other the inside and there was nothing that Hans could do about it! Going back to the 1973 PC & Mich encounter I recall that PC was operating both the clutch and throttle on the same right (?) handlebar...quite a feat!
-
One of the best races I ever witnessed was between PC (guesting for Dave Morton) and White City's Gordon Kennett at Hackney in 1977. They rode shoulder to shoulder for the entire four laps (PC on the outside and Gordon the inside) giving each other plenty of room to race and finished a "dead heat" as they crossed the line...great stuff!

I have to confess I've no idea what facility the stadium offers on the wider scale and to what degree but thanks for the link.

...personally I would have thought a photo/plaque commemorating Peter Craven would be appropriate in a suite/room named after him?

Great a chance to read some good old nostalgia! -
I must admit I'm seriously missing my nostalgic journey...little now appears on the forum now. Where's Sid?
-
My bid has successfully been removed...thanks for your help regarding this!
-
The seller has stated that the previous bidder has withdrawn and if my bid was therefore the only one forthcoming that by retracting he would have to cancel the auction and pay costs? Personally I don't understand what the problem is as there are two bids listed at present as you have highlighted and I have seen for myself?
-
Unfortunately the seller hasn't agreed to me retracting my bid? Hopefully I will be out bided and, if not, expect me to offer the book for re-sale...watch this space?
-
Thanks...I think I managed to do it?
-
...just received confirmation that it's been posted! Just hope now that my bid on ebay falls short or I may well end up with two copies!!
-
My Amazon account cinfirms that it was the correct book...cheap at half the price!
