Survival of The Premiership?
steve roberts replied to Najjer's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
...I would be interested to know how much "action" actually takes place during an average football match with all the time wasting, stoppages and "dead ball" situations? -

As a matter of interest is there still a "cut-off" date for meetings to be completed before the "play-offs" kick in? -
Recall the night that Carl Blackbird beat Hans three times at Cowley when presumeably all his "stars" were aligned and preparation spot on. Never looked like repeating that feat again at Cowley.

Oxford vs Berwick - Champ - 5th July

Looks to be an intriguing contest on the cards. -
I'm just quoting from the book..."Richard May became almost invincible at Tilehurst (1970). His record from June 1 to July 13 reads: Full Maximum, maximum, 11, full maximum, full maximum,, paid maximum...and his hat -trick of open meeting wins at Tilehurst in 1970 - and all with unbeaten 15-point scores". As I said I wasn't aware of his Division Two record having only watched him as a second string in Division One.
-
Wasn't there some confusion over his age at the time?
-
I didn't realise how good Richard apparently was in the early years judging by his dominance and only really got to see him ride in his later years when his away form was somewhat erratic.

Twenty heats during a meeting would be better value for money in my opinion, -

I'd agree. I went to Siverstone to watch the 1973 Grand Prix and Brands Hatch (a better viewing track in my opinion) in, I think, 1985. -

No nerve "hit"...but "popping up everywhere" as you put it doesn't take away from the fact that you appear to make a point of referring to my posts if not to other posters who post similar views. As I say you appear to have some sort of "fixation" which I take as a back handed compliment in that you read my comments and feel the need to make a caustic comment especially your latest "observation" as regards "remember what you say even if you don't" which is quite laughable as well as inaccurate but that's the usual stance you take when attempting to "debate" a point. -

Steve Purchase (Oxford) was very good communicating with fans (I recall a survey being carried out when fans were issued with a form on one particular occasion) but grew disillusioned with the sport. Following Promoter Nigel Wagsraff had some novel ideas (I actually did some promotional work at schools and outside Tesco's). -

Oh dear...the "troll" is back obviously checking my posts not only on here but other threads. I've constantly stated my personal circumstances and reasons why I no longer travel distances to speedway (I would be back round to Oxford like a shot if I lived there) and am not prepared to repeat them again but no doubt you will drag them up as you appear to be "transfixed" by my posts "cobblers" or not! -
I'm just re-reading the excellent "Tears and Glory" - The Winged Wheel Story about Reading Speedway which highlights the tremendous rise of Richard May during their Second Division days when he proved almost unbeatable towards the end of that era. He never truly found that form when they moved up to Division One but but had some memorable moments like beating Barry Briggs from behind. Never fullfilled his true potential and eventually moved to Poole after a less than inspiring year at Smallmead in 1975 before drifting away from the sport. Perhaps another rider who could have gone further in the sport?

I seem to recall that Arena Essex (as they were once called) tried a similar thing some years back? -

...which is what my earlier post was trying to highlight (despite going "over the head" of one particular poster). The Knock Out Cup and Regional Competitions (we had some memorable Midland Cup derbies over the years) added variety to the calander but promoters and ultimately fans began to "pick and choose" their meetings thus creating gaps in the calander and continuity was lost and some stadiums began to question the viability of running a speedway (although there were/are other issues involved). A lack of meetings also meant riders were looking abroad to bolster their earnings (some even turning their back on UK speedway) and the development and/or opportunities of riders diminished. I recall reading that Phil Crump and Keith Bloxsome (two riders of very differing abilities) decried the cessation of traditional second halves (cost saving exercise by Promoters at the time) thus depriving them of extra income and Phil did question whether continuing in speedway was no longer viable? The National League Fours was a great success intitially but over time fans grew tired of "filler" meetings which also included all star Individual meetings (who can forget the BLRC) that each track used to stage before ultimatly they were treated by a certain amount of comtempt by riders and fans alike. Who can forget some of the memorable Test Matches that attracted good crowds before it became increasingly difficult to stage them thru' either rider apathy/reluctance (no money to be made representing one's country was one argument put forward?) and a downturn in some nation's fortunes (in particular the USA). Yes we witness that there is a general lack of riders/stadiums/fans but the situation certainly hasn't been helped by decisions made by the aforementioned creating a vacuum within speedway today. There are other issues, of course, that have often been highlighted/debated upon many times over the years and in particular on the BSF. -
Nice to see the Halifax "Dukes" remembered.

I remember the days when riders had a full calender of meetings in the UK...League, Cup, 4TT, Best Pairs, Individual, Test Matches, Second Halves etc but apathy amongst the promoters, riders and fans who turned their back on such meetings has gone a long way in providing the state that the sport now finds itself in. I recall Macolm Simmons in his book saying that he used to have a full quota of engagements by riding in the UK alone. -
I never quite liked his green and purple however...ironic, really, that Wiggy was a great advocate of "Team Suits" however he liked to wear very individualistic leathers?

If a winner has to be the outcome I think that's a better option...never did like the 4 3 2 0 scoring system. -

Yes I was forgetting Ice Hockey having been an avid fan of Oxford City "Stars" back in the 80's. It's an American "thing" that someone has to be seen as the winners. Our friends from across the pond can't conceive the idea that a draw is a fair outcome but, then again, they have problems connecting with cricket and its rules!
