Should Tai Woffinden Ride For Team Gb ?
OveFundinFan replied to robert72's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Denmark has a very thriving speedway scene and being Danish champion really means something. To win means you beat what could be considered a world class field, unlike in the UK. NKI has an oppoortunity of equaling/beating the record held by Ole Olsen of 7 (I think) national championships in a row. Olsen is probably one of the top 10 riders in the world ever. To equal/beat such a record would really mean a lot to a Danish rider. -
Ok, so there is a rule that says there has to be at least 2 Brit riders in a team, perhaps there ought to be a max of how many non-Brit riders with the aim of encouraging development of Brit riders - to kick start British speedway. Whats the point of having a pocketful of money, spending it on the best riders you can get, to win a league year after year, when British speedway is creaking. Its been said before, maybe too many leagues, maybe too many promotors looking after there own interests rather then the biggest picture. Swindon losing a track, Coventry losing a track, Leicester really struggling..... who/whats next, how many teams in the EL 2017/18/19? I only been back into speedway for the last 3 years and mainly followed the world scene, but following threads on this forum I can see British speedway is struggling, has been for a number of years, cant see many positive efforts to develop young Brits (cause some with influence can buy non Brits. There will need to be some more pain in British speedway before it starts to develop into a force in world speedway. Cant see any strong movements towards that at the moment. and if this post now seems to be having a pop at Poole, maybe it is, but trying to be positive.
-
If BV and Coventry can find 10 between them perhaps MF is looking in the wrong place, I dont think he is going to find young Brit riders in Poland, Denmark, Sweden or Aussie (Tai being the exception) UK speedway appears to be at rock bottom, something as got to be done to start the process of bringing it up to somewhere better place then it is. Where do Poole get their young Brits from? I see they don't have a NL nor PL team but maybe they have strong ties to a club(s) in those leagues
-
Development of British riders over developing non-Brit riders. The thread I got the info re BV & Cov was the World team under 21 qualifier where Brit team seems to be struggling. So was finding out which promoters are seeking to develop Brit riders and which were simply there for the glory of winning pots. No conclusion drawn yet, just trying to suss the situation out.

On another thread someone stated BV and Coventry have 5 riders each in their team who are British.... how many do Poole have in their team (not on their books)

British Final

Diversions have been in place since last summer when that sinkhole appeared, means they will be well signposted and regular traffic may have found ways round the problem thus alleviating some of the traffic. Always best to be forewarned though and leave extra time. -

Should Tai Woffinden Ride For Team Gb ?
OveFundinFan replied to robert72's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
The statement "give someone else a chance" is very appropriate because by Tai NOT competing it gives someone else a chance to qualify, after all only 16 can get to the final. -
Isnt this thread one that a mod should step in and lock it, and preferably sooner than later cause its probably gone on too long anyway. Whoever started the thread should not have done in my opinion.

Our local theatre charges £1 when ordering online but they are sent through the post to you with a consequential charge involved. I would have thought it better if you book on line and print the ticket yourself then no extra charge, if you want tickets sending to you then you pay £1 ticket extra, maybe capped at £5 if a group booking. Our tickets for the SWC are booked, in the yet to be erected stand on bend 3/4, we paid £1 each extra but that will included the postage and handling fee by the third party. -
Should Tai Woffinden Ride For Team Gb ?
OveFundinFan replied to robert72's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
No, when he didnt win his 2nd...... but you knew that. Majority of us dont know what it like to be world champion (in any discipline) so can only imahine what pressures and committments are involved. It was obvious in 2014 he was tired and especially toward the end oof that season he was not at his best. Remember too how many timss he had trouble with dislocated his collar bone, having plates put in and still riding, probably you or I would not be able to cope. I am not Tais biggest fan but i give credit where credit is due, and I for one agree giving giving uk a miss is a neccessity if he to win a erd world title. -
2016 Speedway Gp Qualifiers

Why is there talk of Hampel getting a wild card for next year - have I missed something and he has witdrawn from this year? As tho the Lagutas possibly in line for wild cards - they both show top class performances from time to time, especially Gregoriy, but not too sure they deserve permanent wild cards. Same oes for Vaculik - great rider when on top form, but can he do it for every GP. I do like the two Lagutas and Martin, but............ -

It might sound a good point to ban Poles riding here and enhancing there riding experiance, but do that and has said they could just ban Brits from riding in Poland, and I think British riders need the experiance of riding the larger Polish tracks more then young Poles need the experience of riding smaller Brit tracks. As already said, the UK is no longer the force it was back in the 60/70/80's. -
Where did you get that idea from I stated it would be an interesting talking point as he develops... and we wont have long to wait I dont think.
-
For making a scathing statement before he had all the facts. Fundamental mistake. Before you make a decision (any decision) you should know all the facts

Has Buster Chapman apologised for his remarks re BV opening meeting???????

Personally I think times have changed since then. European speedway existed back then but not to the degree it is now. With the top league speedway being in Denmark, Sweden and Poland to me it makes sense as a world class rider to compete in them to earn the money to give me a reasonable standard of living when I retire. 3 meetings a week on a regular basis is a tough call for anyone, what with the travelling, looking after bikes, and having a home/family to think of. Having a meeting in the UK, especially now as the EL is a shadow of its former self, is one meeting too much, added of course that one meeting per week moves about the week making any sort of planning/routine go out the window. OK, it could be said that competing in the UK Championship is a semi plus a final..... but then the organisers put the semis so close to a world championship gp weekend. What does a top rider do? Go out full belt in a UK championship semi, risking injury when next day he is in a world GP match with a chance of winning the GP/world championship. There would be a serious risk this world class rider would race if he gated, but not be so keen to mix it and risk injury if he didn't get the gate. I know which I would choose, and to make it clear, it would be the latter - tootle round. And if you notice that is what Tai seems to do in the GPs anyway. If he gates he goes for it, if he not in the front after a lap he sometimes (not always) settles for 2 points or even 1, knowing points make prizes and even one point at the end of the season could mean the difference to being world champ or not. To me, Tai is thinking sensibly, and with British speedway being in the state its is, I don't think it matters one jot to press coverage whether Tai is in the British final or not. I am sure they will be interesting discussion re Robert Lambert as he develops, will he ide in the UK or will he elect Den/Swe/Pol as his means of league career and do the same as Tai - its only a matter of a short time before we find out IMO.
-
If I remember rightly Fundin didn't want to ride in/for Sweden one year and they banned him from the world championship, that spoilt his run of every year being in the top 3 on final night. There were a few others who had dust ups particularly with the Swedish authorities, so Tai is not breaking new ground.

Hi Phillip, did Buster give a timescale for when this task of re writing the rules? For the start of 2017 maybe?

I was reading it that it will be compulsory for a UK rider to actually enter the competition. Probably read it wrong. -

Is that real? Even for a rider who does not want to ride in the UK EL? Dangerous move - BSPA may be kicking themselves up the backside -

Whatever you think of Woffy withdrawing his service from this years British championship, you cannot impose a penalty without first warning that penalties are in place and will be enacted. And I know that this year he announced he wasnt going to do the championship at the very start of the season, BUT it doesnt help any rider, from any country, who has a tight schedule riding abroad, for the ruling powers to select qualifying rounds that essentially clash with a gp. Only an idiot would want to ride a semi final uk championship round the night before a world gp in a country some distance away and miss practice in the process.
