The red ones with the chequered pattern, They were provided by a sponsor & he always hated them. I always regret selling them. Ray is now semi-retired, but still does a bit of HGV driving. Dosen't go to speedway nowadays though. 8)
One of my best memories was sitting in the Blackbird Road changing rooms with the team for the first time, & getting to talk to him. Also I remember buying a set of leathers off him & him having to come round my house to borrow them back as he'd forgotten to pack his & was on his way to Kings Lynn.
I can also remember the red face mask & scarf he used to wear, & the way he so often twitched at the starting gate before a vital last heat decider, causing one of the opposition riders to break the tapes. Happy happy days.
Don't forget yer banjo if ya ever visit Syston In Leicestershire son (hoigh spit), dang my hide.
This is a local shop for local people, there's nothing for you here.............!
Think you're getting mixed up with Brian Mckeown
Surely you're both getting confused with Acorn Dobson, used to ride for Kings Oak........Acorn........Oak.........geddit?.................anything good on tele tonight? :x
sorry Lt...thought i deleted it before anyone saw it.
i thought it was a bit lame, until i saw you post it and now i know it was lame
It might have been lame, but it made me laugh & I claim full credit for it, so clear off & make your own jokes up. 8)
True, I could go to Coventry every week, there again I could stay at home, rub myself all over with a cheese grater & roll in salt..difficult choice. 8)
I spent a bit of time with Soldier Boy on my various travels & he was a real character. I can still remember him being chased round Hackney stadium by irate fans, & still he returned to the home straight to taunt them again before the end of the meeting.
I believe he worked as a storeman in a military establishment somewhere, but he couldn't have spent much time in the store because he travelled all over the country.
You always knew when he was in a stadium before you saw him because he used to wind the crowd up. It's a real pity there aren't more characters like him around, but there again there aren't many characters riding these days either. Can you imagine if Jack Millen were around today, he would be fined & banned constantly.
Anyway, I'd love to chat more but the nurse has arrived to give me my medication & bed bath.
