TORRO TORNADO WATCH 2014/003 A TORNADO WATCH has been issued at 1045GMT on Monday 9th June 2014 Valid from/until: 1045GMT - 2100GMT on Monday 9th June 2014, for the following regions of the United Kingdom & Eire: Parts of (see map) NE England Lincs Midlands E Anglia THREATS Tornadoes; hail to 30-40mm diameter; wind gusts to 60mph; CG lightning SYNOPSIS Shortwave trough moving NNE across the area has promoted elevated thunderstorms this morning across W Midland, ref. TCD002 below. Surface observations of temperature and dewpoint close to the cluster, especially the SE side of it (currently over N Midlands) suggest that surface-based activity is possible. Backed low-level flow ahead of this cluster suggests low-level rotation is possible, and low LCLs suggest a risk of tornadoes. Deep layer shear is sufficient for cell organisation and possible supercells, with the risk of large hail/damaging winds. The highest risk is with this cluster, from ~Derbyshire NNE through W and S Yorks to N Yorks, over the next few hours. Other storms, perhaps severe, may form to the SE of this cluster, also with the risk of large hail/tornadoes, although the risk lowers with SE'wards extent, due to 1) veering low-level flow as frontal system moves NE, and 2) cirrus shield from multiple MCSs over the near continent.. http://www.torro.org...te/forecast.php -

he problem is the rain/storms of today are convective, and this means there isn't a band of rain/showers moving in a specific direction/speed.. The rain/storms are spawning all over the oche today!! Bubbling up here, to die 30 miles further up the road.. If you get a storm today, it lays seeds for other storms later, convection of the moisture in the air and evaporation and then convection of the rain from previous storm/s.. This morning a storm brew from absolutely nothing over Hereford, grew to huge proportions by the time it hit Stoke, only to die back to nothing by the time it got to Manchester, the storm you're having at the moment was just a small thunderless shower an hour ago over Chesterfield.... It will calm down, when it cools down...... Now, covers would work on a day like today..... -

Blackbird Rd was one of the fairest tracks in the Country, there were no overtaking issues under the Martin Rogers tenure! Remember Les Collins and Colin Cooks blasts around the boards passing on the tote bend? Neil Collins and his unbelievable passes underneath riders on turn 4, better known as the City bend, Mark Courtneys back straight swoops, Steve Regeling passing outside on turn 3, we were spoilt for passing, and it was important you could as we were generally as a team, woeful out the gate.... There was some alarming passing manoeuvres some nights and some equally alarming crashes, but it was a reasonably safe track to crash at.... Very forgiving catch fencing all the way around, and the track was manicured by Colin Merideth, cancellations were few and far between, even after the once a month stock car meetings.... -

Weather is a bit hit and miss for this one..... Heavy showers in the morning will push up the spine of the UK, turning thundery once the day heats up, expect thunderstorms to hit Manchester around noon accompanied with torrential rain, hail and squally winds, the storms should pass through rather quickly, and warm sunshine will punctuate the storms. It's possible the storms will die down late afternoon and leave a reasonably dry evening.. Really hard forecast, models are in conflict over certain components... -
Rained-off Meetings Then And Now
Shale Searcher replied to mike1944's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Vince, can you remember in the 70's and 80's before pre cut to fit modern goggle tear-offs were common place, riders used to have a couple of bulldog clips screwed to the helmet peak and they used to cut sheets of stiff, but thinnish perspex squares with creased corners in the clips.... So there was distance between throw away lens and goggles, I seem to remember some riders managing to have half a dozen fresh pieces on per race when wet.. could that method be better for today's wet meetings...??? -

That looks fine, how's it for movement, do you have armour underneath? I have always liked race suits with black as the base colour, and with sponsors logos on .. What thickness is the hide? -
Big Change In Forecast, As Of 18.00 Friday 6th June.. Quite a big downgrade in the storms forecast for Friday overnight and Saturday day/evening... The theta e plume has now arrived, actually it arrived this afternoon and the cold front this evening is now over west/mid Wales.. The implications of these timeing errors are roughly as follows... Elevated storms will nip over from France in the early hours of Saturday morning and will interact with the cold front, big rain events anywhere south of the Midlands, elevated lightning and hail, these will push up the centre of the UK but will probably die out when they hit the Midlands... Now, this will leave in its wake, a trail of post storm crud/claggy cloud cover which whilst it lasts, will inhibit daytime heating, it will eventually burn off and the sunsine will trigger thunderstorms from around midday until mid afternoon for the Midlands, they won't be any where near as heavy, or torrential as previously forecast because of the lack of the earlier inhibition of daytime heating, it should dry out from midafternoon, to leave a mainly dry evening... NOT everyone, will catch a storm/s so there is still hope for Saturday evenings meetings.

Heat 13, unsatisfactory start announced as the reason race stopped.. Now, obviously PK ditched it behind Doyley, I mean caught footrest/handlebar in the air fence, but was the actual reason the starting gate not rising equally both sides? The PK incident was exiting turn 2, that's quite well into the race to be pulled back for unsatisfactory start...... -

Why would Birmingham get fined? It's not their fault they are fielding a weakened side, is it?? -
More developments regarding this Saturdays appalling weather forecast... Updated 16:30 Thursday 5th June 2014 There may be a saving grace for Central England/East Midlands, possibly a bit larger area... The cold front now looks like it's going to arrive from the south west a tad earlier, so that's rain producing cloud arriving in the real early hours of Saturday morning...... This will effect the intensity of the storms during daylight hours, because the associated rain bearing cloud will inhibit daytime heating, and convection until the actual cold front passes through, then the fun will start, but not as widespread or aggressive as it could of been.. As I said, still a very fluidic forecast, so will update again tomorrow morning (Friday)....

It seems to me that the riders who have multiple commitments, especially those who ride in Poland, Sweden, Denmark and possibly other Countries and who ride 5/6 sometimes 7 nights a week are the riders least likely to want to race in less than perfect conditions here.... As I said in another post, in those scenarios, their earnings from UK meetings must be the smallest of their wage packets, so why risk 14% - 16% of their weekly income by riding in less than perfect conditions, and picking up an injury that stops them then earning the other 84% - 86% of weekly income.. The lesser riders (no disrespect intended) who only ride in the UK cannot afford to lose maybe half there weekly income (Leigh Lanham for example) he's working in the family chip shop business to make ends meet....

Should be fine the weather this evening, any showers that shoot up this afternoon should be brief, isolated and pose no threat to this meeting. Dry, sunny, cooling down from 5pm thereafter... Perfect for Speedway!! -
Rained-off Meetings Then And Now
Shale Searcher replied to mike1944's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
There has to be a solution to the visibility issues....... What about the tear-offs on a roll? At the moment they snag a piece of string/cord and this roll out a fresh piece of clear roll over the goggles.... Work pretty well, but some riders have issues and end up with a trailing scarf of tape flapping behind them.....! Also, when its really wet with mucky spray, the mucky spray seeps between goggles and tear off and laminates a strip of muddy water and you cannot see or clear it... So what about a motorised roll-over system? Like they have on cameras in formula 1 cars? So a constant strip of clear tear off is there? -

You're right, riders have got into the habit of only riding in fine weather... The riders that ride virtually every night of the week a're probably not going to miss a UK payday once a week because it's rained off, they'll still get their ex's paid and whatever payment they have agreed with their promoters... Years ago, when riders only rode twice a week, perhaps 3 times if lucky, couldn't afford to lose 50% / 33% of their income, if Darcy Ward or NKI miss a meeting here for a rain off, they'll only lose 14% / 16% of their weekly income, easily make it up in Poland/Sweden/Denmark/Russia that week....

Because we are an Island, weather forecasting is perilously difficult to get right 80% of the time, the easy 20% is when you are smack bang in the middle of a heatwave, of a really snow bound winter low pressure!! Tonight's meeting at Poole is a classic example, weather forecast for the daytime today was miserable at best, bring on a spring-like day, the odd shower, part sunny, part cloudy, etc..... The evenings forecast was much better, and meeting friendly, however, the overnight forecast was dire, heavy rain, windy, Very meeting unfriendly.. So the daytime forecast was wrong, the evening forecast was wrong, it appears the overnight forecast arrived 3-4 hours early.... Who'd be a Speedway Promoter.. Damned if you do, damnded if you don't!!
