Swindon V Belle Vue 26/5/14
WestGorton1884 replied to Rob B's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
Troy Batchelor / Alun Rossiter ... what a pair ! Surely the onus is on the home team to try and finish the meeting ? , conditions weren't that bad anyway , its nights like this , that remind me just why i stopped going to speedway as often as i used to. shameful -

Could it be ?, the Aces finally have a team to compete for the playoffs instead of the wooden spoon -
Kings Lynn V Belle Vue 16/4
WestGorton1884 replied to semion's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
Why dont Kings Lynn change their colours back to Yellow with Green stars ? , the present logo looks like something off a detergent bottle ! just a thought -
I have many memories of Ivan , but none are better than my father taking me to Hyde Road to my first speedway meeting in 1970 , to watch the 'famous Belle Vue Aces' the smell , the noise , the ace of clubs race jacket i had bought me , the riders ....Soren , Wilkie , Chris Pusey , etc ,but none better than the great Ivan Mauger, with his trademark checkered helmet and a riding style that just oozed class ,. thanks for the memories Ivan , the greatest speedway rider ever !

Thank you maneacat , i thought the first reply was a tad uncalled for , im not a member of the paparazzi for gods sake !!! , i simply thought the easiest way to get any information on the wellbeing of one of speedways all time greats was via a british speedway forum . i am a member of Facebook and will definitely look at the page you recommended , Ivan Mauger was my hero at Belle Vue , id only been going a couple of years when he was 'forced' into a move to Exeter , i was distraught . every time he returned to Hyde Road with the Falcons he always seemed to get a mixed reception ? , (not from me, i may add ). Ivan rode for other teams but to me he'll always be a Belle Vue Ace ! Thanks once again maneacat

Fair enough , didn't mean to pry, just trying to find any info on his condition , he was my childhood hero

forgive me if theres already a post relating to this ,but im just wondering if anybody had heard any news on the health of Ivan Mauger ? (in my eyes the greatest Speedway rider ever !! ) but since reading he had retired from public life due to ill health ( alzheimers i believe ) ive not read any updates on his condition anywhere ?

Speedway is a joke ! , how do they expect to attract new fans via Sky , when they tune in to find the season opener abandoned because of a dangerous track ? never mind the thousands that paid good money travelling to Brandon , and also equally as shocking ... Tai Woofinden's ears !!! , what does he think he looks like . and to think we used to give Penhall & his fellow yanks abuse for being too flash !! times have certainly changed

Could it be possible ? , the Belle Vue Aces field a competitive team ........... at last ?

the greatest , as to be Dennis Sigalos , surely ? -
I was at that meeting sidney , it was always going to be a rout , but most Aces fans went along to see what all the fuss about this "wonder kid" was , he didn't disappoint , ...... a special talent

Richard Knight & Kai Niemi , both played a massive part in the Witches league & cup double in 1984 , dont think either got the recognition they deserved -
Legends What Are People's All Time Top 8.?

Really enjoying the Collins / Lee debate , not sure about the "PC was dominant around Hyde Road " line though it was his home track , of course he'd be more successful there , but from 1974 to say 79 i watched the Aces home & away and he was a class apart , he could pick lines on a track other riders would only dream of using !, like the Slaski stadium in 1976 ! i remember going to Sheffield one night when Wyer & Valentine were flying , and he absolutely destroyed them . I loved Michael Lee , i was at Hyde Road when he rode for Boston as a 16 yr old in a inter league challenge match, and you could tell then he'd be a star . but he was no Peter Collins ... sorry -
Get rid of 'team' leathers / Kevlar's …. in the good old days riders were individuals , Nigel Boocock in blue , Ole Olsen in black , John 'Tiger' Louis , John Cook camoflauge ( what was that all about ?)

Legends What Are People's All Time Top 8.?
WestGorton1884 replied to stratton's topic in Years Gone By
Hi guys im new to the forum , so go easy on me haha ive not been to a speedway meeting for some time , but watched the Aces at Hyde Road from 1973 untll they moved to kirky lane , also strangely enough, I saw a lot of ( due to a uncle from Suffolk ) the Ipswich Witches. So im slightly biased but ,Peter Collins was the greatest English rider of his generation . he was so unlucky not to win more world titles , the horrific leg injury in 77 , springs to mind , and it wasn't just Hyde Road where he was dominant , Michael Lee brilliant , but better than PC ? ..... nah ! -
Popcorn , used to play it before every meeting at Hyde Road

Michael Lee was a brilliant rider , loved watching him around Hyde Road , but he wasn't in the same class as PC . imo of course -
