Gelsenkirchen Off !
pugwash replied to smartace's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Don't forget IMG / BSI would have been well insured against a call off. So by binning the event and re-scheduling they wouldn't have lost much, if anything. Sky TV wouldn't really give a hoot, they don't have camera crews / personnel out there so it's just a matter of re-scheduling next saturday. (Out goes a re-run of "Hulk Hogan v Gordon Ramsey Rage Cage Meltdown", in comes the "Can Tomek Win $200k Bydgoszcz GP" which has potentially bigger audience figures that the "Ovaltine Gelsensen GP") -

Because thay cant sell enough tickets to make a profit. That's why they've binned it now. Cut your loses. Guaranteed sell out a Bydgoszcz. -

It has been mooted to me that it could be a deliberate ploy by the promotion:- Tickets sales reportely to be very poor indeed. (Just a couple of thousand?) Meeting insured for a call off. Polonia Bydgoszcz already lined up for next saturday. City Hotel Bydgoszcz suprisingly fully booked. Guaranteed mega sell out with T Gollob set to pick up $200k. I smell a rat. -

Taken from the organisers website:- Following adverse weather conditions last week and during the construction of the track at VELTINS-Arena, Gelsenkirchen, Germany, the FIM Jury has decided it is necessary to postpone the 2008 FIM German Speedway Grand Prix due to track safety concerns. The event will now take place on 18 October 2008, at ZKS Polonia Stadium, Bydgoszcz, Poland, at 1900h. All ticket holders will be refunded their ticket money and, as a gesture of goodwill, will be offered a free ticket to a BSI promoted Grand Prix of their choice in 2009. In order to obtain their refund, ticket holders must contact the agency from where they purchased their ticket. Paul Bellamy, Managing Director, BSI Speedway, commented: “We are very sorry for all the fans who have booked tickets and were looking forward to a great night of speedway. If there was any way we could have put this event on we would have, but the decision of the FIM Jury with regard to rider safety is paramount and we fully support this decision. “We now need to focus on the event next weekend in Bydgoszcz and make sure the final Grand Prix of the season is a great event for everyone involved, in particular the fans.” The adverse weather conditions prior to the event affected the moisture levels in the dirt and together with the very cold conditions in the stadium the track was unable to dry out sufficiently in order to have a suitable race track.

. Don't agree. He's the director, so the buck must stop with him, not a couple of Germans with shovels. He's shown his incompetence many times before this and it's time BSI / IMG fired him off. Let's face it, he's been laying temp tracks for 7 years now and he's only got it right on a couple of occasions.

Here it is, the new super silent bike. Loads of room for sponsors logos on those side panels.

I would prefer to see a "form" man as wildcard any time over a national second rater. Hans was a "form" rider last year, came into the GP as danish wildcard and also as a reserve and didn't he do a good job! Some of the wild cards that we've had from division 2 countries such as Czecho, Italy, Great Britain etc have been totally crap.

From a tv viewer's perspective, with the track slicked off by Olsen, it's never too exciting, but as a live venue and meeting place it's great. On the back straight there's a good mix of Polish fans from around the country where Bydgoszcz and Leszno tend to be parochial. Lots of good quality hotels, bars and restraurants unlike Bydgoszcz (and Leszno) where there are limited hotels and very few bars with no decent restaurants to speak of. Used to be some good late sessions in the Brda bar though, a few years ago. Anyway does anyone know what's happening to the stadium?

As I understand it the home of Atlas Wroclaw is now NOT being demolished to make way for a new stadium, as a brand new 44000 seater stadium is being built elsewhere in the city. The old Olympic Stadium is now going to be used for training only, for Euro 2012, and is to get some re-furbishment. Do any of our Polish chums have any news as to the use for speedway and wether Wroclaw may again feature as a GP venue in the near future. Not to distract from Bydgoszcz and Leszno, I think that Wroclaw is the best all-round GP venue and I for one sorely miss it.

Road Trip 2 - Bydgoszcz To Zielona Góra
pugwash replied to Rico's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Rico, hope that all goes well for your trip to ZG, you've obviously put in a lot of hard work to get this off the ground. We can't make Bydgoszcz this year so here's hoping that everyone that's going has a great time and gets home safe, if not hungover. Capt P. -

Small print:- Sky commentary box may not actually be situated at the track. Sky TV will no way be held responsible if winner shoves microphone down Millards throat at first mention of any of the above. -
Bydgoszcz Accomadation.
pugwash replied to Spannerboy's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
On no account stay at THIS place, unless you're into the devil bigtime, that is. The dancing / devil worshipping hall is right under the bedrooms and it's very weird, very loud and goes on till about 6am. We stayed there last year, I expected them to cart off Mrs P for a human sacrifice. According to Mateusz, Unia Tarnow had their end of season p**s up there a couple of years ago and totalled the place. -

There doesn't seem to be much interest here in this GP. Probably because the next GP is the big one at the "Mecca". -
