The Pirates always seemed to be riding against The Robins in some sort of fixture around that time. I remember a strong all-round side that included Odd Fossengen?. Rare title win for Poole between 65-85 when teams such as Belle Vue, Coventry, Reading, Ipswich were dominant forces in the British League.

Wolverhampton V Poole. Ela 2/5/16

Christ what a shock defeat again for The Pirates...winning after 3 heats then smashed out of sight. Thought Poole would roll over teams this year. Holder's 3 not acceptable after the GP performance. Hansi the only rider that will be happy with tonight's racing. Wolves will take some beating this year. -
Coventry V Swindon 2/5

Another win at Coventry for those Roscos Rampant Rockin Red Roobins. Will be smashing their way to the top at this rate. Well done Rohan. GO ROOBINS!!! -
"Killer" Hales...legend. Remember when they beat Swindon at the CG, Walshie set up all 3 goals for Killers hat-trick as they blew The Town away. The Adver headline was "Halestorm hits Swindon". Got sent-off for fighting with fellow striker Flanagan in one game. Always plenty of room on the terraces of what was the biggest ground in England.

Swindon's lucky track normally, will go for Roobins to edge it 46-44. -
Thanks macca, I'm also 60 years young! Wont remind Charlie of when he was arrested as an Arsenal hooligan either at Peterboro'. That 71 winning goal at Wembley will always stick in my mind, first title for The Arsenal for 18 years, after winning the league at White Hart Lane a few days earlier, amazing first double. We also used to go to The Valley and Highbury alternate weeks as the old man was an Addicks fan.

Good Luck to Carmarthen.. -
And Arsenal won the Double! Charlie George scoring the winner at Wembley beating Liverpool 2-1. Going with him on Arsenal stadium tour next Sat. I like 1963, I was seven...first year of watching speedway, at New Cross, and unfortunately last for them. My first world final at Wembley. And I was George Harrrison in Beatles school band when She Loves You came out. For music liked 1967 and 1972. For speedway 1963, 1968, 1969, 2004, 2012.

Well done to Killer, and Doyley, (both members of that title-winning 2012 Swindon side). Some good racing, although I did fall asleep half-way through! Pretty much anyone could have won it. Keeps it interesting. Very good presentation from Quirky and Nichy. Brilliant at Swindon as well, wish he was still here. Great to see Doyley fightback, could be Elite number 1 and world champ. Like the Dreadlock One's style, be good to see him back in the Elite..

Yep still undeveloped in a well-developed area, Kennet Island housing estate, and Green Park Business Park, nearby. A right eyesore. Good memories of Smallmead, last visited 2007 with the Robins.

My dad was one of those 50,000.

Its great this you tube....just watched Barry Briggs make his debut for Swindon at Oxford in 1964

I think that may have been the old Bamptons Coach Works

Bloody ell Swindon Roobins would be happy to have a crowd that size. I've read that Stratton were one of the top teams in the area.
-
Which area was this? We used a roundabout they were building as well, as it resembled a real track surface, until chased off by workmen! Yep makes me wanna get me bike out of the garage and go for a spin at the ripe old age of 60!yMy missus wouldn't be impressed. Perhaps I'll just put a card in the back wheel! I remember Briggo saying it was an unfair advantage for gate 4 on cycle speedway, and he suggested slanting the tape to make it fairer.

The road is bad enough daytime, especially in my rattly old banger...wouldn't fancy doing it in the dark!

I do that drive every Tuesday morning on way to work at Faringdon...one of the best drives around, through Coleshill.
-
Highworth just 6-miles up the road from me...I think Rosco and Mad Wellie started cycle speedway at Swindon, they still have the track at The Oasis. I still look back in fondness when I drive past our old patch by Coate Water that served as Football, Cricket, and Speedway ground in late 60s/early 70s.

Would have been a good match...Swindon Crusaders v Oxford Crusaders. We had blue sabres done in marker pen, like Canterbury. Most of us lived in Carshalton Road. Our street cricket and football team had the same name, but jumpers for goalposts. As I remember we were unbeaten in all 3 sports, and were the most hated team on the estate, the Poole of the day!
-
In Swindon most blocks on our council estate had their own cycle speedway teams. I was promoter, captain, manager, secretary, fixture-arranger, trackman, clerk of the course, dogsbody, and programme writer for Carshalton Crusaders, and of course number 1! We made race-jackets out of old vests worn over leather-jackets.

How Far Do You Have To Travel?
van wolfswinkel replied to Gresham's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
The Abbey on Blunsdon Hill(a.k.a The Stade de Lite) is about 2 miles from me, 5 minute drive. Used to follow Worky, near 40-mile drive from Carlisle, and firstly New Cross, 20-minute walk from Peckham, or 5-minutes in the sidecar! Swindon get fans from mainly out of town, most of Wiltshire, and places such as Bristol, Bath, Southampton, Reading, Oxford, Cheltenham, Gloucester.... -
Who's Seen The Most World Individual Champions?
van wolfswinkel replied to steve roberts's topic in Years Gone By
Saw Knutson, didn't see Craven, but had his rosette on bedroom wall, and remember night he was killed, as the old man came into room to tell me. Fundin was the best for me, followed by Briggo... Mauger, Olsen, Michanek, PC, Crumpie, Rickardsson, Hancock, Holder, Woffy all superb champions. Would love to have seen Hans Nielsen. Missed seeing all those Champs 1973-2003 with my 30-year break from the sport.
