  1. This match was the second half of a double header with Poole. Speedway Star reports Reg Wilson scored 10+1 from 4 plus a 2 minute exclusion in heat 12. Yearbook reports 5 rides for Wilson. All other scores and rides tally with the Star report. Can anyone confirm Reg's fate in heat 12, and also confirm he was not replaced by a reserve? Ta muchly.
  2. Would there be any 78 aways lurking in that collection? I have 4 outstanding queries from NL matches at Teesside, Edinburgh, Stoke and Peterborough, although the queries relate to the other teams, not Oxford. Thanks Rob, no rush.
  3. The Cheetahs had an irritating habit of not reporting non-scorers/finishers which makes compilation of accurate figures a bit tricky. I've got a decent number (25 out of 31) of marked programmes to refer to but there are several differing results. The yearbook can't be trusted 100% so what I'm looking for is someone with meeting-marked programmes to review the home results for 78 and see if they can solve any problems, or point out any errors. The file is here https://www.dropbox.com/s/yap8q1bvf23bkm9/Oxford1978Home.pdf?dl=0 I appreciate this is quite a time-consuming task but it would go a long way towards improving the accuracy of the file. Thanks.
  4. Heat 8: Speedway Star reports: Crump, Owen, Langli, Turner (exc), 74.8 Marked programme has Turner excluded replaced by reserve Garard. Heat 15: SStar: Salomonsson, Langli, Pendlebury, Hole, 74.8 Programme has Garard as the replacement, not Hole. Heat 18: SStar: Langli, Morton, Coles, Tyrer, 75.2 Programme has Hole replacing Tyrer. Can anyone confirm the results of these heats and provide the reason for Turner's exclusion? Speedway Star result sheet here https://www.dropbox.com/s/k87ffr915hsz9fq/19780519BrisWCQRVWGP.pdf?dl=0
  5. Yes Koppe in heat 4, my mistake. Thanks, I'll class this one as resolved.
  6. First ever meeting at the Groveway and a couple of things I'd like to check: Ht 03: SStar reports Koppe retired. Marked programme indicates he fell. Ht 08: SStar reports: Sampson, Bass, Casey, MacLean, 74.2 Programme records MacLean in 3rd and Casey 4th Ht 20: SStar reports: Owen, Bass, Holloway, MacLean, 71.5 MacLean is a reserve replacement for John Jackson. Programme does not record the change, reports Jackson (ef). Ordinarily I'd accept the Stars' version of events as they tie in with the yearbook, but the programme is well completed so I thought it was worth confirming what was what. If someone can confirm any of the above I'd be much obliged.
  7. Thanks for that. You appear to have given Barker's point in heat 11 to Les Collins otherwise it ties in exactly with the yearbook. Which means it's two Speedway Star errors in heats 3 & 8 to blame and I'll consider this one resolved. Thanks.
  8. Heat 2 is reported in Speedway Star Barker, J. Verner, Prinsloo, Brett, 69.8. Prinsloo, Brett and the heat time are actually from heat 3. I need to confirm the result of this heat which should include Sean Willmott and Paul Woods. Speedway Star scorers report Turner 1, Morton 5, Brett 4, Barker 4 Speedway Star heat details equal Turner 1 from 5, Morton 7(4), Brett 2+2(4), Barker 4(3) Yearbook has Turner 1(4), Morton 4(4), Brett 4+2(4), Barker 5(4) Due to a number of possible permutations the only option is for me to confirm all 13 heats. Speedway Star report here https://www.dropbox.com/s/piv7775jqhy2lck/19780825ExevBVKOC.pdf?dl=0
  9. Thank you both. I've now classified this one as resolved.
  10. Thank you both. I'll be recording them both as tapes exclusions based on your evidence.
  11. It's definitely Andy Heyes. Came out the Belle Vue training schools and rode around the northern tracks for a few years without ever really making the grade. I think he had a brother who raced as well, Paul. I may be wrong about this, but I believe Heyes was the rider who was shown looping at the gate during the old Grandstand opening titles.
  12. It's definitely Carl (with a 'C') Clarke (with an 'e') and Andy Heyes (not Hayes). Just another Star printing error.
  13. Ht 14 it should be Lawson not Dawson in 2nd. Heat 23 is actually heat 24, heat 23 result is missing. I think the meeting reserve is Carl Clarke.
  14. I thought I'd stick this one out there, as much to illustrate the, shall we say, vagaries of speedway race reporting as to get a clean-cut answer to what went on. OK, the result is reported as 40-38 in Speedway Star and subsequent Teesside & Newcastle programme results. Aggregate score as shown in the Star Newcastle 87 Teesside 68, which ties with 40-38 (the first leg having finished 49-28). The heat details as printed equal 39-39 BUT the riders scores equal 40-38. Nig Close (Tees) & Rob Maxfield (Newc) score 1 each in the details, but Close scores 2 and Maxfield 0 in the scorers. The yearbook reports 39-39, awarding Close 1 from 3 & Maxfield 1 from 3. The meeting report points clearly towards a home win - "But Teesside...just about deserved their win, even though the trophy stayed on Tyneside...". Close & Maxfield only appear to meet once in heat 11: reported Owen, Smith, Maxfield, Close, 68.0. Can anyone confirm the result of that heat? Results as printed in Star here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/r73uhf986ac2i6d/19780330TeesvNewcCH.pdf
  15. I reckon I've taken this one as far as it'll go for now so here is the Exeter 1984 file. There are still a couple of unresolved issues which I'll continue to pursue and update the file when necessary. https://www.dropbox.com/s/glpaeebol8hsxut/Exeter%201984.pdf?dl=0
  16. This one concerns the scores of four riders - Peter Prinsloo, Mick Hines, Ted Hubbard and Vic Harding. Speedway Star and 1979 Yearbook report their scores as Prinsloo 5, Hines 5, Hubbard 4 and Harding 2. However the Star heat details add to Prinsloo 6, Hubbard 5, Hines 4 and Harding 1. A marked programme matches the heat details with the exception of heat 10 where it notes Hines in 3rd and Prinsloo 4th, not the other way round. This would account for for those two differences leaving heat 2 to sort out Hubbard and Harding. So, I'm hoping someone with a marked programme can confirm the results of heat 2 and 10. And while you've got the programmes out, can you clear any of my remaining Dons home queries for 1978? 13/04/78 v Bristol - confirm Bristol line-up inc. #8 19/05/78 Embassy Internationale - 1st place run-off time 07/09/78 v Wolverhampton - Wimbledon #8 19/10/78 Laurels - meeting reserves Thanks in advance.
  17. I have conflicting information for two heats from this meeting: Ht 7: Les Rumsey is replaced by Peter Prinsloo. Speedway Star doesn't report any exclusion. One marked programme has Rumsey being exc, 2 mins but another has it as a straightforward reserve replacement. The yearbook shows Rumsey scoring 1 from 3, both marked programmes indicate 1 from 2. This tends towards a missing tapes exclusion but none is mentioned. Ht 13: Reg Wilson is replaced by Nicky Allott. Speedway Star doesn't report any exclusion. One marked programme has Wilson being exc, 2 mins but another has it as a tapes exclusion. The yearbook shows Wilson scoring 8 from 4. This tends towards the tapes exclusion option but someone obviously doesn't agree. Can anyone clarify the respective fates of Rumsey and Wilson in heats 7 & 13?
  18. Were spectators of the inaugural AJL left so traumatised by the experience that they can't bring themselves to dig out the old programmes? Never mind, here's another query... 13/08/78 Speedway Star reports Rye House 8 (Steve Davey 4, Mick Fletcher 2, Ray Griffiths 2) Crayford 10 (Nigel Sparshott 5, Jack Bibby 3, Paul Hollingsbee 2) Marked programme has Bibby scoring 4 and Hollingsbee 1. Confirmation required of heat 2 result, heat details as follows: Ht 1: Bibby, Sparshott, Davey, Fletcher, 67.0 Ht 2: Davey, Griffiths, Bibby, Hollingsbee, 65.8 Ht 3: Sparshott, Fletcher, Hollingsbee, Griffiths (fell), 66.2
  19. A final check on the averages has thrown up a discrepancy involving rides taken by Kent Noer and Keith Millard. Noer only rode in two matches, the second of which was at Eastbourne on 8/4/84. According to Speedway Star, Millard replaced Noer as a TS in heat 13, finishing fourth. I believe this is where the error lies, can anyone confirm the result of the heat?
  20. Could you give me the sides as programmed for the Poole match please? With thanks again to Tony Lethbridge, the files for the home junior matches are now complete. One final shout for the queries in my opening post (updated) before I publish the season file.
  21. Hope springs eternal for any help with... 21/05/78 Speedway Star reports Boston 4 (Steve Kulwicki 3, Martin Burwell 1, Eddie Rouse 0) Ipswich 14 (Andy Hibbs 6, Tim Hunt 5, Kevin Teager 3) Marked programme has Boston as a 4-man side, Keith Snelling riding at 4. He replaces Rouse in Heat 3. Heat results as follows: Ht 1: Hibbs, Kulwicki, Teager (f, rem), Rouse (f, exc), 67.4 Ht 2: Hibbs, Hunt, Kulwicki, Burwell (fell), 67.2 Ht 3: Hunt, Teager, Snelling, Burwell (ef), 69.6 11/07/78 Speedway Star reports Crayford 14 (Nigel Sparshott 5, Jack Bibby 5, Paul Hollingsbee 4) Cradley Heath 4 (Paul Mitchell 3, John Homer 1) Marked programme has Tony Brooks riding at #2 for Cradley and awards him a point in heat 1. Results: Ht 1: Bibby, Sparshott, Brooks, Mitchell, 62.8 Ht 2: Hollingsbee, Bibby, Homer, Brooks (f, exc), 62.6 Ht 3: Sparshott, Mitchell, Hollingsbee, Homer, 62.2 For anyone following this thread, the Rye House v King's Lynn match was resolved by 3 independant sources. Speedway Star and 1979 Yearbook are both incorrect. Result should now read: Rye House 11 (Kevin Smith 6, Ray Griffiths 4, Mick Fletcher 1) King's Lynn 6 (Peter Wordingham 4, Kevin Cox 2, Perry Ottaway 0). I've also updated a couple of earlier posts.
  22. The excellent Coventry file on Speedway Researcher gives the scores as 8 and 0. See page 51 here http://www.speedwayresearcher.org.uk/docs/coventry/1984.pdf
  23. May I just utter a note of caution regarding the file on Speedway Researcher. Unless Mark has picked up on the discrepancy and had it confirmed from an external source (i.e. marked programme) there is a good chance that the heat results are a reproduction of those published in Speedway Star. If it was me I'd be looking to speak to him and/or have the results of the 3 heats involving Pullen and Bishop confirmed from a marked programme. Scorers taken from Frank Pizzey's 'Backtrack' column in the programme for Cradley Heath & Stoke v Rospiggarna 5/4/96 give Pullen on 7 and Bishop 3. Due to the nature of this forum I am compelled to add that Mark has been a tremendous help to me, not least with Rye House information, and I consider him to be a valuable and knowledgable contact.
  24. Newport won 46-44 at Glasgow according to my records. Full season results, including Mavericks, here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/k2ibijvexw7b8lm/2000Newport.pdf
  25. I have two programmes from 7th April 1989 Glasgow v Newcastle and both have this fellow listed in a second half heat. I certainly don't remember him as a Glasgow junior, perhaps in town with the Diamonds? I can't find any mention of him in the 1990 yearbook and the internet is coming up blank. Does anyone recall him?
