A thought occurs - if live updates & mobile phones had been on the go back then, would they have had time to relay the information before the next race was out?

And not a mediocre journeyman to be seen...

If your brains were dynamite you wouldn't have enough to blow your head off. Mediocre. Adjective. Described in Collins as "often derogatory". You are using it in that context.

Can I just confirm that is the result of the heat (R,B,W,Y) ? -
99% of my speedway viewing was at NL level. I have watched so little modern PL racing - I haven't been through a speedway turnstile in a decade and didn't attend on anything like a regular basis for a decade before that - that it's impossible for me to compare the two with any degree of accuracy. What I do know is that the desciption of 'mediocre' is the sort of antagonistic comment I've come to expect from certain members of this forum. Accordingly I, as should you, choose to treat both post and poster with the disdain they deserve. Or crave. And perhaps someone can explain why, while watching this sport the length and breadth of the country for 15 years, I never once encountered any one of the plethora of sanctimonious, truculent, pompous, ill-informed, greeting-faced excuses for human beings that choose to haunt this forum with their nothingness. Actually, don't bother. I'm long past caring. And judging by the swathes of empty terraces that greet me on Sky, so is practically everyone else.

Great stuff! Steve Lawson had the dubious honour of challenging Stan Bear for the Silver Helmet. I've spoken to half a dozen people re. the time and none of them had it so I doubt it exists, at least in the public domain. 25 heats, now you're talking. And I'll wager it was all wrapped up by ten o'clock. I'll also wager you didn't have to stand around for an hour while they picked Martin McKinna out the fence in heat 12 - he ended up with a hefty dental bill if I recall and was lucky it wasn't more serious. Regarding the rain, even when Glasgow sneaked off to Workington in 87 it managed to find us - abandoned at Derwent Park and rained off at Poole! -
Gaun Sidney, punch his lights oot

With thanks to a Boston fan who contacted me off-forum, this mess has been sorted out and confirms multiple reporting errors in the Star. The yearbook scorers are correct.

Bryn, is this a quiz or are you just trying to plug gaps in your stats? 1. Trick question! Crayford and Reading competed in the 1983 Southern JL. 19-5 to the homesters. 2. Chris Hunt 3. Wild guess - Chris Chaplin, Mike Warren & Phil Ranson. 4. Cradley Heath bottom, Milton Keynes 2nd bottom. Get the 1978 programmes out, I've got a one that could do with sorting out

My mate took one to Shawfield regularly. Then they got married...

Not at this time, sorry. Maybe something to look at in the future but for now I want to get this 1978 file published.

Reported as 'The Netherlands' under the headline 'Bristol win in Holland'.
-
Speedway Star reported the heat details but unfortunately they don't tie in with the scorers published in the report or in the yearbook. Dutchmen Kroeze and Stemen should score 8 apiece, but are shown as 11 and 5. Bulldogs Cribb and Boocock should score 4 and 1 respectively, but are shown as 5 and zero. The race formula was also slightly different to the 'traditional' 13 heats. And the Star didn't report the heat times. The Bristol programme, and I'm working with almost a full set here, makes no mention of the result. So, I'm looking for confirmation of the heat results, the riding orders and the heat times. Star results below, note that the riding orders are 'best guess'. https://www.dropbox.com/s/p9qq7yhdthsthri/19780723NethvBrisCH.pdf?dl=0

Thank you so much for all that information. That 48-47 match is remarkable for the number of home fallers which possibly kept the score closer than it should have been. Interesting to note the junior challenge match in 1984 took place, I've carried a note for years that it wasn't run! Great work, cheers. -
Heat 6: A marked programme, signed by referee Peter Ryall no less, has Langli replacing Garard as a TS in y/b. Garard then comes in as a replacement for Gresham in white, the Yank being afforded an 'ex'. It's reported Gresham only took 1 ride before withdrawing so I'm assuming he was excluded on 2 minutes but this fact was not reported in the Star. So I need someone to confirm the above version of events or otherwise. As an aside - in the 3rd heat of the ROTN a S. Petterson finished in 2nd. Not a junior as far as I can see, any recollection of who this rider was? A trial Swede perhaps?

You are correct regarding conditions in 1983, a pre-meeting thunderstorm flooded the track. Everybody mucked in to sweep away the water and the match started an hour late. There was definitely an SJL match that night, Glasgow beat Berwick's NBS Brigands 12-6. I have the scorers from Speedway Star and I know it must have taken place that night because it's the only home match I missed in 1983 and all the rest check out. Both Yeates & Simon Cross were unbeaten that night. It always seemed to rain when the Wildcats were in town! -
Speedway Star reports: Ht 01: Hines, I. Clark, Hunter, Hack, 69.4 Ht 06: Hines, I. Clark, Askew, Meredith, 70.0 Speedway Star and yearbook scorers indicate that Clark won one of these heats with Hines second - can anyone tell me which one?

Thanks Ray, another one off the list! Regarding Weymouth, might as well just keep it in this thread, my Glasgow-related queries are as follows: 11/05/1982 at Weymouth - any additional race results 26/04/1983 at Weymouth - confirm & update these 2nd half results https://www.dropbox.com/s/idxhdln7smihu3j/19830426WeymvGlasNL2ndhalf.pdf?dl=0 08/07/1983 at Glasgow - full SJL heat details & any other 2nd half races 19/07/1983 at Weymouth (KOC) - Heat 13 Evans and Irving helmet colours (double change) 17/07/1984 at Weymouth - full 2nd half results inc. junior matches (if staged) And if you followed the Wildcats along the coast: 02/07/1985 at Poole - Silver Helmet time 29/07/1986 at Poole - 2nd half results -
Heat details were not reported in the Speedway Star. I have a marked programme which concurs with the scorers as printed in the Star. The yearbook however awards an extra ride to Nigel Davis at the expense of Kris Lane so I'd like someone to double-check what I have, confirm the time of heat 10 (not marked) and who Wildcats' #8 was. Racecard file here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7qqfgeeqmqttiuf/19780813MKvWeymNL.pdf?dl=0

Yes indeed. I've also forwarded those scans to my Coventry expert. Many thanks again.
-
Excellent, many thanks. I think that resolves the 3 major problems and proves them to be a combination of Star & yearbook errors. Rob, I'd still welcome your input when you have the time.

I know Barrycuda can't help with this one, so hoping someone else can help sort this kerfuffle out. Speedway Star heat details show Dave Allen scoring 10. Speedway Star scorers and the yearbook award him 11. Heat details = Gary Guglielmi scoring 9. Star scorers & yearbook = 8. Heat details = Keith Bloxsome scoring 3. Star scorers concur with 3. Yearbook scores 4. Heat details = Stuart Cope scoring 8. Star concurs with 8. Yearbook scores 7. Heat details = Chris Roynon scoring 4. Star scorers = 3. Yearbook concurs with 4. Heat details = Geoff Pusey scoring 8 from 4 rides. Star scorers = 10. Yearbook = 9+1 from 5. Heat details = Charlie Monk scoring 7+1(5). Star scorers = 6. Yearbook = 6(4). Racecard from Speedway Star here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/3xdo96gtpz4ww3b/19780722BostvBarrNL.pdf?dl=0 Anyone that can sort that lot out, please get in touch.
