  1. The quiz ran for 4 weeks from 18th April until 9th May. The numbers grid remained the same. The results of each quiz were: 18th April - Barry Briggs (12), Ole Olsen (3) and Clive Hitch (48). 25th April - Jim McMillan (30), Ivan Mauger (1) and Jimmy Gooch (96). 2nd May - Soren Sjosten (19), Roy Trigg (6) and Bernie Persson (24). 9th May - Bengt Larrson (11), Bruce Cribb (10) and Ronnie Genz (95). Theories: 1. Entrants made their picks and the promotion simply selected the winners at random and allocated the numbers thereafter. 2. There was a predetermined list of riders and numbers and it was just your luck whether you were correct or not. Either way there was no logic involved. Could it have been a mad attempt to encourage programme sales?
  2. Jelaca won the meeting with a 15 point max.
  3. No problem. I've also spotted a typo in the 30th April Glasgow Silver Helmet races - the time for heat two was 58.8 (NTR), not 58.0.
  4. Steve, the Tom Owen meeting results are on page 46 in this file on Speedway Researcher http://www.speedwayresearcher.org.uk/newcastleleague history 3.pdf
  5. Asking on behalf of a friend - both teams used only 8 of their own riders throughout the season but did either use any guests?
  6. Does anyone have the result of this junior match, a 13-heat affair staged in the second half of the Wimbledon Pairs event?
  7. Carter broke his ankle in his third ride with Tigers at Stoke.
  8. Sorry wrong link - that video came on right after the BV one HenryW has sorted it out though

  10. According to the 11/10/1987 B.L.R.C. programme the Belle Vue track record was 66.4 shared by Chris Morton (set 29/7/83) and Erik Gundersen (14/10/84). It wasn't beaten in the B.L.R.C. or any of the subsequent matches at Hyde Road which I've found details for so unless it was lowered in the 17/10/87 double header with Oxford & Hackney (the only meetings I haven't been able to check) that's how it stood at closure.

  13. Cheers. Just been having a look at November meetings, thought I had missed one. Just to expand on that, I make it only 2 meetings have been run in November since 1989 (not including training track/novelty meetings) so it's hardly a regular occurrence.
  14. Charlie, Kenny and Martin McKinna rode together for Glasgow in 1989 and 1990.
  15. Jon Jon White was part of the Glasgow junior set up from late 1986 to 1989. He was always decked out in black with a tartan scarf. Even his machinery and van were black. His first appearance at Glasgow was in the Junior Grand Prix meeting in 1986 scoring an impressive 10 from 5. He was given a couple of outings for the junior side and was non-riding #8 for the senior side at Rye House. Ever friendly and determined to make it as a rider, this snippet from the Glasgow programme summed up his enthusiasm for the sport: "Junior Jon Jon White travelled from his Lake District home to be our #8 at Rye House, did the big end of his van on the way, hired another, and all for a second half ride and the grand sum of a fiver for his troubles!" I'm not 100% sure on this but I think a bad accident at King's Lynn in 1990 curtailed his racing career. Hans Nielsen appeared at Shawfield in 1988 to take part in a series of match races - he easily defeated Shane Bowes, Steve Lawson and Kenny McKinna. A planned 4-rider race ended up as a match race after Bowes & McKinna piled up at the first corner leaving Hans to defeat Phil Jeffrey in what was then a new track record of 65.6.
  16. I don't have a marked programme but the Workington programme of 12/04 has the track record of 74.5 credited to Ian Hindle.
  17. Just noticed your post brianmaxtedfan. Many thanks for the information. I don't have the second half results from 28/05 at Halifax - could you provide them please? Heat 1 at Sheffield, can you tell me who replaced who in white & yellow/black please? And can I just check the time for heat 3 at Sheffield - 89.8?
  18. Thanks to Graham Gleave for contacting me off-forum with the Belle Vue v Berwick information. Requirements list updated.
