Sheffield v Peterborough Monday 3rd July
Steve55 replied to 4BenMoran's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
What really miffed the fans last night was the fact that they rushed through heats 8 & 9 whilst it was pouring down with rain, what can be worse for the riders safety when those at the back get filled in and can't see where they're going. Jenkins actually pulled up in 8 and tootled round as he couldn't see and Ellis was totally coated at the back in 9 and lost yards as the race went on. Then the rain stopped, the riders came out on track and had a look. It was decided to grade the track and Graham Trollope brought the tractor to the gate, but then it was decided they wouldn't grade it. All the time the clouds were passing and blue sky was visible. Heat 10 then took place, Holder off gate 3 didn't get away too well but passed everyone out of bend 2 down the back straight. There was a tussle for second between Howarth and Cook and Basso rode around at the back apparently totally uninterested. That gave the fans the impression that the track WAS raceable. Then both teams had meetings and it was obvious that it was going to be abandoned. No attempt was made to try and improve the surface, the sun was shining, there was no hint that there was more rain on the way (both visibly and on the apps) and a result they had a very unhappy crowd. If just a little effort had been put in to try and improve the track surface it would've been appreciated (after all it was only just 8.35) we all know rider safety is important, but so is making an effort so the fans get their moneys worth. This was another bad day for this sport, no wonder it's dying on it's arse!- 76 replies

It'll be a good meeting for the TV if your prediction is correct!

Don't know why they don't adopt the Rugby Union system of time keeping. When there is a stoppage in play for an injury or substitution, just stop the clock (fourth official could do it and it could be on show to everyone in the stadium), that's if the fourth official isn't being abused by one of the managers or his staff! Everyone could then see when 45 and 90 minutes are up and the ref blows the whistle, unless a penalty is being taken! That's it. It would stop all the bo11ocks of players going down feigning injuries, cramp etc., and if a team are well infront and are obviously time wasting, like goal keepers catching the ball and diving to floor where they then lay for anything up to 30 seconds at a time, they get a card - they'd only do it once or they're off! The timing of football games at present is a joke, what with substitutions, goal celebrations and supposed injuries it's anyones guess as to how they calculate added time!

What a perfect evening for a speedway meeting ........ pity about the hour an' a half of torrential rain that came down between 11 and 12.30! It appears that the gods against speedway are at it again this year, I told the wife not to book that holiday in late September!!!!!!!

There's three quarters of a page in this weeks SS reporting on this incident, with quotes from both riders!

Sheffield -V- Belle Vue 23rd March
Steve55 replied to Phil The Ace's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
Watching the practice yesterday Bellego looked good, whereas Howarth was all over the place when he was doing 'starts', bike was up and down, all over the place. He didn't look happy! Think the track will take a bit of rain today, as long as it doesn't rain all afternoon! They were putting a bit of water on it after grading yesterday evening. -
League Cup Final Sheffield v Kings Lynn
Steve55 replied to RS50's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
Yes it's been cloudy but dry up to now (just before 2pm) . There was quite a lot of over night rain and just seen the forecast for the rest of the day which showed what was described as "torrential rain" coming from the west over the Pennines, starting around 4pm and lasting around 2 hours! Doesn't bode well I'm afraid. -
Shame on Sheffield

The main thing is Belle Vue (in a way) have their own stadium, Sheffield are dependant on their landlords for the use of their stadium, which unfortunately has multi uses. -
Sheffield vs. Belle Vue Grand Final 2nd Leg 13/10/22
Steve55 replied to TTT's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
Those two incidents were totally different the Holder exclusion was because he 'brushed' against Wright as he was passing him in more or less a straight line. Kurtz tried to do his 'blocking' move by swinging his rear wheel out. Unfortunately he was too late with it and wiped out Kerr's front wheel, causing him to fall. -

She needs to go to Specsavers then!!! -
Not only did he get (and regularly gets) riders names wrong, did anyone else hear him after the break following heat 4. He said: "welcome back the score here is 14 - 10 with the Aces 3 points behind." Honestly not only is the guy an embarrassment to himself and Eurosport, but it's criminal that's he's getting paid for it! His hairdo ain't doing him any favours either, unless he's had it done as an attempt to distract people from actually listening to him!

We've also made the decision not to go and we're only 5 miles from the track! There was a lot of rain a couple of hours ago and it's been drizzling for the last hour. The worst of the rain forecast is between 7 and 9! Think they're determined to get this on even if it means waiting to ride heats between the worst of the rain and complete 10 heats to get a result. That means this might go on until around 10 pm and be completely devoid of any racing and entertainment, and I'm not prepared to waste my time with that. They had around 5 to 6 hours on 25th August to prepare the track, on what was a beautiful afternoon and evening and couldn't be ar$ed. So afraid I can't be tonight. Hope I'm wrong for all those who turned out tonight, but we're not bothering.

Rain forecast from 4pm to midnight, be surprised if this isn't pulled before 5pm!

I have to agree with your comments and view of the situation at Sheffield Speedway. With the way things currently stand, I and it appears quite a few others on here would have thought that the Sheffield Promotion would have busted a gut to try and get tonights meeting on. All the riders are in the country - aren't they? Yes the weather was a little wet yesterday and this morning. However we are in the middle of the worst drought since 1976, so the rain quickly disappeared from every where else in Sheffield, apart from Owlerton. There were obviously individuals in the know (apparently), who knew the meeting was off quite a time (perhaps an hour or more) before anything was formally announced in the public domain. Also why would agree to your landlord closing you down at your busiest time of year to make improvements to other parts of the stadium. If it was so important and essential why wasn't it done in April or May? And why would the contractors making these improvements damage other existing fixtures without repairing them before leaving ? It's all quite strange isn't it. I can't remember a season which has been so interrupted as this one. There is nothing you can do about the weather, although Neil Machin used to try and get every meeting on, sometimes when it was obvious it wasn't going to happen, but today wasn't one of those was it? The air fence fiasco couldn't be helped and was made to look worse because it was on live TV. The starting gate issue against Peterborough shouldn't have happened as that should be checked and sorted well in advance of start time, electrician on site? As a season holder I've paid in advance for something that its looking like I'm not going to get. I'm going away in October for two weeks so I hope it pi$$es it down in England for those weeks and I might just get to see some speedway that I've paid for. Mind you if it's on TV they'll probably try and ride the meetings! -
Sheffield v Belle Vue 25th August
Steve55 replied to 4thbender's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
The rain falling hasn't been torrential, and the track has drainage, which won't have been overwhelmed due to the very small amount that's fallen in the last few/many weeks. This is just another nail in the coffin of the sport as far as I'm concerned. I'm not that far away from Owlerton, the roads around here are almost if not dry now and I'm sure that they could have got a satisfactory meeting on. The SCB ought to have a nearby referee come and inspect the track around 7.30pm and give his independent opinion. If he considers the track raceable then award Belle Vue 4 points and fine the Sheffield promotion. -

According to forecast on my iphone rain stopping now, which it has here (5 miles from track) and then sun coming out, though cloudy, and temperatures up to 22 C. But if there are dogs running this afternoon they might only have an hour or so to work on the track, after they've inflated the air fence. Any body know any different - Charlieboy?
