Just to add, I think what made the 'transformation' more remarkable was Hackney were technically weaker in 1980. We'd lost Bobby McNeil, who was a solid second string. He was badly affected by Vic Harding's death and retired at the end of 79. We signed unknown Pole Roman Jankowski who was a real star and came second in 'the newcomer of the year award,' to Tony Briggs, (bloody Reading again!) That was the only change to the previous years line-up, and it was fair to say that Finn Thomsen, Zenon Plech, Barry Thomas and Keith White had reached their peak, with only Bo Petersen and Sean Willmott still improving. I still think back fondly to that year, and it was the (nearly) perfect pick-me-up to the trauma of 79.

You're right of course, I was only really thinking Havelock/Loram. Now I think about it, didn't Michael Lee have a regular column in the Daily Mirror during his year as number 1? Although he didn't create positive publicity unfortunately! Yes, Peter Collins certainly wasn't arrogant and you couldn't wish to meet a more grounded individual than Mark Loram.

We can't because no British rider has, but why feel the need to say it? It just smacks of big-headedness. Nobody was cheering louder than me when Tai won his first title, but overtime he's become quite arrogant and full of his own importance. Obviously nobody can question his ability, and no doubt he'll be Britains greatest ever rider, if he isn't already. I certainly wouldn't be petty enough to boo him at Cardiff, but equally, I wont be cheering. I'll be saving that for Bomber!

There's no doubting he's our best rider since Loram, I mean he'll never be liked by everyone.

That's the thing though, the scores before him haven't been a British world champion. Of course Tai is fully entitled to give up Britain and just ride abroad and good luck to him, but he is always going to be a 'marmite' kind of a rider because of it. I'm another who wants to like him, but there's a fine line between confidence and arrogance and he seems to be veering evermore towards the latter.
