I think Zmarzlik's brilliant, easily the most exciting rider in the series. Although he does tend to get himself in a muddle when he misses the start, as was the case on Saturday..He goes too fast for his brain to keep up! He's like a young Zenon Plech who seemed to be out of control most of the time in his early years, but he calmed down (a bit) as I'm sure the Bart-man will.

Tony Briggs How Good Could He Have Been.?
Terry replied to Sidney the robin's topic in Years Gone By
Scanning through an old speedway yearbook it was strange that Tony won the award considering Roman had a higher average and four double figure scores-including a max at Swindon on his first visit. Unfortunately he didn't really push-on to be another Zenon Plech, although he rode in a couple of world finals in later years. -

I remember he won the newcomer of the year award, pipping Hawks' Roman Jankowski (something else those pesky Racers beat us to that year!) I think he was injured too early in his career to know if he would've made it. I personally feel that he would have, with Briggo's (and probably Mauger's backing.) -
All these unsatisfactory starts in gp's just sucks the energy out of the meeting. You just think "here we go again" as the mechanics come charging onto the track and start 'fannying about' (I believe that's the technical term for it.) Half the time a rider's just reacted quickly and made the perfect start, but the ref assumes he must have cheated. It certainly doesn't pay to have quick reflexes anymore..Bob Kilby would suffer these days!

He does come across better these days. Also he seemed genuinely pleased for Cook when he beat him and was helping him when he crashed. I think I'm warming to him because I'm finding myself wanting him to do well in the gp's after not really caring how he did the last few years. Still a shame he doesn't do the British Final mind.. -

Congrats to the Bart-man, deserving winner..Such a great riding style and not so erratic these days. Good to see Woffy extend his lead and Cookie winning races. Whatever you think of Hancock, the guy's still making finals at 48 which is pretty remarkable..Although it seems that time and injuries are catching up on Nicki. Hope Doyle's not badly hurt. -

Glad you mentioned this. Was gonna lump on Woffy at 10/3. -
I remember the time Kelvin and Kevin Smith tangled and fell on the first bend, got up and started punching each other.. They looked like a couple of robots with their helmets on and the crowd found it hilarious, and considering they rode together they soon made it up!

RIP Kelvin. A top NL rider and a great character, who livened up many a Sunday afternoon at Rye.

..and the rider finishing sixth can still be British champion! Apparently it's now the law for every big meeting to finish with a 'grand final.'
