So sad to hear this. Zenon was one of my first speedway heroes as a kid at Waterden Rd.
A spectacular rider and such a nice guy. I still have the yellow NGK Spark plugs cap he handed to me through the bars of the Hackney pits..A treasured possession.
RIP Zenon, you will always be Poland's number 1 in my eyes.

Thanks for that! I'm sure that Hughie then became skipper of the "Rockets" when he dropped dowm a league?
Poor old Hughie broke his leg in his own testimonial meeting. How unlucky can you get!

Am I correct to think that Hugh Saunders was skipper at Hackney or am I barking up the wrong tree in 1974? Don't recall it being Dag Lovaas?
That's right. Thommo took over in 75, up til 81 when he joined Crayford, and Finn Thomsen was skipper for the last three years in the BL.

I quite enjoyed the anticipation of unpredictability tonight. Birkermose looked good, as did Zmarzlik and Lindgren. Shame Kemp didn't get a ride.
He did according to Pearson!

You have to wait until next year!
Hey, I remember 1976 and 1979, when we didn't even bloody qualify!!!
And 1982!

Well, at least we weren't last

That's more like it. And you can throw in Lee and Kennett.

I don’t know why nobody on this thread has suggested moving the event to Torun. The weather there is good all weekend apparently and it’s only a four hour drive away...
90° in the shade apparently

Recall King's Lynn winning at Hackney 57-20 in early 1980 and all appeared 'doom and gloom' only for the "Hawks" to turn their season round and nearly pulling off the championship.
Yes that match was the catalyst. Len stormed into the dressing room ready to give the team the blasting of their lives, only to find that they were as upset as he was.
As you say it was onwards and upwards from that point on. Losing at home to Cradley at the start of October ended our challenge unfortunately, but after finishing bottom for the previous two seasons it was still a great year.

11 May 1979 Hackney 22, Wimbledon 56 (new BL away win record)
Hackney (Finn Thomsen 7, Barry Thomas 7, Sean Willmott 3+1, Bo Petersen 3, Ted Hubbard 2+1, Bobby McNeil 0, Vic Harding 0)
Wimbledon (Edward Jancarz 12 max, Roger Johns 9+3 paid max, Larry Ross 11, Stefan Salomonsson 8+3, Rudy Muts 7+2, Colin Richardson 7, Patrick Pawson 2)
The following season on 23 May 1980 the scores were Hackney 56, Wimbledon 22
Hackney (Bo Petersen 12 max, Zenon Plech 11+1 paid max, Finn Thomsen 10+1, Barry Thomas 6+2, Roman Jankowski 6+2, Sean Willmott 7, Keith White 6)
Wimbledon (Edward Jancarz 9, Larry Ross 7, Roger Johns 5, Colin Richardson 1, Stefan Salomonsson 0, Mick Hines 0, Dave Brewer 0)
That 79 match was the only time I recall sections of the crowd turning on Len Silver. It was a depressing year all round, (losing Vic, finishing bottom.) Zenon's World Final performance being the only high point.
Weirdly enough, although the Dons did the double over us that year we won the London Cup, and they won it the following year even though the Hawks did the double over them.

So Pludra tops the Polish averages with a perfect 12.00

Leszno will win comfortably but who cares with racing like this!

Immaculate performance from Vaculik.

A shame Gorzow couldn't get a 6-8 point lead. But winning on the night seemed unlikely early on. Great meeting and roll on Sunday!

Great move from Zmarzlik. Moving out Pawlicki to let Thomsen through.

Five riders tied on 12 points in the 1981 Continental Final, although that was the amount that qualified for Wembley.
They still had a series of run-offs which Egon Muller won from Ales Dryml, Edward Jancarz, Jiri Stancl and Zenon Plech.

Tony would have won the 2000 World Championship (I think) if it wasn't for 2 crashes.
Final starts at 1.00.00 with Mark Loram.
Heat 19 starts at 20.00 with Danno.
That was a terrible decision to exclude Tony in Sweden after Mark clearly knocked him off.(I would add that that I don't believe it was deliberate, as Mark wasn't that kind of rider. He just misjudged the pass.)
The second incident with Stefan Danno I believe could have gone either way. Rickardsson did seem out of control when Sullivan passed him and Danno did keep to his line.
Loram admitted he was a bit lucky that year, with Tony a little below his brilliant best.

I do think when you are a supporter of a certain rider you could be blinkered , most of us are very guilty of that myself included more than anyone.
Exactly. I consider Barry Thomas to be the greatest rider ever
Tony Rickardsson would be number 1 for me for two reasons. He was a whisker away from winning 5 consecutive world titles, (ok technically he finished 3rd in 2000, but does anybody honestly believe that he wouldn't have won the final if Mark Loram hadn't got the second place he needed in the consolation final?)
Secondly for his astonishing performance in the 2005 series. 6 wins, one 2nd and a 3rd from 9 rounds.
In league racing however, it's got to be Hans Nielsen. He was just a points machine!
