  1. If they use form as a guide, I would have picked Steve Worrall over his brother.
  2. Same old.. .. Tai + Those who continually fail will be the four (why bother having the list anyway).
  3. I don't know how Eric is currently, but I do know that he attended a dinner a year or two ago and said he thought Speedway was on it's way out. I believe Eric Boocock said something on similar lines.
  4. Instead of banning them they should be given six of the best from Garrity's crash helmet.
  5. All very true, but that 5000+ used to be more like 20,000+
  6. I think that as there is no chance of winning it, we would be better looking at a long term strategy. There are some riders who have constantly failed year after year, I see no point in picking them simply because they might currently be top of the averages. So I would ignore the failures and stick with some new blood for the next few years. I would demand that Robert Lambert decides whether he is British or not now, if he says no, so be it. Obviously Tai is in and Cookie. I would have a squad of maybe Barker, both Worralls, R Lambert, Garrity, Blackbird, Starke and any others who show promise and I would use that squad for all international matches, even letting them take on EL teams or continental league teams. They might lose a lot of matches but something might come of it, nothing will come of Bridger, Kennett, Harris or King.
  7. I think the difference between Nicki and those he is complaining about, is that they sometimes have accidents due to close and hard racing. He on the other hand seems to either lose his head or allow desperation to affect him. The most unfortunate thing to me, is the way the media are milking it, they are just making Speedway look even more of a circus act in the eyes of the public.
  8. Possibly, but Darcy faces surgery and a long recovery time.
  9. So how come his average is falling, when he's riding at the track where he has always performed at his best?
  10. He's been going well abroad for a couple of years now, surprising there hasn't been any interest over here.
  11. I couldn't imagine them having Suchanek back after all the negative remarks that B Havelock made about him. Anyone but Hall please.
  12. You are right. I got the engines wrong. I did see a very early picture of Ron Johnson on a Douglas.
  13. I remember reading that if you rode four 2 valve Jawa's down a quarter mile drag strip, they would all be within a few feet of each other. I think it was Ivan Mauger who said it. It would seem that technology hasn't made things easier.
  14. I believe Wal rode a Douglas. They had an engine with one forward and one backward horizontal cylinders. There were also some riders using Rudge 4 valve engines, although it was several decades before the Neil Street 4 valves came into being.
  15. It also coincided with shallower tread tyres and slicker tracks. Everything is a speed factor. The development of upright engines wouldn't have been exactly the same because they can't be ridden in exactly the same manner.
  16. Yes it was. The main problem was carburettors. the early laydowns would flood and backfire in mid corner. Uprights weren't necessarily easier to ride but the different riding technique probably meant that the rider was further forward on the bike and shut-off more entering the turns. The first laydown that I ever saw was ridden by Martin Hagon, Barry Briggs used to bring one to Odsal for Kelvin Tatum to practice with and test ride, after meetings.
  17. Exactly! Get all three points up and then call for a referees inspection.
