World Cup - Wroclaw July 2023
TheReturn replied to Monarchs2468's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Thank you I was just coming to ask the same, I cant hear any commentary just the stadium noise. -
Sorry to read this news Wolves fans. I hope you can find a new home. I left Long Eaton area not long after the sport finished there, so have not driven past very often in the last 25 years, but happened to drive past last week and it still angers me to drive past the old car park entrance from Nottingham Road to see a bland housing estate and the street name of 'Circuit Drive' and 'Speedway Close' which feels like a slap in the face from the developers. I hope you find a way to get back into your stadium or somewhere else locally.

Echos of what happened at Long Eaton. A mysterious fire burned the empty pub next to the Station Road car park down, and then another mysterious fire burned the empty stadium pavilion down not long after (or may have been other way around)..... but yes, two mysterious fires left the way clear for the developers to build on it. I had hoped as the decades past the truth might have surfaced on that!

Not really a surprise. The BSPA have never marketed speedway correctly IMO and I am not sure if any budget ever existed to do so, if it did, its not been used wisely.

Has Kelv put his heating on yet?
TheReturn replied to Happy Hunter's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
My view well known. Kelvin is ok, he knows speedway and is not usually afraid to air an opinion. I find Pearson bland, repetitive, frequently wrong with his calls and somewhat stuck in the 80s with anecdotes and too much of a suck up man to the speedway powers that be for my liking. But... and I can't believe I am going to say this, alongside Kelvin it actually works, together they work. Kelvin's like a lovely flavouring sauce that makes Pearson edible. -
Speedway GB Official Website
TheReturn replied to Midland Red's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
To be honest the entire Speedway GB website is woeful in design and content which I am afraid is very old fashioned web design and a complete and utter mess of a layout. But done right, could be made to be so appealing as a fast, thrilling action with use of good images and layout. Speedway GB is how not to do it... Speedway GP is how to do it! Example, this is a cluttered mess, nothing stands out, it's all lost. Less is more! -
Oh heck, get well soon Dicko. At Long Eaton he as really well liked, a fans favourite without question. One of those riders who doesn't get the limelight but deserved it, he was a fantastic racer who knew how to find his way past riders. Get will soon

I am a bit late to this thread having on recently found out he's passed away. I just wanted to add to this. I was at both meetings, and it's been a long, long time. But this is my memory of what happened. The Tigers were at Station Road the night before and Robert Nagy beat Matousek, brilliant ride by Nagy which Matousek took exception to after the race as they went back to the pits, but seemed to be something and nothing. The following night Long Eaton were on the return fixture at Sheffield and that fateful race as they lined up at the tapes I knew what was about to happen by the fact Matousek lined up at the tapes at a funny angle IMO. Only one man will ever know if that was a deliberate crash or not, but I certainly know what every Long Eaton fan thought that night. Mild mannered Johnno, perhaps unwisely with hindsight, was allowed to go and see Robert on track, he ran back from the first bend, to the pits and went for Matousek. Although the race and match paled into insignificance, the referee bottled it by not excluding Matousek. To see him celebrating winning the meeting later on was an utter disgrace. To this day I believe that crash was a disgrace and he got away with it. I won't describe the crash as an accident.

As for Pearson, my god, he bangs on about Hancock more now than when he was actually in races. WTF was he on about with Doyle landing on his shoulder rather than head being a good thing? Speedway riders are frequently out because of collarbones. And calling the overall title lead during a race is pointless, as Bartek showed on that final bend, how many times does he do that. Awful commentator... as calling Tai winning a race he was not in last night shows.

Greg Hancock - happy retirement
TheReturn replied to screm's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Yes, but you're missing the point. Last year didn't Lambert say he struggled in some GPs because of his full calendar after originally opting for the SEC not expecting to do the SGP. I don't know what Smolinski and second reserve had planned for this year, but one would assume they have to change their entire season plans at this late stage. He was never going to be that after being out all of last season, and that's why I felt the decision to give him a wildcard was ridiculous. I have all sympathy for his wife, I wish her well and I respect Hancock for retiring to be with his family, I respect him for his World titles too. But that doesn't mean I respect some of the things he's done in recent years, the bullying against Nicki (the website post Hancock made), the lame excuse to pull out of riding at Belle Vue to say he wanted to give younger riders a chance (rather than admit he didn't want to ride) and the fact he took a wildcard in October and waited until now to retire all of which were dicking actions. -

For the SWC at Belle Vue? -
Greg Hancock - happy retirement
TheReturn replied to screm's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
It probably wasn't, but it's still bad considering he had an entire year away from the track to make a decision. I am surprised he didn't claim he was pulling out to give a younger rider a chance! -

Typical of Hancock, he could have made it clear in October that he wouldn't ride this year, instead he waits until a couple of months before the season which doesn't give Smolinski long to plan his season and get sponsors to help him with his GP series. -
Grand Prix changes
TheReturn replied to baiden's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
They should offer an additional championship point for any rider that scores a maximum in the qualifying heats (to ensure some credibility to those final few races). -
Grand Prix changes
TheReturn replied to baiden's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
As anybody official actually come out and justified the reasons behind these changes? -
Just seen the new changes for SGP qualification for 2021 and they have decided to ignore sporting and earned endeavour to ensure they have 5 wildcard to give away to those whose faces fit (as in Hancock this season). So for 2021 the qualification is: Top 6 in 2020 SGP series Top 3 at GP Challenge Winner of Speedway Euopean Championship 5 wildcards

Yeah do a good job during grand tours in cycling.

I would question 'liked by most fans', and suggest most fans put up with Pearson, but would stop short of saying they like his commentary…. But I guess speedway is a 'mates business' so whoever is filming I assume he will get the gig.
