Berwick v Eastbourne Championship 17/08 @ 7pm
crescent girl replied to screm's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
I think Jon Cook made that sneer when he learned New Holland tractors - who had apparently turned down a Lakeside request for sponsorship - had linked up with Berwick. He reportedly contacted the NH bosses to tell them they should drop Berwick ("only a tin-pot Northern club" ) and link with the Hammers. Which they immediately - - didn't. Don't think it had anything to do with the late lamented Rockets. -

Love these first four posts! TonyO being a realistic optimist and OSS being a glass-half-empty old groaner..... Forums, eh? -
BSPA acting fairly, following a precedent and indeed, sticking up for the little club. Full marks!

The funeral of Alan Taylor (youngest son of Danny & Liz, and a former Shielfield second-halver) will be at Holytown (Lanarkshire) Crematorium on Friday (16th) at 3.30pm. -

Sad news on club website: Alan Taylor, who died yesterday aged 64, was the youngest son of Danny and Liz Taylor, the founders of speedway at Berwick-on-Tweed. Despite being a double amputee in later years, Alan always had a cheery grin for everyone and anyone as he wheeled himself around our pits on regular Shielfield Park visits, never letting his situation dampen an indomitable spirit. Just last summer he took on and conquered the 96-mile West Highland Way on an adapted mobility scooter, raising £3,000 for the ‘Finding Your Feet’ charity, which helps people adjust to normal living after amputation. Born into such a ‘speedway daft’ family, it was no surprise to see the teenage Alan riding in second-half races for a time in the early ‘seventies to prove to himself, as he would say; “I wasn’t going to a World Champion, or even a full-time Berwick Bandit” before settling down in Airdrie, Lanarkshire. He is survived by wife Jeanette, children Darren and Vicky and four grandchilden, to all of whom, as well as to the extended Taylor family for which this club owes so much, we extend our deepest sympathy at this sad time. -

Looking ahead a little, the Wednesday-nighter against Scunthorpe on August 21st will start at 7.30pm, not the more-usual 7pm -

I rather look on ice hockey as a 'family sport' with an audience demographic very similar to speedway. They don't mind the odd punch-up, do they? -
The medical cover is within a promotion's remit. Berwick are by no means the richest club in the league, yet they recognise the need for double cover by having two paramedics and ambulances on site for every meeting. Promotions who don't run the risk of long delays, and turning people off the idea of coming to speedway.

Wouldn't the heat be an issue? Any less water and the crowd would have been covered in dust at some point! -

Agent Andersen, there's a call for you! -
Rebels still set for the play-offs, I suspect.

Put it this way. Matt Marson (who did nothing wrong) was unlikely to pile up any points for you, especially on the road. To accomodate Sam Masters, you can't do more than solidify the rest of the squad. You need a rider at No 2 who can pick up the vital third places and a bit more in Heat 8. James Sarjeant got 4+1 at Scunny (Tigers won by 2) and 8+1 last night at the OTA (Tigers won by six).

On the plus/minus scale of points gained and lost home and away, Berwick are one of only five clubs with a 'plus' rating. Its the table at the end of the season that counts. See you on the 28th.

Berwick are the ONLY team in all three leagues to have kept faith with their original 1-7. Five of whom were returnees from 2018. Pwoper pwomotion, Nige!

Just a note on a change in club details. The old BSPA-sponsored weblinks (ending in .co) are now dead. Bandits' website is now on www.berwickspeedway.com and the contact e-mail is club@berwickspeedway.com -

As did Barry Briggs when he first arrived in Britain. How did that one work out? -
Will many Bears fans be coming north to support the side (and congratulate Charlie) at Berwick on Saturday night?

Bandits management team would like to announce that the popular Friends & Family Pass & Kids Go Free admissions will continue for the rest of the season! £35 gains admission for 2 adults and gets you 2 programmes. This incentive has worked well and it is designed to encourage more fantastic Bandits fans to bring a friend or family member along for a night of Live Speedway. This falls in line with 2014/15 admission and programme prices and we hope you will help us spread the word. Kids will also enter for free for the remainder off the season but we must emphasise that all under 16’s must be accompanied by a paying adult. Motorsport is dangerous and a parent or guardian must be responsible for any youngsters in attendance at all times. -
