  1. I was reminded this morning by a good friend that thirty years ago, Bruce Penhall and Kenny Carter had an incident which virtually won and lost a world title, and that people are still arguing about that decision. No doubt last night's semi-final will be getting dragged up, debated and argued about in 2042. But what matters is that this week's Speedway Star will report that Chris Holder is World Champion, just as Bruce Penhall was in 1982.
  2. They are professional sportsmen. They are highly paid, especially at Elite level. Each stood to gain hundreds of pounds from their extra race. They didn't fall off to spite your play-off dreams
  3. Gary Havelock will apparently be at the Marriot Hotel tomorrow -- maybe coming up with Joe Screen? -- to watch the GP with Tigers fans and hear what's to be announced. The organisers are attracting big names as well as a big attendance it seems
  4. Why? He's a nice wee guy, but he's 28, he's a Scunny asset and carries a 5.76 CMA.
  5. Since Mr Bowden's licence has apparently been suspended, the current Plymouth promotion will surely be carrying on its business through the person of David Short? Since the tragedy of Tim Stone's death left Newport rudderless, the BSPA wisely insisted each club has at least two licensed promoters. Therefore David will no doubt be working with the BSPA to tidy up the Devils' season and in all probability be instrumental in handing over the reins to any incoming consortium, when the new lease is negotiated with the landlords.
  6. Yes, that's the Berwick programme article -- word for word!
  7. Too long to repeat, but maybe someone could scan it on here
  8. Is this a fact, or a guess? Those of us who want to be there need to make travel plans. Only thing is, if Berwick get to Play-off Final, their only possible home date for it would be -- 27th October!
  9. According to the gentleman who was handing out the very eye-catching fliers about the meeting at Berwick on Saturday night, if only thirty or forty people turn up at the Marriot the prospective buyers have a very easy choice to make. They will walk away, believing the city has lost interest in speedway. Which makes it so important for the club, and for speedway all over the north, to have a packed hall this coming Saturday. Interesting article in Berwick programme about past Glasgow problems over the years.
  10. From Berwick's club website, quoting promoter Dennis McCleary: “There is still one other outstanding away league match, which has to be staged over at Derwent Park in Workington, but they are as yet unable to give us a date for this final Premier League match”. “However, as all speedway fixtures have to be completed by the end of October, we’ll no doubt be learning fairly soon when they can fit us in”
  11. Berwick have made clear they are ready, willing and able to fulfil the fixture. This confirmed by my friend last night.
  12. Keep trying, people Quite close, but absolutely no cigar!
  13. It virtually had to be a double-header (to complete all PL fixtures by the already-extended deadline) as Workington had already had the stadium pulled from under them for last Sunday, and declined to run on Friday. Which leaves Saturday, and Berwick (who were giving up their own usual race-night this week to do it) were standing by to go over there. No idea what happens to the PL table now -- I suspect Workington will get some kind of fine for failing to complete fixtures.
  14. Who really cares about form away from home? Let's face it, Gjedde was pretty good at away fixtures -- so indeed was Willie Lawson. To put on an entertaining, thrilling show for locally-based spectators every week you need home-track excitement. For which purpose Lee Complin ticks all the boxes.
  15. Glasgow roll into Shielfield Park on Saturday, September 29th. Come one, come all........... Return fixture is the following day at Ashfield -- although some out-dated sites are showing that Sunday being the Ashfield Classic. Be assured, the Bandits will be trying very hard to make both matches Classics!
  16. Unfortunate by-blow of Workington's apparent refusal to host Berwick this weekend. Aspegren presumably won't fly in to ride for Scunny if he hasn't got a Berwick meeting.
  17. Let's be positive! Let's look on it as two or three nights of speedway entertainment. Let's enjoy two or three 'bonus' evenings of watching racing in the company of our friends before five cold dark months without speedway.
  18. To close out season (and thus retain bond, share-out dividend and assets) Workington will have to stage two league meetings (Berwick and Leicester) two semi-finals and two play-off fixtures. Plus four away matches. That's six home meetings, plus the possibility of three more if they reach their three finals. But there only are six Saturdays left in the season. They seem to have painted themselves into a corner, and will require to run double-headers and (or) off-night fixtures to get through their season.
  19. Don't worry, in the 3,000 posts on here between now and Christmas, he'll get mentioned. Among twenty-five others. By the same half-dozen people.
  20. Is the threat to close right now, surrendering all the assets, rights to league share-out of big-event income and bond -- or to complete season and then close or sell the club and assets on? People criticise the BSPA, but they don't half get some problems thrust upon them! Here's the thing. Since they have not completed their PL programme with two home matches against Leicester and Berwick to be fitted in by this weekend, immediate closure would require ALL Workington results to be expunged from table. Would this change the standings? Indeed, would Ipswich find themselves "promoted" to play-offs?
  21. But --- if Plymouth win 49-41 (or better) they will guarantee lifting themselves off the bottom of the table and into the Young Shield (or whatever it's now called). Guaranteeing two more home fixtures, and with reported crowd levels at a more-than-profitable level, this is something the Devils' management will be gagging for. So it isn't all about Newcastle topping the table (which is just about bragging rights plus first and third choice of play-off opposition) and has the hallmark of a pretty intense tussle.
  22. Well sir, last night Kev Doolan was very much a Number One. He was also superb when he took Berwick for a full fifteen points at Redcar
