Greg Hancock How Good.?
stratton replied to stratton's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
But both at that stage and year were more than just as you say just PROMISING Nielsen/Gundersen.You must be in your own little world Collins for a period at Hyde Rd was nearly unbeatable i was not a fan i was a Lee supporter but Collins was great and exciting with it.Olsen also was a great, are you SAYING both of these blokes beat up on lesser riders total rubbish both were great riders you would have to be Stevie Wonder not to know that. I hope you have the right averages? where did you get them from? Yes and i see him score ?I think on an oversized engine for Wolves my memory is going it could of been 19 pts? at Swindon. -
( no order Briggs,Crump,Ashby,Adams,Autrey( i know one season only)Kilby Broadbanks ( reached alot of world finals loved swindon)White as reserve.

Michanek, Lovaas,Schwartz,Davis, Zagar, Jonsson, Hancock.

Good points, but you were totally wrong about Nielsen/Gundersen in 81,at that point they were more than just promising riders as i said Nielsen had been quietly fancied to ride well at Gothenburg Gundersen at Wembley( did he break the track record that year?) 'sommelier' Olsen who only won three titles was twice the rider of a modern day Pedersen better than Nielsen in my opinion and he was a great to.Olsen had everything a great style smooth, he was tough could gate and come from the back. And often underestimated was a great team man rider helped loads of young riders over the years.Out of the greats he only won three titles but he was better than that, he was one of the few who could beat a peak PC at Hyde Rd at his pomp and PC then was buzzing nearly unbeatable. -

You are right but have a look at our old BL that was the envy of the world at one time riders like Penhall as a example new they had to ride over here to be world class. The level then was very high, ok not as professional Mauger changed that but the league racing here was in a very healthy state talent wise.As a example Belle Vue one year had Mauger,Pusey,Sjosten,Collins, as a spine of the team now we are just an afterthought for most top riders.Going back to Nielsen/Gundersen most of us could see they were going to be great riders ,at that time Nielsen was even tipped up to go very well in 1980 in the Lee year. The GPS is an enjoyable event to watch, but some of those past greats would of won more titles in that format.Because for me to win a one off final was harder to do than win over a season. -

Your comment about Erik/Hans is a strange one at that time they were both learning there craft paying there dues also Nielsen at that time was picked by some to win a title so he at the time was more than just promising. Those two as examples would of found the Gps an easy experience now, semis most meeting's finalists regular a different pressure but an easier one in my opinion as a mistake in one round now is not terminal. -

The standard then was higher whatever you say,no doubt in my mind, and a rider like Schwartz now would have a field day in the EL.The GP series this year for example is missing at least three top class riders Emil,Laguta,Ward so this year is not the strongest like some of the one off finals. In my opinion Mauger,Briggs,Fundin would of won more titles in a GP format and looking at it NIelsen he could of won at least 8 world titles.?The one off final was harder to win in my opinion real pressure tough qualifying rounds and it took a different quality to win it so dont underestimate how tough it was. Pretty good, fifteen world championship title wins in amongst that lot. -

Are you serious? or is it a tongue in cheek comment.? -
He might but then we might be able to get a good replacement, i hope not i believe AM is a very good rider world class also he has a decent record on small tracks. At home i believe he could be really powerfull a great signing in my book his home average will be high plus he can ride the little tracks as well.

Yes you are right Crump we all felt can he win it can he get over the winning line?.I still maintain Crump was the better rider, also others who know better than me Ricko had luck with the gates (ect) the rules in the GP then were different to now alot different.Ricko was not a rider i took too brilliant of course so i am bias,Crump and Gollob in his era for me were as good as him.Do you judge riders by titles i don't, Rickardsson has six titles but i would put Crump/ Gollob on his level and if you judged him against Briggs,Fundin,Mauger,he does well to get in the top six. -

Olsen certainly would be higher and no disrespect Tony is no way number two in my book he would be in a top six and i know he won six titles but i would put Crump/ Gollob on his level as well. -

You now have become a joke take a deep breath eh,!!why would you even mention your two daughters laughable really.I will read your posts and have a laugh but why respond you are a bitter and twisted bloke sad really.
-
That side looks unbeatable to be honest, and you could of picked another ten riders who would of done a great job as well.!

Never really enjoyed the racing at Cowley ER,was always great to go there though in local derbies great atmosphere the three team tournaments were great.Often a 11.olock start with another fixture at 7.30 great days really.I went regular to Oxford for about three years when Nielsen really was the business, was never a fan but i changed my mind about him his record overall is embarrassing so good.

One thing from this thread that really strikes home to me is Rick,Crump,Gollob were all capable of dominating an era.Crump was unlucky he should of won more titles and with Gollob's mega talent he should of as well. Those three names were one of the reasons that i often overlooked Greg, but his longevity is impressive and he has every chance of winning another title. -
Greg Hancock for me was never one of my favourite riders, he was good and progressed to being a great rider and i admired him but i often overlooked him.I see him ride quite alot a terrific rider but what stuck out for me was his personality great with the fans have a chat autographs (ect) GENIUNE which was great. This year again at an advanced age he can win a fourth title amazing really, Autrey was my favourite American followed by Sigalos but Hancock now is the man a real nice man great rider.I wondered what others think ?and now he has to be high up in the list of great riders of our sport must be in the top 15 ever.?
-
Why would you p..s your pants funny if he got a ban? is speedway an entertainment do you not want to see the best?.I agree if he messes up again of course then it could be terminal, but British speedway can ill afford to just toss him aside. If Darcy had rode for another club rather than Poole i think the bitterness from SOME would be less. And there are lots who support him even on this forum who want him to turn it around i do more for Speedway more than anything else because he is a terrific rider and when racing is an asset to the sport.
-
He was found NOT guilty on the sexual assault and gee he did a bit of Cannabis (splif) that crime is less hurtfull than CHEATING on somebody don't you think.?
-
I actually think now your reasoning has become embarrassing,we all know your view most people i know are willing to forgive and move on.And you cheating on somebody to me is as bad as some of of Ward's mistakes or do you think that mistake is the Norm.?
-
Good point spot on,i can remember before he got his entry again into the series and become champ some people on here crucified him bigtime.
-
You sit there and become judge and jury yet you don't even know the bloke from Adam, and i presume you have never made a MISTAKE ever in your life.? Most people i speak to are willing to move on,odviously he has to be punished but there are certain people on here who will not let thing's go.Move on if he messes up again of course he has to face the music lets get real here he has not murdered anybody. I will never learn to bow down to a bigot like you,and i believe there is a good in most people and i will give the benefit of the doubt you never will do that but what's new eh.!

Do you know him personally 'orion ? a big NO a stupid comment.
