  1. Who are we actuslly tslking sbout here?Hancock and holder don't fit. Last year everyone said kk is not a true number 1. Nicki has a dislocated collarbone. Who are the other number 1s we think this shows dont want to race here?
  2. In 81 and 82 carter was better than all those you named (except penhall obviously). The danes overtook him in 83 and went on to dominate. Lee was clearly vastly more talented than carter. Carter was better than sigalos 81-83, but sigalos started 84 on fire, before both had thir seasons curtailed - siggy was some talent, and could well have become world champ - but on the seasons they raced I think carter would have finished ahesd every year. S moran I rate neck and neck with carter, in 84 he would have challrnged the danes in a gp series, as would both he and kenny in 85. Sanders had a couple of very good years 79/80 and agsin 83/84. But though all the above riders were 5 plus years younger, I would argue they were all riding at a better level than billy.
  3. Would mean dropping magic or pawlicki for a three pointer, so would make no sense. Would mean dropping magic or pawlicki for a three pointer, so would make no sense.
  4. The same question, correctly phrased, has been asked at least four times on this thread without response.
  5. Not sure you can accuse carter of lacking consistency. Look at 82. Donestically averaged over 11, and won blrc. He finished on the podium in all four meetings qualifying for the world final. He was top point scorer in tests fir England agsinst both usa and denmark. Scored a max in the wtc inter continental final. He was the most consistent rider in the world that year.
  6. And tbf to ford here, if people quoted fully what he said, he made specific reference to the fact that because of the delay with the decision, he would be unable to replace him as the deadline had passed. Not sure what people want him to say, obviously he diesnt want ward banned. Im sure the aces fans and management didnt complain when shaun moran colped an alcohol related ban from fim events only (I.e. was still allowed to ride british league). Or again the following year when he failed a drugs test due to psinkillers. I detest fords cheating as much as anyone, but in this instance I think he is just stating what any manager would be thinking. Possible, but as skidder mentioned there has been no rrcent activity on his offial page . And its a pretty innocuous comment anyway?
  7. I tried about four of the darcy ward fscebook pages and couldn't find any quote of the sort either
  8. Your claim I take it would be against the latvian promoters, not bsi, as I dont think you entered into s contract with bsi? And would presumably therefore be governed by latvian law, and therefore there may be no equivalent if small claims court and you may need to travel to latvia if it went to court?
  9. Carter would have been in with a real chance in a gp series in 82, arguably 85 as well, and a medalist in 81 (if he was in the series). In 83 he would have arguably had about the same chance of sanders for a medal. I can't think of any year where you could argue sanders was likely to have taken the crown, though appreciate he still could have had another 5 years at the top. For me though, I'd rate him just behind carter, sigalos, s moran, knudsen and jessup - very good riders of that era who didn't win a title.
  10. You obviously saw him more than I did, but in all competitions his results were worse in 84 than 83. Clearly started 85 on fire, but rode only a handful of meetings. Personally I think he was better suited to world finsls, where he generally lifted himself, rather than gps. All conjecture and opinion, but personally I think there were better riders in the same era who also failed to win the title.
  11. Surely the terms and conditions on the ticket will limit liability of the promoter to the value of the ticket? Unless that breaches the latvian equivalent of consumer rights. I imagine the only likely outcome will be a legal bill, and feedback that you have no legal right to reimbursement/damages. Agree with sir h though, that everyone out of pocket shouls submit an invoice to bsi, though dont expect payment!
  12. Its not intended to disrespect kelly in the slightest, he and shawn are amongst my favourite riders ever. But given that the above allegation appeared in print, during kelly's lifetime, I'm not sure why you consider it offensive or in need of moderation? Agree, RIP jellyman.
  13. Kind of proves my point if that's all that springs to mind. 84 was probably his big chance - he was riding better in 83 but not sure any rider could have beaten egon thst afternoon. As it is not sure he did anything to convince me he could have broken the Danish dominance - wheras penhall, sigalos, lee and carter were all capable of having done so if not for the premature ends to their careers.
  14. Autrey would have been a contender in 78/79, if not for his ban - still dont think hecwould have won it.Jansson - who knows what he could have achieved Tatum - very good rider, but a notch below the kikes of carter and jessup who didnt win it either - not genuine workd champ material in my view Louis - similar to tatum, not quite goid enough imho, and due to his late start wasnt near the top for as long Crump - a real contender in a gp system only in 75 with his 4-valve, otherwise a notch below the top level, and had a pretty disappointing world final record. All very good riders, but none true world champion matetial in my view I dont tbh. He had an excellent world final record, without ever looking like winning a final. Under a gp system his best chance would have been 83, but I still dont think he would have made the podium. cant think of any major individual meeting that he won?
  15. Looks at yhis stage like ward will ride?Nicki dislocated his collarbone but is hoping to ride Hampel also got injured but haven't seen an update Suspect only after practice will the line up be known
  16. Similar thing hhappened with kelly moran when he was at eastborne. He was allegedly so drunk he could barely stand, the opposition complained it wad unsafe, but bob dugard's doctor passed him fit to race. He didnt make it round the first bend in any of his rides
  17. He admitted to having drink the night before and fsiling the test. That's not necessarily a confession of actually being over the limit if there was something wrong with the tesr.Doesnt darcy (allegedly) like to take videos when he drinks, maybe there is some footage on his phone that might prove how much he did/didn't drink?
  18. I think hans would have beaten jan o, just as jan o beat gundersen in 88 which gave hans a run off with eric. And id have backed tommy to win the run off. All speculation though... Jan o would have been top two for sure (imho) in 91, though I still reckon hans would hsve pipped him for the title. Would havvy even have been in a gp series in 92 - would probably have needed a wild card, perhsps to join tatum as only brits.Assuming he was, I still think jonsson would have won, with two from havelock ermolenko and Nielsen joining him on the podium (I'll go with that order)
  19. Anyone have links to watch this meeting? Found only the final and crashes on YouTube
  20. What are the issues? Did ward have a blood test or only breath tests, and if the latter is that grounds to appeal any ban (I know in nz, for a drink drive offence a blood test is required, and breath test only sufficient if the offender refuses the blood test)? I also note that it sppears shawn moran failed an alcohol test at an fim longtrack event in 89, and copped a ban from FIM events only for the rest of that season (still rode bl).
  21. a while back I devised a ranking system, which rated riders on performances across World Championship qualifiers, World Final, British League, Internationals (all 22.5%) and BLRC (10%). For the years 1979-1989, the top three were: 1979: 1 Lee 2 Olsen 3 Mauger 1980 1 Jessup 2 Penhall 3 Lee 1918 1 Penhall 2 Carter 3 Knudsen 1982 1 Penhall 2 Carter 3Sigalos 1983 1 Nielsen 2 Gundersen 3 Lee 1984 1 Nielsen 2 Gundersen 3 King 1985 1 Gundersen 2 Nielsen 3 S Moran 1986 1 Nielsen 2 Gundersen 3 Jan o Pedersen 1987 1 Nielsen 2 Gundersen 3 Ermolenko 1988 1 Nielsen 2 Jan O Pedersen 3 Gundersen 1989 1 Nielsen 2 Gundersen 3 S Moran In terms of how that compares with who I think would have won GPS. 1979 – as per above 1980 – as per above, though possibly Lee to pip Penhall for 2nd 1981 – Penhall by a mile. Not certain that Carter would have been part of the 81 GPs, so I’ll plump for Jessup as runner-up (but for his two engine failures at wembley he would have finished 3rd in the rankings instead of 7th). 3rd spot could have gone to Knudsen or Gundersen(4th in rankings), but at best one of them would have been wildcarded in the series – so I’ll plump for Olsen to take 3rd, the last GP medal for the “old brigade” from the 70s 1982: As per above, assuming Siggy was given a wildcard, otherwise Hans to take 3rd. 1983: Per above, possibly Lee to finish ahead of Eric in 2nd 1984: I’ll go Erik ahead of Hans (his ranking was pulled down by his BL tape sexclusions), and Shawn Moran (4th) to finish in third 1985: Per above 1986: Per above, except I’d go Knudsen (4th) to take third ahead of Jan O 1987: Per above 1988: Hans to win, I’d say Erik to be 2nd ahead of Jan O 1989: Nielsen to win. Erik despite his injury may have had enough of a buffer to hold onto a medal spot especially with Shawn Moran’s FIM ban for failing an alcohol test ruling him out and Jan o and Sam both injured. I’ll go Tatum to pick up third spot.
  22. Disagree, i'd rank him well ahead of all of those. 3rd in the world on debut at 19, three injury plagued years, 5th in 85 then could have been world champ in 86 if the ref had ruled differently. bombed out of quslifying in 87/88.I'd have him in the same category as carter and sigalos, though a touch below both of then.
  23. Where are you finding all these british riders?
  24. initially no, as in the early 80s he wasnt as good round hyde rd as gundersen carter penhall s moran. But he was world class 83 onwards and peaked around 86. So he never met penhall or lee when he was at his best. Put penhall lee gundersen and nielsen in a one off race at their peak and I would bsck any of the other s. Put them in a gp series and I would pick hans, possibly against any rider in history. In terms of "all time greatness" hans would undoubtedly rate above any other riders from the 80s in my view.
