  1. An interesting post. Certainly the sport was in the doldrums in 1958, but one big difference then and now was that in 1958 there were many stadia ready and waiting for speedway to be staged there. Hence, it was relatively easy matter to re-open 10 tracks when the Provincial League started and even Division 2 in 1968 saw a number ot tracks re-open. Where today are the stadia that could easily stage speedway? A much smaller number, I think
  2. Peter Oakes running a piece in the Star saying that the 'new' track might be Brafield.
  3. I saw a lot of Gordon at White City, where he was a real star. Someone earlier mentioned seeing him riding long-track style at Belle Vue and he cetainly did that at Wood Lane. One of the main men in the league, but I felt rather under-rated at the time. He was formidable again whenhe dropped down at Eastbourne and there were some great battles between the Dons and the Eagles.
  4. Think Belle Vue might have been one of the first, sponsored by the Piccadilly Gold radio station.
  5. Just finished reading this book. Very enjoyable and highly recommended. It certainly doesn't pull any punches where Mike Parker is concerned.
  6. Details of the meeting here; http://www.internationalspeedway.co.uk/engvsu.htm
  7. Found this on You Tube, very interesting!
  8. Looking at the Championship team line ups it seems there is almost a de facto Rising Star scheme because of the reduction of the team limit. There are a lot of young/inexperienced reserve riders in the league. Will be interested to see how they get on. Of course, if they do well they will effectively ride themselves out of a team place for next year....
  9. No Torbjorn Harryson? Remember seeing him scoring a 15 point maximum at Belle Vue in 1967 and was the only rider to beat Ove Fundin that night. He only rode two seasons in Britain but was regarded as perhaps the next big thing until he broke his leg in the 1969 Worlf Final and never got over the injury.
  10. I seem to recall reading that Len Silver objected to Harringay re-opening as it would eat into his crowd at Hackney.
  11. I seem to recall that the Weymouth promoter who is involved alienated his landlord at Weymouth and various other people too.
  12. Mine have all been arriving on time recently. Some very good articles, too. One on Mike Parker was very interesting, as is this weeks analysis of the Weston-Super-Mare fiasco.
  13. Some stuff about them here http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Thames/Thames.htm
  14. Apparently they 'boasted' the lowest ever Football League attendance.
  15. Got both the last two issues today here in North East Derbyshire.
  16. Did he not have Martin Dugard in his camp at one time? He's obviously got a bit of expertise at his disposal but it's still up to him to put the advice into practice.
  17. Tatum did say in commentary that Nicholls had had a puncture in his last ride.
  18. Louis suggested on TV that contributory factors to the Sheffield debacle had been the earlier start time and warmer conditions. Make of that what you will. He also said that Anlas had sent over some new tyres with, presumably, a different compound and a technician to look at the problem. There didn't seem anything untoward last night, but I fast forward through the interviews so don't know if there were any comments.
  19. But Brennan rides at 2 for the Aces, so is in Heat 8 anyway. Out of curiosity, if the rising star moves into the 1-5 does he have to ride at 2 becaue that's a protected heat?
  20. I never saw Peter Craven ride, but pictures of him suggest a pretty modern style, he certainly looks differnet in pictures from most of his contemporaries. Soren Sjosten had a similar style. I see to recall him being referred to as a 'balance rider'. Maybe it was because they were both of small stature and bigger riders would find it hard to adopt such a style?
  21. My recollection was that in the stadium you could only hear the commentary on the last lap, whereas on the You Tube videos you can hear him throughout the race. What he was able to do was use the commentary to gee up the crowd if the Dons had pulled off a good race win and he was one part of an excellent promotion team. Mike Bennet was excellent when he was at Wimbledon, too.
  22. 1960, Liverpool v Shefield Bruce, Dodd, Skyner, Robinson (ns) 95.8 Can't remember it at all, but it may well have been the slowest race I've ever seen.
