When Did Uk Speedway Decline Start?
The White Knight replied to a topic in Speedway News and Discussions
It is a good Thread this. I have learned a lot (again) from it. I think it is fair to say that Speedway today is a totally different thing to what it was back in the '60s and 70s. I honestly believe that your Riders rode for your Club Season after Season and actually talked to and socialised with the Supporters. Many on here could say things similar to this - at Sunderland in the 70s we had Russ Dent, George Barclay, Dave Gatenby, Brian Havelock, Jack Millen etc. who we actually got to know as people. That simply doesn't happen nowadays and, I believe Speedway suffers because of it. That and ever increasing Rule changes that make the Sport lack credibility - Double Uppers/Downers, Double Points etc.. I also agree about the Silencers - the noise and the strong smell of the Castrol 'R' were a big part of Speedway too - the Sport has suffered with their loss as well. Sadly I don't, at present, see any end to the decline - I just wish that Speedway could go back to the way it used to be - but - I am not holding my breath. I stopped going because of one stupid Rule - I wonder how many others have stopped for the same reason, or how many others have stopped because of one particular reason/Rule that they can't abide. There must be many of them. -
Thank you for that ff. I am grateful.

Perhaps I just can't remember. It happens you know. I only wanted to know if Tai had made an Official Announcement. So far all I hear about is Twitter - I am not on Twitter. So I respectfully ask again - has an Official Announcement been made by Press Release or whatever on Tai finishing with Great Britain World Cup Team or alternatively has anything Official been put out on this subject by the Great Britain Team Management?

Happy Christmas to you to from: The British Speedway Promoters Association.

.................... but what happened in the Vote? You know - that Vote we were all requested to take part in.
-
I take it you don't understand the word emphasis.
-
So - another 'Cock Up' by the looks of things. Oh dear......................
-
Thank you ff.

Has Tai made a Statement or something. This, on here, is the first I have heard of him quitting Great Britain.

Any Result yet?

Best wishes Bryn - get well soon. All the best. Many, many apologies for getting the name wrong Bryn, I have corrected it. I don't know what I was thinking about when I was typing. It was pointed out to me and I have put it right as soon as I could. I was horrified. Once again - I am really sorry. Ian.

That'll be Dave then?

I couldn't agree more. -
I did it for them - on my ZX-Spectrum.

This really is a cracking Thread. I am enjoying reading it immensely. Great to see folk who really know their subject discussing things iin a civilised manner. My respect to all of you for your knowledge which on this subject, if I am totally honest, is far superior to mine.

I too would like to wish all Members of this Forum, all of those whom I have crossed swords with in the past, and those with whom I have had some really enjoyable discussion and banter a very HAPPY CHRISTMAS and a very PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR. Let's hope that everyone's ambitions are fulfilled in 2017. Good luck to British Speedway too - I hope that it has a successful year.

You didn't. Sorry if I upset you with my views - that was not my intention hence the smiley.

That can only be an opinion and not a fact. Exactly the same with my argument - it is only my opinion. I believe that I read the Magazine enough to make a judgement for my own benefit. I am aware and accept that not everyone agrees with me. That is fine by me.
-
Actually that is odd because I much prefer it in the winter. There are some decent articles by John Chaplin that are usually worth a read, about the old days.
-
........... and much better Journalism than it has today. Pick up a copy of Speedway Star in the fifties, sixties or seventies and it was a very good read indeed. The Magazine is far more flashy nowadays but nowhere near the same standard of content that the old ones used to contain. Not that it really matters what I think. I do, however, wish Speedway Star well. I will continue to purchase it on an ad hoc basis.

A superb bit of scholarship BL65. That must have taken some compiling and working out. Very good Post and WELL DONE. :approve:

I agree that you have some good arguments in favour of the current System iris123. I just thought that the Qualifying Rounds and the 'One Off' World Final were far more exciting. As Speedway is in the Entertainment Business I think that excitement is what it should all be about. I did, however, long ago give up on expecting the Sport to change back. There is far too much money involved these days and that, crucially, is what is cutting the throat of British Speedway.
-
That has been my contention for years now. There is no incisive, investigative or thrusting journalism in the Magazine any longer. I used to really look forward to my 'Speedway Star' for many years - I got it every week. I rarely bother now as, to me anyway, it just toes the party line and appears to want to avoid upsetting anyone. It certainly is not the same 'Speedway Star' that I enjoyed so much all those years ago, along with the 'Speedway Mail', 'Speedway Express' etc.. Such is progress I suppose.

................. and the Grand Prix System isn't?
