Thank you for Posting this britmet. A very worthwhile and interesting read. A fitting tribute to a great Rider. :approve:

A great Rider back in the day. I've always understood it was Yan-carts. I stand to be corrected though.

British Speedway As A Brand....
The White Knight replied to CookieIpswich's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Fair cop whka1. You will note though that I did state that I hated them and I could only live with them if I had to. (Tactical Substitutes, not Tactical Rides). My main contention, as you know, is that I want no contrivances at all in Speedway. Just because it has 'always been like this' is not a good enough reason for continuing with it if it is palpably wrong. People say that Speedway needs to change to bring back the Crowds - well why not give this a try. It can hardly make things worse and may actually help a little. Actually, it would help a little. I would come back and pay my money each week for a start. I am not claiming that getting rid of contrivances like this will solve Speedway's problems, it won't, but as I say - it might just help a little. -
Do I take that to mean that he was British gustix?

Problem is that Councils, in my exeperience, are very slow in everything they do. Hopefully it will not stop Belle Vue going to the Tapes in 2017. -
British Speedway - Dead Or Alive?

Do you ever actually read your Posts before Posting them? If you did you may Post something that folk can understand. Regarding the highlighted part of your Post - obviously wkha1 didn't or he would not have Posted as he did. -

British Speedway - Dead Or Alive?
The White Knight replied to SarahLapworth's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Aaaahhhhh yes - the usual mantra. What does knowing the Rules beforehand have to do with Sportsmanship or Fair Play? Answer - absolutely nothing. Fair Play and Sportsmanship is the way, the spirit in which the Game is played/run. Perhaps once you understand that you will cease from trotting out the same tired and hackneyed old mantra again and again. Unless, of course, you condone the League Champions not being the League Champions. To me that is neither Sporting nor Fair Play. For goodness sake read my Posts - I have never, ever Posted that. If you are going to pull me up for something at least make sure of your facts. I defy you to find anywhere I have said that. I have said that I would prefer Speedway without either the Tactical Ride or the Tactical Substitute. I would get rid of both as I have constantly said. To your final point - it doesn't make it right though - no matter how many Sports do it. -

True - but even if they did - would they get all of their investment back? I don't know. -
I was actually talking about the 50's, 60's and 70's. You could try watching a few DVDs from that era - if you have any.

British Speedway - Dead Or Alive?

Probably because we were taught about Sportsmanship and Fair Play from a young age. Something, I am sad to say, that is lacking in Sport these days. -

The counter argument to that being that all the changes instigated since those days have hardly brought a rosy future to Speedway - have they? One might ask oneself might things have been better had they left things well alone? Change for changes sake rarely works, and it is my belief has actually made Speedway a less viable proposition than it used to be. -

Fair point well made. The only thing I can see wrong with that is the Council would be left with a white elephant of a Stadium that would be largely unused. Surely that would be no good for either side. -
Would that make it easier to cook the books?

I admit that you could be right about that. I just don't think you are. -

There may be a feeling................. .................................... but it doesn't feel that way to me, and, I suspect a lot of others. -

And have the Magazine facing Legal Action against them? Great idea that. It might bankrupt Speedway Star Speedway's only Official Journal - not very clever that Humphrey - unless you would care to pay for any Legal Bills or Fines incurred? -

................ and if the price is the Sport's Credibility? As Vincent Blackshadow has pointed out - how many people stopped going due to the irrelevance of Meetings later in the Season, or got tired of the whole idea of the various League Championship Meetings being totally irrelevant, for that is what they are - totally irrelevant. Far better Bill them as a Cup Competition. That would, at least, be more honest. That very statement re-enforces my view that Double Points and Tactical Substitutes are just contrivances. Do away with them and you will get more Home wins, and, Home Promoters, Riders and Supporters go home happy. More importantly, the Supporters will come back the following week to follow a winning Team. There will still be Away wins - but not as many. This would be much fairer for both Home and Away Supporters. It might also encourage wavering Supporters to stay with the Sport. -
............ and was much the better because of that. The Promoters and Riders have let all that go sadly. No the wonder only the diehards are left - I would still be going were it not for the Double Points Rule. To sum up - some of the Races are still very good, but overall, those who run Speedway, to my mind, have made many very bad ecisions over the years. Speedway nowadays is not the same as the Sport I loved (and to a point, still do) all those years ago. Lots more people went in those days - so they must have been doing something right. Then they change everything in order to progress the Sport - and we can all see the results of that - can't we?
-
I'm very pleased about that. Can you imagine going to the Speedway - no noise, no smell of Castrol 'R' (you can hardly get a whiff of that these days). If they go to Electric Bikes - whatever it is - it won't be Speedway.
