I couldn't give a toss about the PC (not Peter Collins by the way) Brigade - never have. A useless bunch of do gooders who have nothing better to do than cause trouble for others - and they usually make any given situation worse than it should be.

We, at Sunderland, were told by the Bridgett, Parker Promoters back in 1964 that poor weather and poor crowds were the reason for closure. None of the nine Meetings they ran before closing down was rained off, and the crowd at the penultimate Meeting was 8,500 (Source: Sunderland Echo). A perfectly good Dog Track at Sunderland that has staged Speedway twice before is still very much in existence. I doubt we will ever see Speedway again at that venue though. I know I'm a bit out on your time frame - but one lives in hope.

I can't agree with that. Phil Crump, Peter Collins, Gordon Kennett are just three off the top of my head who, in my opinion were superior Riders to Jackson and Owen.

There were some cracking Riders in the National League in those days. Graeme Smith, Lou Sansom, Tom Owen, Trevor Geer, Ken McKinlay, Arthur Browning, George Major, Bruce Forrester, Doug Templeton, Geoff Maloney = all were good to watch along with the others I've mentioned on this Thread. Many happy memories here.

Yoou were right on what I mean't iris but there is a distinct dearth of film from those days. I still think I would rather have watched Speedway in the Forties and Fifties as compared to now. I don't know, of course, but reading about it and watching some clips on youtube I just get the feeling.

You are right Sid - Crewe had a great side in those days and Dai was the Captain. I loved watching Crump (Phil) - he was a truly great Rider.
