Capacity Of Uk Speedway Stadiums
The White Knight replied to mickthemuppet's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
I would suggest that the only other place to hold a GP other than Cardiff is the National Speedway Stadium. I believe that Cardiff is undoubtedly the best Venue. If, however, Great Britain were to get another Grand Prix then, to me, the only option would be Manchester. I know the Crowds would be nowhere near Cardiff but as far as I am concerned it is the only real alternative. -
He did indeed. 1971 to 1974. He is a 'Gentleman' in the truest sense of the word. http://sunderlandspeedway.co.uk/profiles/George_Barclay.html

Buster Chapman - Is He Good For The Sport?

I couldn't agree more. -
True - but I did get my plug in for Sunderland didn't I?
-
I just mentioned Wimbledon because we are on the Wimbledon Thread. Really I was expressing my view regarding somewhere like Sunderland. The Stadium where Speedway took place at Sunderland in 1964, and from 1971 to 1974, is still there, still a fair distance from Housing and has been much improved over the intervening years. That is why I think that keeping the name out there is important.

Yes gustix - it was Sunderland that I was referring to in that comment.

From reading comments on this Thread - the answer must be Yes. 100% -
Keeping the name in the Speedway arena is useful in that Promoters, who may be looking for new venues, may be tempted to give said Track another go. If they are not aware of somewhere, or it's History, then they may not even consider Sunderland, Wimbledon or anywhere else. It also demonstrates that there are folk in said area who already know about Speedway - even after a gap of over forty years. It is probably a forlorn hope I know, but still worth doing.

Nothing wrong with nostalgia. Apart from anything else it is good to to keep the names of some of the defunct Track names in the public eye. We can always hope that Speedway may return one day to our local Track. EDIT: Oops! I forgot to mention my Track is Sunderland.

THAT is their decision, though I do think your percentage of those leaving to be far too high. I never left before the end of the Second Half as I saw some superb Racing at times. I know that Second Half Final results were not always kocher but some of the displays put on by the Riders were fantastic.

This is a genuine question because I really don't know. What does GoSpeed International actually do for Speedway? I don't want to cause any bother, but I would like to know. -
So you prefer TWO Heats - to an extra FOUR in a Second Half. It's only two Heats off the main Meeting so what's the problem. Second Halves could be great, as well as beneficial to Speedway by giving youngsters the opportunity for more Track time and the experience of riding in front of the public. Happiness is 40-38.

No - he is not a 'fence sitter' as you put it. He needs to be able to carry the rest of the BSPA with him though. Given that he expressed a wish some time back to get rid of Double Points - it would seem that in, at least, some cases that the BSPA are not prepared to back him. He can only bring improvements to the Sport with the support of his fellow Promoters. Will he get that? I have to say that I have my doubts. I certainly hope that he does get that support. We can only wait and see. -
I would like to add Greg Hancock to the name of Freddie Lindgren. You do not hear of him falling much either. My views on current Bikes are well known - they are too bloody dangerous.

I can remember Jack Millen riding with a broken Collar Bone, and at another time with his leg in plaster, his boot cut open to accommodate the plaster. It wouldn't be allowed nowadays I suspect with Health and Safety the way it is - and actually that is probably a good thing.

I think it is good that the Club has shown some loyalty to Busch. Loyalty is a rare commodity these days. Actually, once again, I am impressed with the Promotion at Redcar.
