Great speedway meeting -
A true gentleman and a Newport wasps legend as a rider and manager. I was at the World Cup final at Peterborough, spotted him walking past me said hi and asked him to sign my programme. He recginised me from a few away matches with the wasps and said I'll get the lads to sign it for you asked me to follow him to the pits and he duly did reappear with a programme signed with all the Aussies riding and a few helping out. I'm sure Bill is showing somebody how to gate properly somewhere. RIP

If Hancock was really interested in bringing on the kids he would be in the pits offering advice, passing on his experience I would have thought . -

Didn't these two also rans qualify ahead of Germany? -
I didn't have any problem with BTs coverage , but then I tend to like their other sports coverage compared to sky's shout & hype coverage. If nite & kelv could just tone down the commentating a touch I be quite happy though, The problems were the state of the track for me.

Totally agree I grew up watching speedway when it was a "sport & entertainment" now it is a "Sport" and tries to be like to be super professional I know which I prefer the one with characters, grudges, winding up, etc Re political correctness etc it is people at causes this to happen with complaints, claims etc if people didn't respond & be offended and expect compension etc by the whatver etc it would be much looser -

Belle Vue Memories How Good Was Hyde Rd.?
longlivefrankie replied to stratton's topic in Years Gone By
First visit 1972 BLRC , was mesmerised , as quite a few mentioned the funfair, zoo and the almost gladiatorial atmosphere under the lights made it my no 1 fav track, annual visits to the BLRC were a real treat Only two other tracks for atmosphere came close ...Wimbledon for the internationale and other big meeting although loved league meetings there (uncle was living in London at time so frequent visits) and then Wembley for the world finals 72, 75, 78 -

Somerton park - deafening roar stood in stand if u brave enough on first bend later on after start line moved sides Also this weekend got me thinking Exeter ...how things change the Chiefs & city both in playoff finals made me miss our old sparring partners the Falcons. Hayley stadium , baking hot sunday afternoons -
I'm sure all Newport speedway fans will feel the same as me, a cornerstone of the wasps during both their existences as manager then announcer and journalist RIP Bob , best announcer for me ever, gone not forgotten

Apologies if I spelt a word wrong in the title. Someone has pointed it out in a PM to me as it has taken this long I'm not worrying about it

Bbc Recordings Of The Internationale At Wimbledon
longlivefrankie replied to billybikespeedway's topic in Years Gone By
Some of my best speedway memories are the internationale on whit Monday at Wimbledon & BLRC at Belle Vue in October during late sixties through to late seventies. Seemed along with Wembley world finals something special The stand lights going out before the race starts, the day spent at the amusement park at the zoo, Very strong memories of why I fell,in love with speedway -
Reading another thread started me thinking about tracks race nights from sixties & seventies Here's the ones I think remember - correct me if I'm wrong & add others if so desired Monday ...... Reading, Exeter, Newcastle Tuesday...... Leicester, West Ham Wednesday. Poole, Hull Thursday.... Wimbledon, Sheffield, Oxford Friday......... Hackney, Newport, Wolverhampton, Edinburgh Saturday..... Cradley Heath, Belle Vue, Coventry, Swindon, Glasgow

i have vague recollections of Wilkie coming on the mic for kocup quarter final ( I think) visit of belle vue saying the Aces had no problem with Somerton park or something similar . The number of riders who did of course would make a decent team up though
-
Even by today's speedways standards Somerton park would be a decent stadium, plenty of covered stands on three sides no less Some great memories - test matches, Phil crumps first season, the years 1965, 1975, Toby harrysson, gote Nordin, reidar eide, Sandor Levai and many more etc
