  1. That would be after Michael Max I suppose ? Barry is one of only 4 announcers to be the voice at Newcastle Speedway, an earlier one was Maurice Morley.
  2. Exactly the reason why wearing Diamonds gear sticks in ya crop. It's like he is mocking the fans and has no sympathy for the loyal fans.
  3. Not entitled to wear it now and also not entitled to expect free admission and programme. Interestingly, looking through things a few weeks ago I found all of Robs Rider Contacts from 2000 to 2003. He certainly covered all bases with Sponsorship, Guaranteed rates with free oil, tyre and fuel (Home and Away), free hotels for him and mechanic at away meetings, and increased travel allowance. We didn't do such comprehensive contracts like that for the top riders so I guess Darryl had a soft spot for him. Nevermind, we got a better than expected transfer fee when we sold him to Berwick so we didn't lose on him. Good riddance. Interesting now talking about dogs staff cutting wires to allegedly cut the grass. Every Sunday morning we had to go around and repair the fence fastenings, repair cut fence tensioning wires, gear moved around so we couldn't find them, and the varied vandalism which was our usual Sunday early jobs to do before the jobs we went for to get ready for the training school or the evening meetings. Rob was part of the dogs staff then. Don't ask about the fence and posts, that were mowed down by a tractor after the previous Saturday dogs meeting. Life with any of the Dogs staff was never anything pleasant and helpful, all spurred on by their Stadium racing manager who used to countenance anything that would annoy us in the hope they got rid of speedway from Brough. They will be happy now.
  4. I believe that the stadium owners instructed Grant to remove the fence on the home straight. Dogs track staff had cut the bottom portion of the fence netting in order to cut the grass that was growing under it. This caused the decision from the stadium owners who then wanted to remove it completely, and made Grant make plans to make a portable fence. This fence was in sections interlocking, and needed to be put up before every speedway meeting. Just another job for the dwindling track staff to do. I am led to believe that Grant obtained the sections from Coventry Speedway.
  5. Yes. Having the catering rights, and his own catering business, helped Grant's income stream that no other previous promotion had. The fact it was so successful in the his early days with home and away fans, obviously cushioned the low income from low numbers of attendees. Eventually less attendees and less fans attending and using his catering, made it even less viable. Other previous promotions had to allow the stadium to take the catering profits, but still continued to give a decent team over most years.
  6. Archies contract was taken over by the BSPL, as per the procedures, and Redcar signed him. George is now a regular visiter to Redcar Speedway I believe.
  7. Wrong type of fence, The Northside fence is wire fastened to upright light metal poles which is suitable for speedway, especially on the bends with the air fence cushioning the impact of a rider and bike. Stock tracks need a sturdier type of fence using Armco, which is bolted to upright metal spikes, cemented into the base. Same as motorway barriers. Scunny has that type of fence embedded into the bank at the back. For the stocks, the deflated airfence is slung over to be behind the Armco, to save damage.
  8. Problem is he can't stop on the bike. Drops the bike too easy, and when on full bore seems to take fright and hits the fence. He's probably lost more points than he has scored. Could be a decent rider if he just calmed down a bit and tried more to stop on.
  9. Rob's family farms are to the west of Newcastle. Rob's grandfather was called Farmer Grant for a reason.
  10. The" stuff " that was the produce of the whole families farms at the West side of Newcastle.
  11. Did Dave and Steve put money into the promotion or were they just appointed Promoters to allow Rob to take a step back ?
  12. It was 2 Yanks that fought to take more money out of the windfall TV deal and the rest followed.
  13. Yes but because of his own ineptness. Any previous promoters/promotion have played no part in this closure, just his lack of man management and inability to do the right thing at the right time. It is fair to say he is the worst promoter ever at Newcastle. Sad day given the great effort in 1997 to resurrect the sport by me, George and Peter.
  14. Yes he rode very well for us, always tried his best.
  15. The curator in question is one if the best in the county.Long time (30 years)curator of Sheffield and Scunny, count in several GP's at Cardiff and was one of the 'clowns' you call them that put the track right a couple of weeks ago.
  16. I see Jack riding for BV Colts, being with Archie Freeman, and he is loads better than the comments about him. Hard rider, good gater and not frightened to mix it. Really pleased for him to get another chance and I hope he takes it.
  17. That is the usual actions, but it depends who is missing.
  18. The Police Motor Shows in Durham are just as big and we used to do them regular. Also the Tyneside musical festival in Heaton Park. And they weren't anywhere near the smallness of Welldfield shows either.
  19. Agree. I remember it being said for no worries when it was sold, as they knew who he was and he was a friend of Speedway.
  20. A group of us (including Steve Brock) have been doing shows, schools, festivals, etc, for over a decade with videos and three bikes from different eras, advertising Newcastle Speedway to everyone. Where have you been ?
  21. I take it you won't be picking up the bill for the travel and track medical staff, etc, if it was called off. Not to the mention of home/travelling fans wasting time and money to get to a non event.
  22. Once again I need to tell you it was not a shoddy job. If it was how come it has lasted over 20 years of annual racing, and has only now appeared due to the lack on shale on the 1st/2nd bends.
