  1. Local riders also included: Mick Hines, Trevor Jones, Ted Howgego, Dave Gooderham, Kevin Jolly, Andy Hines, Colin Cook, Nigel Flatman and Ben Howe. I don't think many (if any) other teams can match that sort of home grown quality. And, of course, even Billy Sanders, although Australian, started at Ipswich when he was only 16.
  2. Peter Moore instead of Georg Hack?
  3. Special message for Gem, if you're out there. I've just added some old Leicester riders to my 'other tracks' album. No Charlie Barsby unforunately...
  4. Speedway In Australia Hasn't that just been done?
  5. Ian made one World Final in 1957. His appearance created a new record by becoming the third brother to contest a World Final. He scored three points and came 14th. But he was a top man at Swindon in the late 50s and early 60s and was instrumental in Swindon winning the old National League in 1957 and breaking up Wimbledon's winning run.
  6. It's a definite worth thinking about. Actually I am going to speak to the sports editor at Tempus just after Easter to discuss a future programme of books, so any suggestions would be wecome...
  7. What about the other Williams brother, Ian?
  8. I'm still here.... A biography of Michael Lee, eh? Hmmmm...
  9. Yes, it is a Maltese Cross. I've always assumed it's just a pun on the name New CROSS. Have you tried the Pathe archive, iris?
  10. Didn't know there was any. That would be amazing if someone had a copy of that.
  11. One and nine? She was a cheap bit Norbold You wouldn't get much for that in Penge Yes, but don't forget I come from Hackney....
  12. Aaaaaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh!!!!!!!!
  13. The 1939 team was, of course, completely different to the old 1928-33 set up. I have a picture of Fay Taylour somewhere. I'll try and sort it out.
  14. Thanks Norbold that is truly a wonderful sight Peter Craven in a NX jacket. Could it not have been taken on Wedenesday September the 23rd. 1959 when he won the Tom Farndon memorial trophy with a 15 point maximum though, and not when he was riding for them in a match? Could you not have somemore teeth out and do a lot more NewX pictures though please It was like pulling teeth getting me to post a photo of Peter Craven in a New Cross jacket. What more do you want? And no, the photo couldn't have been taken on September 23rd as it appeared in the 16th September New Cross programme. I do have some more New Cross photos I can post when I can sort them out.
  15. OK, just for you, newxranger, I've added that well known Belle Vue rider who guested for New Cross in 1959 to my album..... Good bit of vintage film there Grachan. Thanks for that. The commentator is wrong about Geoff Pymar's first appearance on a speedway track by the way. He first rode at Norwich in 1930 not 1933. I think the star was Crystal Palace's colours, iris. A lot of old photographs show riders (from many teams) with just plain body colours. I don't really know why that was. Perhaps someone can help out here?
  16. Crystal Palace? Done.
  17. Don't start! Just added a West Ham album and five Bristol photos under the heading Various tracks.
  18. West Ham? Now you're talking! Actually I have just found a few VERY old Bristol photos which I'll post in the next few days.
  19. I just knew the first request would be for a team I haven't got any photos of! Sorry, Grachan.
  20. I've just started a New Cross page on http://community.webshots.com/user/norbold Hope to add more as time goes on. Well, I've got to do something while I'm off with my wisdom tooth...or, rather, without my wisdom tooth! Any other teams anyone would like?
  21. The one and nines was the cheap bit.
  22. Peter Jackson has produced stats books for 1933 - 1939 as well as some post war years. All include West Ham stats. His address is 41 Riversfield Road, Enfield, EN1 3DH
  23. I think my first article will be "Famous Canterbury Supporters - Where are they now?" Unfortunately I have no photographs to go with this, but you reckon Kev H could supply me with just what I need do you?
  24. Can I write the programme notes please Shazzy?
  25. Billy was a bit like Peter Craven. (I shouldn't mention this really but there are some good action photos of Billy in a new publication called Norwich Speedway. He also features on the front cover). Billy's main problem was that he could never really get to grips with small tracks. When I first started going to speedway at the 280 yard New Cross track he was, quite frankly, just hopeless and I couldn't understand why he had such a good reputation. But he was a different rider on big tracks like his own Norwich and I did later get to see him on other tracks and could appreciate his style and what made him so good. He was, of course, always very popular in Norfolk at both Norwich and Yarmouth. He graduated from cycle speedway and in his first-ever league match (as a 17 year old) he scored 10 points. I believe he finished his career at Sheffield after Norwich closed in 1964.
