  1. No danger of that, Trees. Liesdale is right. He was just talking about his motivation for the rest of this year.
  2. Quoted from a near-contemporary magazine on the Vintage Speedway Forum: "I have been sitting tight and reading with great interest the Controversy on "who started dirt track racing" As a Member of the Ilford club committee, 1926-28, I would like readers of this Magazine to know that as far back as June 1926, Sir Fredrick Wise, President of the club, made an application to the L.C.C. for a disused trotting track known as Parsloes park. This was when the Ilford club first though of making a dirt track. We did not unfortunately get the Parsloes track, so our next step was High Beech. A.H.Finch" No mention of Barking Park there!
  3. Well done, Crumpy. That's 2 2 2 1 2 1 over the last six years. Another couple of wins and he'll be featuring in the arguments about the greatest ever. And deservedly so. A truly brilliant rider.
  4. What was worse was that he seemed genuinely amazed that Richardson had gone from first to last.
  5. They said it was because Catford had the right "period" atmosphere. i.e it was run down...
  6. You're tea-total...er, I mean, teetotal???
  7. It depends who the driver is, Parsloes...
  8. Yes, I believe the vast majority of speedway supporters came up through Eton, Cambridge and the Guards.
  9. Well, I was right then. It could be a cheap round.
  10. Some people (naming no names of course) might find it easy to talk to themselves but I don't think I would find it so easy.
  11. It's also interesting that he has decided to post this on the Backtrack Forum as that is a Magazine for the 70s and 80s. Maybe Fay Taylour was still riding then. Or it could be something to do with the standard of accuracy we've come to expect
  12. By the way, who is this "we"? Is this the Royal use?
  13. It must be a very lonely life for some people...
  14. So he can officially be recognised as second or third but won't officially be in the top eight? Don't you just love speedway rules???
  15. Sorry, I don't know the answer to that one.
  16. No, I've not come across that before either. Perhaps a few references from the good doctor would be helpful.
  17. The final greyhound meeting at Harringay was held on 25 September 1987 after which the stadium closed.
  18. I e-mailed Terry to let him know he'd had a mention on the Forum. This is his reply: "I think that I still have that Elton John 45 in my loft, It was given to me to play by Paul Deal who was the P.R. man for Rayleigh at the time, Elton had cut the disc as a demo I think at Paul had got a copy hot of the presses and brought it to the track for us to play, which needless to say I did frequently."
  19. There is of course a case for all four back...but then is that fair on the other two riders in the race who weren't involved at all? Perhaps there could be a case for excluding both.
  20. Well, I have now seen the race at last. I was unable to watch it last night but recorded it and saw it this morning. Having watched it several times, I think it was a very tough decision to make. No doubt a 50-50 call. I think if I'd been the ref I would probably have excluded Andersen but I've got no real argument with the decision. Andersen was not 100% at fault and the decision certainly doesn't make speedway "a joke".
  21. This thread started with this. The subsequent discussion has shown that it was not an easy decision to make and not everyone agrees the referee was at fault. Many agree with his decision. Some decisions are very hard to make. If the referee gets it wrong in some people's opinion it doesn't mean the sport is a joke any more than a wrong lbw decision makes cricket a joke. Let's get a bit of perspective on this, eh?
