Thanks andout. Marching Along Together it is then.

Another question for former New Cross supporters. What was the tune they officials and riders marched out to? I have a feeling that up to 1953 it was "Marching Along Together" but from 1959 onwards it was "The Entry of the Gladiators"...but I might be completely wrong. Anyone with a better memory than me?
-
Well, it's not really just a British Speedway Museum. We have special boards devoted to Ivan Mauger, Tony Rickardsson, Jason Crump amongst others as well as a section on Ice Racing. In view of the opinions expressed on here I will take up the question of the logo at the next Committee Meeting, which is on 18 December. I can't answer your question about Sunderland off-hand. I will have to check and see what we have. When I go on the 18 December I will have a look and then let you know.
-
Absolutely right, star ghost. I made my original post exactly in that spirit so that everyone would know what is happening and it's not all kept secret. The people currently on the committee are those who volunteered to work for the museum and to put a lot of their own time and, in some cases, a lot of their own money, in to making it a success. I'm sure if ianmartin and scarletrider wish to join us and have some area of expertise we can use and are prepared to put the time in, we can invite them on to the committee.
-
I don't understand what you mean really. Who would make nominations? What you need to run a museum are people with the expertise in the necessary areas. Who would be qualified to make such nominations and who would be qualified to vote on the right people?
-
It was George and Linda's choice to withdraw from the Museum now it has been set up and running. There was no vote for the committee. It is composed mainly of people who, as I have said, have been involved with the setting up and running of the Museum since the idea was first mooted. Yes, George and Linda did do a tremendous amount of work and you are probably right that we would not yet have a museum without them, but I could name a number of other people involved in its set up without whom we wouldn't have the museum either. I am not sure how you could possibly organise a vote for the committee. Who would be eligible to vote? I don't know of any other museum in the country that has a vote for its committee.
-
I'm sorry you feel like that about it, Ian, but I have explained why it was felt there should be a change in the logo. "These people" have not just come in and changed everything. Most, if not ALL, of "these people" have been involved with the Museum for almost as long as - in many cases AS long as - George and Linda and without them there wouldn't be a Museum either. You complain that you have not had a say in changing the logo. Did you have a say in choosing it in the first place then?
-
The problem is that different people have different ideas about who the REAL master was. This is a Speedway Museum with an international dimension. For that reason I think it is absolutely right not to honour one rider and one club. At the moment what we do have in the Museum is a corner devoted solely to Peter Craven and that's probably the right way to honour him. It is not tinkering, it is adopting a more professional approach. George and Linda were always the first to say they knew very little about museum presentation. Of course we owe an enormous debt of gratitude to them for bringing the museum about, but it seems to me that by making the museum the best we can possibly make it is honouring them far more than just letting it stay static and not trying to improve it.

Yes, and also Merv Harding, the Red Devil, at about the same time with his red leathers.

Well it is to me. Thanks, iris.

Sorry, keef, for not replying. Yes, as speedyguy says the last meeting at New Cross was 2 August. A day that will for ever live in infamy! I was there too - perhaps we met in another life?

Thanks steve. One last question...Eddie or Reg? iris, I'm not sure what you mean by: "In my programme it is Eddie, who has replaced the printed Reg and moved from no.6 into the no.7 spot." Are you saying that Reg was originally at no. 7, but Eddie replaced him by being moved from the team to reserve? Sounds unlikely. And who came in at no 6? Terry Stone? Was he not on the original programme?
-
Ooops, sorry, so it does. Now I know why I failed O' level maths... P.S., iris, can you tell me whether it was Reg or Eddie Reeves?
-
Yes, but what about Geoff Penniket?
-
Just one question, andout. Was that Reg Reeves or Eddie Reeves? I think it must have been Eddie as I believe Reg was injured at about that time, wasn't he? Edit: Just seen your post, iris. Oh dear, that doesn't help! Further edit: The match score was New Cross 35 Stoke 43, which is what andout's adds up to. Your programme, iris, comes out at New Cross 37 Stoke 41. So, I'll go along with andout's!

Thanks, andout. That's brilliant and much appreciated.

Why do I seem to have one Speedway Star missing from each year??? No, that's not the question I need help with... This time, it's riders, no.of rides, points, bonus points for New Cross riders in the match against Stoke at home on 9 July 1963. The results would be in the July 20th edition of Speedway Star & News. Thank you.
-
Just as well you didn't.
-
Yes and yes.
-
Thank you. Brilliant. Just what I wanted. Much appreciated.

Ove was suspended by SVEMO because he had taken part in a car race when he should have been taking part in a World Championship qualifier. Before the ban he rode for Long Eaton.
-
Thanks peatbog but I do know the results, it's the individual scores I'm after. And yes, they were the League matches. There was no Britannia Shield in 1961. I'm very much looking forward to your next communication, frigbo.
-
I realise this could be a long shot, but does anyone have details of the two National League matches between New Cross and Southampton on 18 and 19 April 1961? I am after the New Cross riders' no. of rides, points and bonus points. Thank you. P.S. The details would be in the 29 April Speedway Star and News, which, for some reason, is the only one I don't have from the 1961 season!

Wally Lloyd was a top man and one of the 1928 pioneers. He rode at Hall Green and Perry Barr in 1929. In 1930 he moved on to Crystal Palace. Then to Lea Bridge in 1931, Southampton in 1932. Back to Clapton (Lea Bridge) when Southampton moved there later in 1932, where he stayed in 1933. In 1934 he returned to Hall Green. In 1935 he rode for Hackney Wick and then on to Wembley for two seasons. In 1938 he moved to Wimbledon. He made his Test debut for England at Sydney in the 1937/38 series. In 1938/39 he appeared in all five Tests. He made his home Test debut in 1939 at Wimbledon. In 1946 he joined Belle Vue and scored 159 points. He also qualified for the British Riders' Championship final that year, scoring five points. He remained with Belle Vue in 1947, scoring 177 points. He raced in two further Test seris in 1947 and 1948. He then retired from racing to become manager at Walthamstow in 1949. His brother, Jeff, was another top rider. He rode for Newcastle, New Cross and Harringay amongst others. Do you want some more information on him as well? P.S. I have photographs of both Wally and Jeff Lloyd. Where shall I send them?
