  1. Thank you squire for commitment to the Wightlink Warriors, it is very much appreciated.
  2. Double that out of season and 3 times plus in the holiday season.
  3. Pricing is a tricky one.... for example Plymouth only charge £10 to get in and I dont believe they have seen growth on that.. we charge £12 (and other prices) for entry and our crowds have increased and I am told that in general speedway crowds are on the up - personally I am not sure about that fact but lets run with it..... but how I qualify numbers for pricing is what are our costs and what is our pricing comparable to.... for example... it's a tenner to go to the cinema, £12 is around 3.5 pints, 4 coffees, 2 gallons of fuel, a takeaway - its cheaper than ice hocky (Milton Keynes is £18), it's certainly cheaper than most family attractions on the Isle of Wight, so for me, while we are very concious of pricing (kids are free, young adults and student £7, Seniors and Service £9, Carers free) I dont believe it is where we are going wrong.... it is about perceived value of the entry fee.... if I pay to come to speedway and I am entertained, valued, interacted with, excited, then £12 is really good value, - higher prices is value in my book.... but there are many instances where that "value for entry price" is not met, and even if every speedway meeting was for free, people would not come if they were not entertained... they value their time more. Also if we discuss pricing in Poland and other countries, I would say we must compare income... In Poland, for example the minimum wage in Poland is around £380 per month (UK £7.50 per hour = £1,200), with average income around £900 per month, so the income in general in Poland is lower, hence the cost of living is lower, so I prices is lower to enter speedway (or any sporting event when compared to the UK). I do know that in Germany speedway is cheaper to enter than the UK (with higher minimum wages and average income) but in my view it is made up again because it is an all day event, and other revenue streams make up for the entry pricing. Riders should interact with fans and sponsors as much as possible - its an easy way to improve chances of support and sponsorship. As a side note I believe promoters should to and this is why I do it. Long delays between heats for sure, not ideal...but a filled half time with entertainment should be encourage...not entertainment... no half time.. push through - who wants to thumb twiddle. Completely agree on riders and teams.... challenge for that is of course rider numbers and the lack of them.
  4. Hi Everyone, It has been very interesting for me to read this thread on the forum and in particular the references to Poland, Czech and Europe in general. Like many of you I have been going to speedway, long track and grass track across Europe for many years from the very first days of the GPs and before budget airlines opened the east right up. It was always by car and always worth the trouble. Why is that... this is the question....? For me, and from what I read it is the same for many of you, it was for the whole package - the whole experience..... an event. What I have found with speedway over the years in the UK, is that because we didnt have an event as such, we went to speedway because of the group of friends we met there, our children wanted to go, or in the hope to see that race or meeting we will all talk about for years to follow. So, on the Island we have tried to make each meeting a family, event as best we can.... We want people to entertained from the moment they step through the gate to the moment they leave, so speedway in effect becomes part of the bigger show. Other things we have included are access to the pits, mini warrior races, 200 club draw, mascots, autographs, selfies, competitions, beat the starter, plus the speedway but most importantly an interpersonal relationship between fans and riders - this happens all night from mascots in their kit, to riders answering questions and selfies before meeting, opening the pits up and so on. Combine that with a great presentation team, a friendly welcoming environment and we have seen our crowd increase this year, we have a great atmosphere plus some really great racing even with our unfortunate league position. We also do lots in the community really, attend every show we can, advertise, and try to be in the public as much as we can. We also really do try to be positive. Positivity is so important believe me and even when we are having a tough time on or off the track we are always mindful that we are in the business of entertainment as well as motorcycle racing so we take posivity from everything we do... if we lose heavily, then we focus on the success of one rider, how brilliant the kids race was and aren't the mascots improving weekly. We also take the time to listen and to read and while we have a long way to go, in general I believe we have made real progress on the island to become a fun family night out which offers entertainment, is fun, friendly and good value. I would say also that we do tend to focus on kids too, having kids meeting new friends, following the speedway, taking part and being involved is really wonderful. We back that up too with the speedway school, which we have invested heavily in equipment and bikes, so that kids can come and try speedway (so can adults) for what we believe is a very cost affective gift price or indeed a price that kids and adults want to come back. We also know this works with several kids and adults now buying their bikes and equipment... We love it. I also know that when crowds get bigger another key factor in maintaining them is people like to spend time with their friends. So, when I know a new family has come I speak with them, try and involve our regular fans with them as quickly as possible to ensure they get the feel and the buzz of the whole experience. I go into our stands every meeting and there are always the same groups of friends and families that enjoy each others company and being part of the speedway night, the bigger the crowd of course the more group of friends that you have The final thing I would say, well ask really is that it is so easy to say negative things but it is much harder for us all to say what is good or has been done well. We dont have a perfect rule book by any means, there are changes that chould improve the overall speedway experience for fans that hopefully will come to fruition, and there lots of things clubs can do to improve the overall interaction with fans. I would like to say that it is not cheap or easy to run a speedway team. Our objective is to break even and this is without Martin or I taking anything including travel from the club. We work tirelessly on sponsorship and increasing our crowd numbers so that we can achieve our goals, we reinvest everything from the speedway school to the club, we rely on our volunteers so much and this is why we try our best to make it as much fun for them as it is for you/us the fans - (I am a fan too). And really finally, when you come to our stadium, I view it as though you have come to my home for dinner... I would truly hate it for you to be disappointed or not had a great time, that hurts.... the results, well I wish we won of course, but most important to us is that our fans, visitors, guests, volunteers and sponsors have a blast... See you trackside... and come and visit us soon, I think you will enjoy it.
  5. Hey, I am glad someone spotted this... believe it or not this is something we had discussed at the start of the season of last season and even with the unfortunate David, the medical teams, the fence repair crew, we still managed to get a message to Angie Cooper (who works with school kids) to embark on operation - "entertain the kids".... it worked and was pretty well received. Thanks for the feedback.. Barry
  6. Hi, I will leave this here actually as I initially read it as we on the Isle of Wight were stopping people bringing in their own food and drink ha ha.. .sorry. That is absolutely incorrect, as is the assumption we only sell junk food, who was it who told you this as is completely wrong. The only thing we ask is people put their rubbish in one of the many bins around, and if they want to bring a picnic they need to sit on the grass on bends 1 and 2. Finally, we have, I suspect, the best value food outlet in speedway that has both fast and healthy options. Why is this the case, because we want a family of 4 to be able to come to the Warriors and get entry and a meal for less than £40 and in most cases this is absolutely possible. Finally if there is ever a case of anyone being denied the ability to bring food in, then please report it to me, as they will not have been told it by our staff. Many thanks, Barry
  7. Thanks for the feedback and this is troubling to hear because we are in every holiday magazine, the Beacon, the county press, we have weekly advertising on the radio, we have been on Solent TV, our website, social media, we do every show on the island we can and we have banners at most tourist attractions and caravan sites. But as you say there is more we can do and we will keep doing as much as we can. Thanks for the feedback and if your friend comes again, invite him as my guest for him missing us first time. See you trackside.
  8. Just to let everyone know that Ann did come to Speedway on Tuesday and had a wonderful time with our team and met some great new friends both from the Island and Birmingham. The great news is that she is hooked again on the sport and will be a regular at the Warriors from now. A win, win. I want to say I have been amazed at people’s response to this. For me, I did it because I hate the thought of anyone listening to speedway through an open window on race night.... in all honesty it brought back memories of when I was young and played up and my parents punished me by not allowing me to speedway - it was torture But to have fans contact me to pay her entry and other things, was amazing. Perhaps, if we concentrate on the great things about our sport from our fans, our lords and masters, our riders, our officials, our sponsors and speedway as a whole, we will for sure be in a better place. I have learnt that being positive and believing in what you do is a very powerful thing, for sure we all get frustrated - and we have had a lot of frustration this year, but I truly believe in what we do. I truly believe in our staff. I am truly thankful for all our sponsors. I am truly thankful for everyone who steps through our gate because they also believe and share our vision. This is why I believe in the Warriors and the Warrior Way. I am not ashamed to tell you all that it is so hard at times, it eats money like no one can believe, even at our level, when a rain off during a meeting wipes out a substantial amount of sponsorship because of all the costs associated with it... and I know we have more due to being on an Island (about 1k in ferry costs) but it will hurt any club. But the upside are times like on Tuesday with Ann, the speedway school, last heat deciders, fans faces, kids laughing, the Warrior Way affecting kid’s lives for the better, community, unity, vision and belief... now all we need to do is grow it, grow the belief, grow the vision and things will improve, crowd power is massive.... a good time creates an even better time the week after as they tell their friends.... and the cycle continues. Finally, clubs are beginning to follow some of our ideas, and some are even being creative themselves, which is just great news. Enjoy your speedway wherever you go, try to big up the good stuff and be constructive where it needs it.... we listen, we try to influence others, and if you can come to the Island do try to come, we appreciate travellers because we do it each week too, but I will guarantee you a great time. Come grab me I am always in yellow and blue. See you trackside. Barry
  9. Every club would like more fans..... we built from a fan base of around 80 - 100 so the fact that we now have 50 season ticket holders, and around 150 - 200 additional fans is the right start. Every week we analyse and inspect our results. But let us be clear, we have to break even and must continue to grow in order for Martin and I to continue doing it. The league this year hasn't been too kind to us and we hope for an upturn in credibility, teamwork and unity for our league. Thanks again for the feedback See you trackside.
  10. Hi, You make a very valid point about crowd size - without it of course we have no speedway. Martin and I monitor everything we do, and this of course includes the crowd size. Most importantly for us is the comparison with the previous seasons number and that they are on the increase. I am proud to say so far we can confirm this as being true for 2017 but it is early days. We are, at them moment, very reliant upon the tourist season and sponsorship but this cannot detract from us having the need for well attended speedway meetings outside of the holiday season - otherwise it would make more sense to just run open meetings during the holidays. With the fantastic sponsorship that we received this year our target is not only to break even but to use this sponsorship to further grow our crowd sizes. We have invested in a lot more marketing across the island so we will monitor this carefully. We are both realists and in order to survive we must break even, Martin and I are not millionaires, we are hardworking normal people who had the chance to live the dream and be speedway promoters and we love it. We do our best because this reflects on our fans, sponsors and the speedway community. We make so many sacrifices to run the club, you cannot imagine, but we hope that these are recognised and that people continue to embrace the Warrior Way, continue to want to see the Warriors and our sponsors to continue to believe in the way the we run speedway and the show the we put on for our fans. Lets hope this continues... Thanks for your feedback and do come and see us. Barry
  11. Hi There, You are absolutely right that I was not there on Thursday and it breaks my heart to miss meetings but unfortunately my business life takes me away on race night. Normally we do run an extremely slick operation, namely the fact that we are also travelling too and from the island and we want the speedway meeting to be part of an overall show that lasts between 1.30 and 2.00 hours. Thats the weekly target and from what you have said, this is the first time I believe we have been outside of those parameters. We have them by the way because we feel less than an 1.30 is too short and over 2 hours is too long. Normally our interval are slick with the kids bike race and mascots on track along with the 50/50 raffle and rider autographs. For us it's about the experience. Next time you visit, bring your wife again and I will take you both for a bit of a behind the scenes look at what we do, which I hope you will both enjoy. I always have a blue and yellow shirt on so you cannot miss me. All the best and thanks for you feedback - feedback positive and contructive is always welcome with the Warriors. Take your wife again, she will love it. All the best Barry
  12. We now have live internet radio coverage of our home meetings so tune in online to vectis radio and listen to speedway coverage the Warrior way. Hope you enjoy it and thanks for all the support so far this year. See you trackside during the season
  13. Hi, May the 2nd is the next one and then we will announce further dates soon. All the best Barry
  14. Completely agree with you but unfortunately with the points limit reduction and also losing our case with Harland Cook (which I still am completely sure is incorrect but we have to obey it) - we are left with little option. And by the way it is not really down to the promoters more the restraints with which we find ourselves in - my personal view is the points limit should be 42 every year) But you are right and there are some riders who in my view need to undertake a very quick learning curve and speed increase especially around our track, but I am hopeful that Jamie will make the grade and should he not then it is us who have failed him and we take that personally. What I really like about Jamie so far is that he keeps getting quicker and with faster riders around him this will, we hope, continue. In any case we have to put on a show and he needs to be part of that one way or another... and he is starting by going on TV next Friday (glamour boy haha) Lets see but whatever I can assure you I will put on the best display and show I can, in the best surrounds I can, the best way I can....I am always open to listen and I hope those of you who visit will see some of the changes we implemented this year including some that I read on the forum such as Young Adult Pricing... See you trackside I hope in 2017...do grab me and give me you thoughts... I am usually leaping around in a yellow and blue shirt Barry
  15. Thanks for all the comments about Jamie.... Having watched him he does have a great chance and its a learning curve for him..... I think Thursday is going to be a tough meeting for him though as we have purposely put together a strong Vince Mapley Memorial and it will only be his 4th real session but it will show him what he needs to do unless he has a cracker in which case we will all be very happy......either way, he is a great lad and one thing is for sure, we will give him his chance, a good chance, and support his progress.

  17. Hey... great to hear from you... although dont call me Bazza it makes your nose bleed.... ha ha ha ha joking Crowds at the end of last year we around 600... 100 plus of which were kids... we have a target to increase this again this year to we hope hit 1000 regularly.... also we have grown the school - My First Skid massively. Regards the water - we have a 20% discount with Wightlink and if you book relatively well in advance it is not too bad, and for foot passengers it is around £8 after discount... then we do our bit and provide free taxi service to and from the stadium to ensure you arrive safely, promptly and without charge

  19. I should like to add that where I wrote "We increase our season tickets by 50% ... I didnt mean in price but in sales...
  20. just to throw my 10 cents in, as a promoter and hopefully shed some light about what we do and why..... Firstly, we partner with all printed media... In our case, Isle of Wight County Press (we have weekly reports and paid for advertising), the Beacon (a monthly magazine with monthly fixtures, an article and a paid for advert), we are in visit IOW magazine for Tourism and then the mainland we work with Gosport Globe and The News (Portsmouth) - I am working on Southampton but its a challenge so any help gratefully received. Then we move to radio... we partner with IOW Radio (Reports, competitions, interviews and paid advertising), Wave 105 (Reports, interview and competitions) and Vectis Radio (reports, interviews and competitions). Then we go socially using FB and Twitter... we run videos, competitions, very regular news updates, and feedback is always welcome Then our media channel with Speedway Portal - we have a full media hub with all our radio, TV, video, written reports in one place.... Then our website... information, news and updates, Then our own printed media.... Leaflets, pop up banners, posters, printed banners..... priceless and works. Then we do shows...last year we attended 90% of the shows, fates, and other events on the Island, we also did the Celebration of Speedway. We will do more shows this year....this was a big success for us and works We attend events at our stadium.... when the stadium is used for another event we always ask to put a speedway display out... its always welcomed...this works... We have the wandering weslake.... Peter, one of our team, walks up and down the beach pushing his weslake.... answering questions... this works.... We also do supermarkets... Tesco and Morrisons so far... we will get more... this works, we proved it.... We promote other attractions and they promote us.... this works, we proved it. Then we run competitions.... for example... crazy ways to deliver a leaflet... last year we had someone on horseback doing it... this works, we proved it and we got so much media out of it... We run - bring my class... where kids can bring all their class, scout group, cadets... to speedway with their parents for free... It works, we proved it last year. We give away tickets for any community event on the island. .... this works, we proved it. We have competitions with our sponsors to give away tickets to their customers... this works, we proved it The Warrior 100... is a huge success... 1000 of views of our weekly live draw (still numbers available) We do tractor cam, bowser cam and any other cam that we can use to promote the club live in the build up to race day The Warrior Way... is a huge success of people buying in to what we believe it.... if you have not experienced it, it is really quite amazing... My First Skid.... Get the kids, adults, grand parents... anyone on the track riding a bike.... We try to promote every way that we can.... we sponsor other clubs events for example... this year it is Darcy's meeting... last year it was Leicester Easy Riders Races Jackets and a meeting in the USA This year on April 20th we will do the Bryn Williams Celebration and it is a free to the public speedway meeting... so please come and experience the Warrior Way and NL racing. Now I dont claim to have every answer... and as you can see we do a lot of things and it is really tiring to do it....but I can tell you this... I am committed, I lead the team with Martin Widman where we do all roles with our helpers, each job is as important as the next, we are always positive, we want to meet people and listen to them - they may have a great idea... my team is confident in themselves and their roles - we value them...For example.... I would rather have a committed person who makes a mistake than a non committed person who isnt really interested but makes no mistakes.... everyone has a voice and it is my job, along with Martin, to filter their voices to make the best direction we can take the club in while staying within budget. I also totally believe in our product... we add value to our sponsors, our community, the economy and peoples well being... I can prove it. I totally believe in fan interaction and the all round show of speedway... not just racing... it is a show with us... and I am totally committed to improving the show each week. For sure we will have a problem from time to time but that is life... nothing is ever perfect and we work to improve and build upon the Warrior Way. We also believe in the family experience... we want families to feel comfortable with us, and this includes pricing and entertainment. Children with us are free to all our events (except MFS and then its only £30), we introduced young adult pricing 17 - 20 this year so I will report back to you. We also increased our season tickets by 50% this year.... small steps I know... Finally..... We value everyone who makes the speedway on the island work... last season our gates increased each week.... we value all our fans, our team, the riders and we value sponsors, who I have to say we work equally as hard with.... last year we retained 95% of our sponsors.... but promotion is time consuming, can be costly (radio and papers), but it also creates a team and a self belief when you see it work and the more it works, the more the self belief grows and the bigger your crowds become.... oh, and I absolutely love this and I know people do too... I know we change peoples lives.. sounds crazy but look on our FB pages... it means so much to us all and even though Martin and I lead the team that support us are amazing, confident, part of the club, and valued...
  21. Fans travelling from the mainland to watch speedway or take part in My First Skid at the Andrew Younie Smallbrook Stadium will once again receive the support of Warriors lead sponsor Wightlink. The incentive code is now operational and give a 20% discount on travel when booked through the Warriors website http://wightwarriors.co/club-info/travel-portal Wightlink Warriors Commercial Director Barry Bishop said, "Everyone at the Warriors would like to that Wightlink for their super support of the club in 2017. Their support and sponsorship will make a big difference to the Warriors in 2017 and we are very proud to announce that Wightlink have extended their support to include once again travelling fans and those attending My First Skid. We encourage fans to book as early as they can to get the very best pricing especially around the peak travel times in school holidays and festivals. This year will see the Wightlink Warriors working more closely with the ferry company to encourage fans to come to the island and Warriors fans and riders to travel to away fixtures on the mainland. This is the start of a special relationship as we look to grow all aspects of the club and Smallbrook Stadium and we thank everyone at Wightlink for their support."
  22. The Bryn Williams Celebration a free speedway meeting. Bryn Williams was part of the team on the Isle of Wight since the club began in 1996 and was an extremely popular figure throughout speedway. To celebrate his life, the Wightlink Warriors will hold a meeting with free entry to anyone on April 20th, when the Wightlink Warriors take on the Weymouth Wildcats in a NL challenge to celebrate Bryn’s life. The Wildcats have built a great side including former Warriors Kelsey Dugard and Mark Baseby, who we look forward to welcoming back. In addition to the main event we can confirm the Men in Black will be attending and putting on some demonstration races. Fans, Islanders, well anyone really, will be able to come along and experience NL speedway, the Warrior Way and a celebration of Bryn and all that he cared about. It is going to be great fun, so please do get involved. To help fund the meeting, the Wightlink Warriors have come up with 3 ways fans and businesses can support Bryns meeting with a sponsorship system for £100, £250 and £500. The categories will be You’re Tops £100, You’re Great £250 and You’re a Warrior £500. All sponsorship which exceeds the running cost of the meeting will be donated to the Speedway Riders Ben Fund, something Bryn was hugely proud of. If you would like to get involved in Bryn’s meeting and can help celebrate his life, please get in touch at speedwayontheisland@yahoo.co.uk

  24. I am on a mission of positivity today...... The Wightlink Warriors to Sponsor the Darcy Ward Invitational meeting at Poole The Wightlink Warriors have sponsored heat 10 of the Darcy Ward International to be held at Poole on March 24th. The meeting is set to be a fantastic speedway event with lots of international riders not often seen racing in the UK with the proceeds of the event going help Darcy Ward who received life changing injuries while racing in Poland. Wightlink Warriors Commercial Director Barry Bishop said, "Some people may find it quite an unusual step for speedway teams to sponsor other speedway events but I view this type of thing as very much part of our all-round message. Last year we sponsored a heat at Champion Speedway in the US and this really raised the clubs profile over there along with our fantastic relationship with Cobra's Garage Mahal, we also sponsored the Leicester Easy Riders Race Jackets raising our profile amongst the Amateur riders and I see no reason why, taking the opportunity to support Darcy with his rehabilitation and the Darcy Ward Invitational should not help raise the clubs profile further along the south coast and throughout speedway just a little bit more. It is also true to say that we have worked well with our sponsors based along the south coast and I am sure many of them will attend this meeting. I hope that our sponsors, fans and all speedway fans, will enjoy seeing our support for one of the Pirates' favourite sons in the programme and the knowledge that we are just across the water if they ever want to come and celebrate the Warrior Way with us. As part of our sponsorship package we have been given a pair of tickets to the event which is on March 24th. We plan to give these tickets away as part of our Warrior 100 draw and it will be just brilliant if we can sell the last few remaining numbers. So, with just 10 numbers remaining (26, 28, 39, 72, 74, 79, 81, 83, 86 and 93) take your opportunity to be part of the Warrior Way and have the chance to win a weekly prize of up to £100 (currently at £90) and all for £1.25 a week. Throw into the mix these tickets, which will be an additional prize on the March 16th draw, why miss out. Contact Speedwayontheisland@yahoo.co.uk and we will put you in contact with Warrior 100 coordinator Colin Whitlock. Finally, we would like to wish everyone a great day at Poole on March 24th, that it is a huge success and we are very proud to be part of it."
  25. back to something more positive.... Wightlink Warriors to support start-up businesses. The Wightlink Warriors are to support start-up and new businesses on the Isle of Wight with a selection of different promotional activities. The Wightlink Warriors Commercial Director Barry Bishop gives more details, “When Martin and I returned Speedway to the Isle of Wight we really valued the support of individuals and businesses across the Island and south coast that gave us a helping hand and without them, the start-up costs for the project would have probably doubled. Martin and I take inspiration from the Warrior Way and those that support its values – one of which is community. Martin, Team Warrior and I are always bouncing ideas around that can benefit the club, community or speedway while trying to innovate and think a little bit different to the norm. In 2016 we really got to understand the value of marketing and especially the value of those who helped us to locate banners and leaflets across the Island. These conversations have allowed us to confirm that the Wightlink Warriors would like to offer three companies the opportunity to have free marketing with the club in 2017. On offer is a trackside banner for 2 companies but one lucky company will be able to sponsor a meeting, with up to 10 guests including a meal, and have a great opportunity to bring their valued customers, partners or staff to a unique place to celebrate their business. Our offer is open to any business on the Isle of Wight and all they must do is tell us, why their business deserves this and what value being part of the Wightlink Warriors and the Warrior Way could bring them in 2017. Good luck. Please email your entries to Speedwayontheisland@yahoo.co.uk by April 5th. The Wightlink Warriors speedway, sponsorship and fun for all.”
