Got a report from the previous year, which confirms Lammy as champ. At this time it was points accumulated over a number of meetings Wilbur 'Lammy' Lamoreaux, lithe Frenchman from Pasadena, today holds the title as the result of a scintillating performance turned in at the seasons final meet in the Emeryville Motorcycle Speedway last night. Although Lamoreaux's riding was of the sensational variety, and he had clinched the championship before the meet had reached the half way mark, he was given plenty of competition by Byrd McKinney and Garland Johnson, the latter something of a dark horse so far as last evenings program was concerned. Ed Jones of Stockton secured the Northern California title by some consistent riding although A. Chasteen of Oakland, runner up copped a special match race. Lamoreaux climaxed a great evening of piloting to win the final scratch race, with McKinney 2nd and Miny Waln, deposed title holder, third The Milne brothers, Jack and Cordy, expected to sparkle..............and motor trouble eliminating them early

Well basically start with the 1934 championship at the L.A Coliseum, which was a 3 day event. A great idea I think, but think it was a one-off in the history of the sport It seems like the first 2 days were qualifiers for the final day and it looks to me as if the points from the quali meetings were taken over to the final See that day 1 had a 12,000 att and 10,000 for day2. No idea about the final day, if anyone has info ? If anyone has any heat details that would be great One query for day 1. The report I have seen say's 'Pete Coleman carrying on for the injured Jack Milne'. Not quite sure what this means as in the line-up for the final day, both are listed Day 2 mentions Sam Arena deserted his hospital bed to ride and he qualified!!! And that Garland Johnson forced Wilbur Lamoreaux, the reigning title holder(important because one or two sites list Ray Grant as 1933 champ?), to a new track record. Johnson took 4 2nd places to turn a score of 12 from a possible 16. So I guess both quali meets were run over 16 heats ? The final line-up; 'Sprouts' Elder (riding with 3 broken ribs from a previous crash),W.Lamoreaux, G.Johnson, S.Arena, C.Self, B.McKinney, C.Milne, M.Waln, B.Lisman, P.Coleman, J.Milne, E. Hinkle,R.Roberts, K.Schofield, E.Spadefore, E.Jones, E.Farrand Just know Cordy and Lammy tied for points on 28 and I am guessing they had a run-off which Cordy led narrowly all the way to the finish and broke the track record. Possibly though they met in their last heat and Cordy had a 32 pt max from the two meetings !! Milne then had a total of 32, Lammy finished 2nd and Byrd McKinney 3rd. Not sure on their totals then Earl Farrand had 25 as did Bo Lisman, Pete Coleman 24, Kenny Schofield 24 and Elder had 20 Anyone fill in the gaps ? A few weeks later Lloyd 'Sprouts' Elder announced his retirement from the sport and that he was joining the Fresno California Highway Patrol

Any details on riders for that ?

Having a stab in the dark here, but if you are wondering why there are 2 identical threads John, I think if you look back through the forum you yourself have duplicated topics . Now if it is another question , we await clarification on that

Well, that is a bit strange The actual newspaper report about the brothers riding US bikes is dated 15.11.1933 . Ok reading the other link, it does put the appearance earlier at 11. + 14 November which makes sense with my report, although if one or two of those 2nd places were match races........ I also have a report of a meeting on 28.11.1933 which states The Milne brothers, Jack and Cody, expected to sparkle during the meet, failed to make their presence felt to any appreciable degree, a combination of slide and motor trouble eliminating them early One or two interesting bits from the time mention 'Mark Porter, hard riding captain of the San Diego team' plus one or two riders wearing the colors of the Emeryville Red Devils......

Certainly takes some doing to go to Australia and beat some of their best, as it seems brother Jack also did twice against possibly a better line up as it looks like some of the top English riders were also there the year before ?
-
It is interesting because one of the articles I was reading today from 1933 was talking about Byrd McKinney , who had the great nickname , King of Maniac, winning against Cordy Milne and beat brother Jack in a match race. But the surprising bit for me was that the Milne brothers were riding US bikes and that 'to date all the flat track racing cycles having been imported from England....' Now that is quite a turnaround from a few years earlier when a lot of the top riders were on Harley or Indian bikes

Jouni Seppänen and Ulf Ledström are the next two riders for the Bauer farewell meeting

Seen a couple of vague mentions of speedway in Mexico. Today looking at the line-up for the US 3 day Championship event at the L.A Coliseum, 1934 ,it mentions that Cordy Milne is the champion of Mexico !!! Anyone have any details at all of speedway in that country ?

Came across this report Omaha, Neb.November 26 1914 Roy Milner of Cleveland, the first motorcyclist rider to test the new Omaha auto speedway, which was opened today, was killed when he attempted to take a curve at a high rate of speed. Milner was thrown from his wheel against one of the uprights. His head was crushed Strangely looking up the track on wiki it states it was opened a year later!!! A mistake or another track?
-
As an addition, but also a diversion, looking at US reports from 1933/34 Lamoreax was known as 'The Flying Frenchman' !!!
-
Yes great. Your comments explain it all as of course the programme states. I have always seen the British Match race title and didn't know it was called the Championship of the World. Or maybe I did and have since forgotten, which is also possible with my noddle !!!

Vojens GP 12th September 2020

Always remember a Denmark v Rest of the World meeting where I narrowly escaped a major crash on my bike coming home on the soaked motorway aquaplaning and doing a broadside !! It poured down during the meeting and I gave up and left, and shortly after it was called off anyway -
Has to be said, not for the first time, that any inclusion of Mauger in a Wimbledon best 7 has no hold on the reality of his Wimbledon career, where his appearances were few and far between and not very good, and more to do with his career elsewhere. For the Dons, even including his re-appearance in 1963 where he was better than the 1950s, but doubt overall he averaged more than about 4pts, more often than not he had two rides and scored 0-2 pts

Vojens GP 12th September 2020

Think Vojens is in a known wet region. I remember going up for a Saturday afternoon 1. Division meeting. The whole way up from Hamburg was relatively dry and sunny until about 5 miles from the track the road was wet and got worse the closer I got. Rode into the car park heard the meeting was called off and headed straight back to Hamburg. A week or so later a friend of mine from Germany told me he was in the cafe and saw me ride in and out, but I was gone before he had a chance to say hello !!! Did see the area described as wetter than most on a site that had nothing to do with speedway. Just like I saw that Nordhastedt where a North German track is, is colder than the surrounding area -
Also interesting that Jack Parker is introduced as current world champion. Which backs up his own claim and shows that many had a claim to being WC before the official championship came into being
-
No he wasn’t the one I saw listed. In fact from memory Billy Galloway was listed as such. Interesting that he ended up living in Scotland after his career ended
-
Yes I think so. As I posted elsewhere A. Hunter was billed as being from England when he rode in Australia in early 1928. Also seen at least one rider billed as ‘the Flying Scotsman’ but he appears to be someone living in Australia as well
-
Got a few names wrong here, but I think Tom Sanders is our man https://www.britishpathe.com/video/england-wins-final-speedway-test
-
Didn’t he appear in the film Money for Speed ? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Money_for_Speed And thought he was to be seen in a test match v Australia ?

Have to say reading the reports etc from Hoskins' time at Maitland and one thing you have to say is he was highly respected and managed to get the Carnivals in the newspapers. Before a meeting there was a little snippet every day and a decent Ad also. Also a report on him entitled 'Born organiser' and how he since he came to the Society their membership had doubled etc Report say's he left though to go to the RAC in Sydney !!! And wasn't their too long before a better opportunity opened to be secretary at Newcastle speedway
-
I also read that Tauser wanted to return, I think Hackney wanted him, but then ‘foreign’ riders were banned in 1934, due to the 'English Ministry of Labour', rather than speedway administration decision!!! In this sense ‘foreign’ didn’t include Commonwealth riders, so the riders affected were Hansen at West Ham and Roth at Plymouth But it is interesting in 1933 that these riders decided to do USA and Grosskreutz, Case etc were in Germany and Scandinavia
