Think I saw him in Germany a few years ago for the U21 SWC along with Smudger. If I remember rightly Courtney was spannering for one of the young Aussie riders. Not sure though Haven't heard about Shawn Moran for a few years. Anyone know what he is up to ? Is he still involved in speedway in South Germany ?

Will British Speedway Survive ?

Actually there is a link between speedway and cricket. One of the pioneer speedway promoters A.J Hunting held the first one day cricket game in Australia. It was a success , but the authorities then warned any player getting involved in a further game would be banned. So that was the end of that for about 30 years or so -

Will British Speedway Survive ?

You could have a point there. The go-kart racing and I think to a lesser extent the quads were a filler and they were obviously trying to put on a show, which generally meant one guy taking his foot off the gas to let the other catch him up a bit and then have a little battle again, ad infinitum. It was too obviously staged and at least in my case the interest quickly waned -

Yes, I know from some meetings here. They have had go-kart or quad racing etc and it just got in the way a bit. But it was the Short track or whatever it is called that really got up peoples noses and they started to protest about it and said instead of that why not some junior speedway...... -
In what order would you place these Aussie greats???

I would have loved to have seen those early Soviet tests in the 60s. Well, I might have, but have no memory of which teams I saw in those days -
With the success of finding out what Rick Miller is now doing, are there any other ex Bees out there who feel like letting us all know how they are getting on/recall old times, I am particularly interetsed in late 70's, 80's & early 90's I thought it was more a 'what are they doing now?' topic, going from the OP

Very interesting that the safety fence was used 18 years later at Rye House. I never knew that. Not much wiser about John Lalley though

I agree with part of that. I went to a joint speedway/MotoX event and the MotoX jumps were far more spectacular and much better presented than the speedway. Smolinski really ripped into the speedway presentation and said it was old fashioned compared to the spectacular jumps. And I would go to another Night f the Jumps or whatever it is. The things is though, it is a one-off. I wouldn't pay that sort of money weekly nor monthly, and it is I would think repeptetive anyway As it goes, after not going to a meeting last season (Not because I didn't want to mind, it was more a clash with something else or when I had the time the weather wasn't up to much. And I have enough experience of travelling miles only for a meeting to be called off or pushed through with no actual racing because of the conditions, and won't pay out for that) I was actually looking forward to this season. And now it looks like it will hardly get going -

Certainly is outrageous, but you have to wonder just how many metres Gollob made up sometimes....I know there are often hints at rocket powered bikes. Gollob often came from way behind on top riders -
Remember seeing him on his European debut in Denmark with his curly hair !! Saw a few of the Aussie kids when they first came over to Denmark. Darcy, the Kurtz brothers etc

iris123 replied to Sidney the robin's topic in Years Gone By
Certainly Grosskreutz had a relatively long career, from the late 20s until the 50s I think, whereas a lot of the early Aussie greats seemed to get in, earn a lot of money and get out of the sport fairly quickly .He did though, retire and comeback a number of time. Once I think his retirement only lasted a couple of weeks -

Bet they were all filmed and cut for Pathe etc and most probably the full meeting footage has gone now. Would be nice to think some great footage is yet to be re-discovered -

Just a pity so much has been lost or not filmed. Looked for something special from the likes of Peter Craven and it is hard. Bit of film from a world final he won(year after Ronnie Moore) and the commentator is saying what a great meeting it is, but the actual racing shown is fairly boring, sadly -

Of course one of the very best is that Joe Screen Polish league one where he squeezes through a gap that isn't really there to win the league for his team, I think -

Certainly the piece about long believed that referee Traunspurger 'was himself Polish' comes across a bit strange....by whom? -

I would say it wasn't so clear cut and probably would go with racing incident and a re-run without Plech. But just wanted to add to the debate with some of the incidents during the meeting -

The message coming out yesterday seemed to be normal life won't return for about 6 months and self isolation will be here for a few months.....so I can't see them opening up sports stadia to the public any time soon
