Tai Woffinden book at £8.99
iris123 replied to Steve Shovlar's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
‘Other riders do not get pulled up about their personality’ was the bit I was talking about. It isn’t just no. 1s. I could also mention Lewis Bridger...plus I think one or two on here quite like Gartitty from a few posts seen -

Not true at all. Just look at Garrity, and he isn't a no.1 anywhere apart from in his own head -

Think if I remember rightly Fundin had quite a hectic schedule, what with being based in out of the way Norwich in the days of old cars and not so great roads and then fitting in Sweden and world championship rounds abroad. The British riders had it better i'd guess. Especially those based in London -
On an international front Wimbledon and Smederna shared a few Gote Nordin, Tommy Jansson, Bo Jansson, Stefan Salomonsson and possibly Kai Niemi? Guess nowadays with the numbers riding all over the place there will be more shared riders, but for the time there was a good link between the clubs

Seems a bit extreme to me, but you never know wh they are going to take advice from....

But your love of the sport must be ingrained, for you to stick around on here so often and share your very interesting pieces now and again How they have entertained us over the years. What would we do without you(is that an exclamation mark or a question.....who cares?)?!?!

Nice to get the chance to be a part of @canalplussportpolska program R1 yesterday! I think I made some good points from the foreign riders point of view. We all... want to race in @speedwayekstraliga and personally I have no problem at all with starting the season in Poland until the borders are open again and the 14 day quarantine rule has been lifted. The main concern is the annex and the lack of information in this one, if this one can be sorted with a few changes everything will be fine. I love Poland, I live here and almost have for 5 years now so don’t mistake any articles released for my words cause I have not spoken with any media’s a part from my interview on tv last night! The Danish federation has as well as Ekstraliga put us in a very hard and complicated situation and both of them have good and bad arguments, but please stop spreading rumors etc. We’re trying to fix the situation together and accomplish a united decision. So stop the “fake news” and believe the situation will be resolved

Five riders that you felt were underrated.

Difficult to make any personal opinion from a practice and then a meeting which I saw at White City. But his record in the States is impressive and he could have made an impact I think if he stuck at it in Europe. But the mentality was wrong or he was having the life he wanted in California, which you can't fault him for that -

The place was great for the big meetings, even the late 60s early 70s, I really enjoyed the normal meetings. But those big ones like the Internationale or BL 2 rider s championship I thought were amazing for atmosphere. I also enjoyed those first few years when we went down a league, funnily enough. Thought the team was a great mix with Ferreira, Johns and Jamie Luckhurst. Wasn't so keen on Mike Bennett for some reason. Thought he came across as a fake local DJ sort of guy. But that is my opinion. On the other hand, like you say I have great respect with how Len ran Hackney -

Must hold my hands up and say I had very little interest in the people running the sport in those days, unlike yourself and Steve, it seems. Littlechild, Ochiltree, Berry etc I did. think Silver was a good showman, but I saw him a lot more and in comparison I thought Maido was poor. But purely on the surface. I have no idea what Cyril was like behind closed doors -

So John Berry thinks he was over rated rather than. under rated ? And I think he was rated where he belonged. Opinions eh -

iris123 replied to Sidney the robin's topic in Years Gone By
Opinions of course. But the thing I don’t get with the under- rated term is they are all riders that weren’t great riders, so aren’t rated as highly. That doesn’t make them under rated, just rated where they belong, imo -
Very interesting John. Any more personal speedway experiences you want to share with us ?

Indeed. I was actually wondering the point of the thread. Is it looking for specific jackets that were only or first used in the 70s ? As a lot of the choices seem to not really fall into the category Wembley or West Ham for instance are no different in the 70s to what they were in the 40s as is Belle Vue......

Someone, well arnieg has compiled a list for last year and it seems they have done some previous years as well. But not sure if they are online http://www.speedwayplus.com/

Think someone on another thread mentioned a very important point. Not about the riders, who are fairly young and fairly healthy. But a lot of people behind the scenes who help speedway run, and a lot of the fans are in the vulnerable group, who are the ones who must stay out of the way of contact with others, and are probably the last people who will be allowed out/and or attend large gatherings...

This is true I once went on a thread titled 'My speedway experiences', expecting to read about someone's personal speedway experiences, as you would. What I found was just a few tales about speedway riders that didn't particularly have anything to do with the person who started the thread. It didn't even appear that the person was present at the time and maybe never even saw the riders in question. Just a mish-mash

Ok. I thought there was more and Fundin etc were also involved. My bad memory

Yes, and of course the Golden Jubilee meeting at Hackney in 78 was basically a golden greats as well
-
First time I had seen it. I was watching an all round competition with Hans Nielsen, Peter Collins and Egon Müller among others, who competed in 3 meetings on a speedway, Long track and grass track in 1986, then came across this one

See a number of those champs riding in Landshut in 1989 Fundin, Briggs, Penhall, Collins, Michanek and Knutson plus others like Terry Betts, Norman Hunter, Zenon Plech,Jiri Stancl,Wack Hofmeister and Lehtinen
