Not sure what you are on about John. The fact is, this is a thread that interests me as a Dons fan. Think you made a bit of a Wally of yourself with your Terry Mussett comments. You also started the day, by posting a confused smiley on my comment to Norbold, as if you just want to attract attention, which you seem to confirm in this post As it was, I thought we were getting all matey. I even thanked you for your help in the Jimmy Gibb thread and you have also come onto the Charlie Spinks thread with a few photos.....

Guess you are lucky your parents favourite rider wasn’t ‘Crusty’ Pye or Digger Pugh or even Pee Wee Cullum

Wondering how it is all going to affect Wittstock. See they have a squad training planned for tomorrow. Thought the German/Polish border was still closed to all but essential travel or that you must enter quarantine if you come back to Poland. So maybe training without their Polish riders. But also saw that for Germany at least you don't have to go into quarantine until you are more than 72 hours outside the country (the report was about the Netherlands) -
The next meeting saw another win for Charlie. This time in the Silver Sash. His main rival though, Frank Pearce couldn't compete as they limited the competition to bikes with a bhp of 2.75 or under, and Pearce's Douglas was over the limit Spinks made it 3 on the trot with a somewhat lucky win the next week in the Silver Armlet !! Frank Pearce I guess hadn't received his new under the limit, bike, so although in the meeting, didn't compete for the main prize. Arthur Yenson was well in the lead after Spinks made a bad start, but his bike packed up on the 3rd lap, leaving Spinks to take yet another prize ahead of ever improving Vic Huxley. All watched by a crowd of 18,000 25,000 turned up at the next meeting for the Golden Helmet, which Pearce would defend as there was no bhp limit in this competition. In the end though it wasn't Pearce who ended Charlie's run, but Yenson, winning by 25 lengths with Spinks another 25 ahead of Pearce. Frank Arthur having dropped out of the final with mechanical problems An interesting note is that both Pearce and Yenson were English by birth

Any chance a local newspaper might have something ? https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/results/1928-09-26?NewspaperTitle=Eastbourne%2BGazette&IssueId=BL%2F0001928%2F19280926%2F&County=Sussex%2C England

Yes, I thought he looked a good prospect as well. A 7+ average in his first season was really promising

Not too sure what went on in the early days. Is a report of a Charlie Spink from South Brisbane falling down the hold of a ship and injuring both ankles. Then in July 1925 Charlie Spinks(Brisbane) fell and fractured his arm in a meeting in Bundaberg. In February of 1926 he was competing at Cessnock alongside the Datson brothers and Billy Galloway, but was plagued with bike problems . Then all of a sudden it seems he alongside Frank Pearce were named as joint favourites to win the Golden Helmet at the opening meeting at the Ekka. He had another night of misfortune, falling twice at the same spot on the track. Once just as he had made up his handicap on Vic Huxley and passed him with 'a furlong to go'. He finished 4 lengths behind Pearce in the final of the Golden Helmet, so the two pre-meeting favourites came 1st and 2nd. Not a bad tip A week later the tables were turned and Spinks managed to beat Pearce in the final of the Silver Gauntlet

Putt never got the chance to tell the story of how his touring troupe nearly died in the desert when their transport packed up and they were stranded for 4 days or so..... Was good to hear Wimbledon mentioned

Seems the idea is coming to London and the burbs https://www.standard.co.uk/go/london/attractions/drive-in-cinema-uk-a4437951.html?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR1RAts6zagR460p1B3yrjOlBrmsXZ-wCclSJjSWpZ4gDZobUxFOMRB6Xag#Echobox=1589271945

Here is an England v Australia test with Roland, Julian Wigg and Chris Baybutt. The only names I recognise. Was a surprise that he didn’t last long at Wimbledon, because I think almost all decent grass trackers made a good career out of speedway. Guess a wonder Julian never gave it much of a go

Tbh I have been searching for it for ages, on and off. Heard about it, but only just came across it today

The famous Johhny Carson interview with Putt Mossmann

Charlie had I think the longest career of those early Australian pioneers Not sure when he started though I think it must have been 1924( a G.Spinks was riding in the same meeting as US stars Ralph Hepburn and Johnny Seymour). By early 1925 he as being named as one of the riders appearing in a meeting, so I guess he had made a bit of a name for himself by then He went on to appear for Australia as late as the 1950s !! He was also one of the Australians who stayed on in the UK during the war and joined the RAF

In what order would you place these Aussie greats???

Always felt one weakness with Crump was his failure to defend a championship. One year in winning he was truly superb and the next, even though he might have finished 2nd he seemed to go off the boil -
I don’t know if it is possible in the UK, but I have already mentioned elsewhere the plan that one club in Danish football have if putting up big screens in their car park and having spectators turn up in their cars. An idea that has also taken off in Germany with drive in cinema and even discos. You pay online so it is all contactless and you have to alert an attendant if you need to go to the loo. The problem of medical attendance will still remain for speedway though

Couldn't track down Ann. But managed to find one of the riders, Franz Boßlet, who also gave a talk and has a driving school in the area, where one of the bikes used to be on display. Asked him about the speedway and hope to get an answer soon
-
Tbh I had him worth more on his average than the reality. Wonder how his home average / away average worked out. But a good back up, the type every team needs
-
Five riders that you felt were underrated.

Colin and Bobby McNeil I would say
