2008 Fim Congress, Durban (south Africa)
iris123 replied to DutchGrasstrack's topic in International World of Speedway
As ever good work Jesper,to put all that together. Nice that the Euro U19 Team Final, plus the Euro 80cc Championships are in Denmark. Also the World U21 Final at Gorzow is reachable for me Not too sure on the 250cc comp.Who will enter?I guess riders from CZ and Germany, maybe even GB.But i would have thought that depends on where it is held. -
September GP could be Gorican also Or wouldn't it make sense to have two GPs in neighbouring countries one after the other?Have heard on the grapevine though, that Gorican want to host a GP.I thought it would be instead of Krsko though
-
Yes,at WFC. Slaphead should know if Viv is still alive.Although i haven't seen him post for a while.Maybe Blazeaway can ask.or i will ask my Mum He is/was my mums uncle
-
Only for the big meeting though Think old Ted Hubbard lost a Second Division Riders Championship because of the rain.Seem to remember Cyril Maidment always out their taking the bags of sawdust out of the tractor and putting them on the bends
-
Was meant to be a joke.Just seen you post that a few times lately And seeing as Viv was part of our family i expect Blazeaway and Slaphead to remember Viv Only saw them play once though. For Ronnie's testimonial
-
Funny what you learn on the internet though.I was going to speedway all those years and honestly didn't know there was such things as slick and deep tracks.I just thought they were dry or wet/sawdust tracks
-
That's the guy What's the betting chunky will be on later and say "I was going to mention him"
-
T-Mills Tours in Balham(wasn't it?) And those ads in the Star for cassete tapes of speedway meetings!!!!!Who bought one of those????
-
Thanks for that Peter. So i was lucky enough to see PC's best years
-
Indeed Bryn.I always thought of Hackney as a "Mail" track and Plough lane as a "Star" track.Really because of Arthur at hackney and Eddie Toogood at Wimbledon
-
Surely that brings up one of the major topics of the 70s.The ban on Swedish riders in 74.Only a couple escaped like Olle Nygren and Soren Sjosten i think.Who were resident in England.
-
Oh i agree.Absolutely fantastic on his day.And that seemed to be most days.Although he was superb at Hyde Road,he still seemed to be just as good and very exciting at the much different Plough Lane.He was just so exciting to watch. At least in the period i saw him regularly 73-77.I sort of drifted away for a while what with exams and taking a degree. When i got back into speedway again he was still going well(84).I remember going to Hyde Road and seeing him Mort and a young Andy Smith demolish the oppo. But what happened to him in that 78-84 period?.I would have expected him to maybe add a title or so to his collection. At least be on the rostrum a few times.

Not sure what you are on about .I was not only talking about being consulted about the state of the Gelsenkirchen track.I was talking about all the goings on,but particularly the decision to move the GP to Poland a week later. The riders were pretty p'd off that they were not in on any of the talks.Just told "It's off and will be run next week at Bydgoszcz".You don't nee a "source of information" to gather that much.A number of riders have said so publicly.
-
I didn't know that. Why did no-one tell me? Then again,i was in bed by that time
-
The Start Marshall at Plough Lane in his smart red with yellow trimming(?)suit and even the rakers had Dons pullies.Think they also done the Wembley meetings as well. And all those riders like McKinlay who wore scruffy old bobble hats Edit:And after seeing the news today......in the 70s at least 90% of the top riders rode in Britain. One or two didn't.But now it seems to be almost like 1 or 2 do and the rest don't want to know
-
Seems you lot have forgotten the thing that sticks in my mind about the 70s.Mike Patricks trews

Can Nicki Get 6?
iris123 replied to home straight's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
One reason could be that there are maybe fewer riders today.Anders Michanek mentioned in his backtrack interview that there are now about 30% less Swedish riders than in his day.Riders are riding in 2/3/4 or more leagues and i guess taking up team spots that would have gone to a local rider 30 years ago -
In 1973 those teams were fairly evenly matched.Fact is today even with 6 man teams Poland has far far more strength in depth. You might be getting carried away with the super talented Emil.Don't blame you.But who is there other than him?I saw Russia a few months back in Vojens and they are no match for Poland.Laguta is good and should progress. But other than seeing Sajfutdinov go up against the Polish top boys i can't see where the interest would be if that meeting was for instance held in Denmark

I wouldn't be so sure. Was it Middlo that was spotted the other week by the side of a German Autobahn near Gelsenkirchen trying to thumb a lift back to Dorset?
-
That is how he spells it.Shazzy and a few others have an alternative spelling
-
How much is he paying you?

Your memories are fonder than mine mate,as you had those special spikes on your shoes!.You was walking around all confident, while i knew at any minute i might have 4 or 5,000 people laughing at me
